The influence of impurity on the critical thickness of the CeO2 buffer layer for coated conductors

The lattice parameters, band structure, density of state and elastic constant of RE-doped CeO2 (RE=Sm, Gd, Dy), the buffer material for coated HTS conductors, are calculated using the plane-wave method with pseudopotentials based on the density functional theory (DFT) of first-principle. The rule and mechanism of the effect of rare earth impurity on the critical thickness of the CeO2 buffer layer are investigated. It is found that, in the range of the calculation, the changes of the lattice volume V and elastic constant E* of CeO2 with the impurity are mainly determined by the increased electrons δn e of the system. The relationship of the elastic constant E* and increased electrons δn e is established. It is indicated that the critical thickness of the CeO2 single buffer layer doped with Sm, Gd, and Dy may be enhanced by 22%, 43% and 33%, respectively.

The effect of antisite defects on the mechanical and dynamic stability of Nb₃Al

The A15-type conventional superconductor Nb3Al alloys has been considered as an ideal candidate for next generation high field magnets due to its higher superconducting properties and less sensitivity to stain than that of industrialized Nb3Sn superconductor. First-principles methods are employed to study the potential point defects, vacancy and antisite defects in deviating stoichiometric Nb3Al alloys and their effect on structure and mechanical properties. Our results show that antisite defects are easier to be produced than vacancy defects, and NbAlantisite defects can keep the tetragonal structure of Nb3Al. Furthermore, the influence of antisite defects on dynamic stability of Nb3Al is investigated together with NbAldefects. With the increase of Nb antisite defect content and the formation of orderly arrangement, we found the phonon spectrum yields no more soft phonon modes, which is in contradiction with the dynamical instability of stoichiometric Nb3Al with no defects. Our calculations indicate Nb antisite defects play a crucial role on the dynamic stability of Nb3Al compounds.

β -decay spectroscopy of the proton drip-line nucleus Al22

A detailed $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay spectroscopic study of $^{22}\mathrm{Al}$ was performed at the Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou. With the $\ensuremath{\beta}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$-particle coincidence measurement by a high-resolution DSSD particle detection array and a high efficiency $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray detection array, total eight excited states in $^{22}\mathrm{Mg}$ fed by Gamow-Teller transitions was newly identified. The one-proton, two-proton, and $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decays of the IAS at 14046(5) keV in $^{22}\mathrm{Mg}$, which were partly observed in different experiments before, were identified simultaneously in the present work, providing accurate spectroscopic information about its decay. A more complete $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay scheme of $^{22}\mathrm{Al}$ was constructed and compared to the shell-model calculations with the USD-type Hamiltonians, USDC and USDB.

RE (RE = Sm, Eu, Gd)‐doped CeO₂ single buffer layers for coated conductors prepared by chemical solution deposition

Abstract Textured RE (RE = Sm, Eu, Gd)‐doped CeO 2 single buffer layers for coated conductors were prepared by a polymer assisted chemical solution deposition (PACSD) approach. The as‐grown buffer layers on biaxially textured NiW(5%) alloy tapes were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thicknesses of these buffer layers have been determined to be over 150 nm, on which a YBCO film has been deposited with an onset transition temperature above 90 K and a critical current density of 1 MA cm –2 . These results indicate that RE doping can increase the critical thickness of CeO 2 and PACSD may be a cost‐effective way to deposit CeO 2 . (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Fe-doped epitaxial YBCO films prepared by chemical solution deposition

YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO)-coated conductors have wide-ranging potential in large-scale applications such as superconducting maglev trains and superconducting electric cables, but low current carrying capability restrains the practical application of YBCO-coated conductors at high temperatures and high magnetic fields. It is crucial to develop YBCO-coated conductors with high critical current density. In this paper, epitaxial, dense, smooth, and crack-free Fe-doped YBCO films were prepared on a LaAlO3 single crystal substrate via a fluorine-free polymer-assisted metal organic deposition method. The effects of the dilute Fe doping on microstructure and superconducting character of YBCO films were investigated. The critical temperature for superconducting of the Fe-doped YBCO films decreases slightly. However, the in-field critical current density of YBCO films improves with dilute Fe doping of amounts less than x = 0.005, compared to the pure YBCO film. Therefore, the current carrying capability of YBCO film can improve by doping with appropriate amounts of Fe. This means that dilute Fe doping in YBCO films may be a feasible way to prepare high-performance coated conductors.

$\beta$ decay of $^{26}$P was used to populate the astrophysically important $E_x=$5929.4(8) keV $J^{\pi}=3{^+}$ state of $^{26}$Si. Both $\beta$-delayed proton at 418(8) keV and gamma ray at 1742(2) keV emitted from this state were measured simultaneously for the first time with corresponding absolute intensities of 11.1(12)\% and 0.59(44)\%, respectively. Besides, shell model calculations with weakly bound effects were performed to investigate the decay properties of other resonant states and a spin-parity of $4^+$ rather than $0^+$ was favored for the $E_x=$5945.9(40) keV state. Combining the experimental results and theoretical calculations, $^{25}$Al($p,\gamma$)$^{26}$Si reaction rate in explosive hydrogen burning environments was calculated and compared with previous studies.
