Correction of Non‐Uniform Rotational Distortion in the Proximally Controlled Endoscopic OCTA

ABSTRACT Endoscopic Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) can provide high‐resolution cross‐sectional images for internal organ tissues. Combining the endoscopic imaging with Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA), information of blood vessels in superficial lumen tissues is expected to be acquired. However, in endoscopic OCT systems using proximal scanning probes, performance of OCTA encounters significant challenges due to non‐uniform rotational distortion (NURD) caused by the non‐constant rotation of the distal imaging unit. In this study, we proposed a registration method for endoscopic OCTA imaging in a proximally controlled OCT System. Global registration and A‐line registration were employed to correct the distortion caused by mechanical friction between the catheter sheath and torque coil. Experimental performances in both microfluidic channel and rat rectum show significant correction of NURD. Our study achieved the first implementation of endoscopic OCTA under a spiral B‐scan rotation scheme in a proximally controlled OCT system, facilitating clear visualization of blood flow.

Correction of non-uniform rotational distortion in proximally controlled endoscopic OCT using microfluidic phantom

In endoscopic OCT systems, the imbalance in torque load during rotational scanning will lead to non-uniform rotation of the distal probe, inevitably resulting in Non-Uniform Rotational Distortion (NURD) in the images. NURD can cause image translation and stretching or compression issues at arbitrary positions in OCT images, leading to misalignment of image information and impeding the implementation of endoscopic OCTA. In high-speed distal scanning OCT system, the instantaneous rotational speed of the micro-motor's metal struts was measured for OCT data resampling, enabling NURD correction, and OCTA was successfully realized. In proximal scanning, NURD is a more serious problem due to torque transmission over longer distances, resulting in asymmetric friction at different positions. In recent years, local block matching (LBM) and improved Features from Accelerated Segment Test (FAST) algorithms were used to solve NURD in B-scan images in proximal controlling OCT system. Cross-sectional OCTA was successfully implemented. In this paper, Global registration and A-line registration were used to correct NURD in continuous rotation and retraction of proximally controlled OCT imaging. Global registration was used to correct extensive NURD in B-scan images and A-line registration was applied for fine correction of minor NURD. Results from microfluidic data collected under the same position and retraction conditions demonstrate the effectiveness of NURD correction, and en face OCTA imaging was realized for the first time in a proximally controlled endoscopic OCT.

Diagnosis of dental caries based on attenuation coefficients analysis of optical coherence tomography images

Abstract Quantitative analysis of optical attenuation based on optical coherence tomography images will offer an effective method to enhance diagnostic capabilities. In this paper, the optical attenuation in demineralized caries specimens was calculated to distinguish between normal teeth and carious teeth and further to differentiate the severity of caries, and thus come to the half‐automated diagnosis of dental caries. Results show that the attenuation coefficient in carious regions is approximately , while that of normal teeth is about . Attenuation coefficient of carious regions is 35% higher than that of normal teeth. Moreover, five classes of caries were qualified and classified based on the optical attenuation coefficient. Compared with the healthy teeth, there is a noticeable disparity in the attenuation coefficients of carious teeth, both on the surface and at the dentinoenamel junction. This study provides a method for accurate caries diagnosis, particularly in detection of early lesions and subtle structural changes.

Study on fracture toughness with different thicknesses CT specimen

The material selected for this study was a WELDOX 900 steel plate. This paper analyzed the size effect of fracture toughness based on experimental results and finite element numerical simulation results. In addition, J-integrals of different thicknesses were investigated and the relational expression between them was acquired in this study. The main conclusions are as follows: Firstly, the formula between the ductile fracture toughness J0.2 and the specimen thickness was obtained. It proposed a method for predicting the fracture toughness of plane strain state using thin specimens of several thicknesses based on this formula. Secondly, the fracture toughness values of the materials were obtained by finite element numerical simulation. And it was found that the distribution of stress triaxiality near the crack tip could well explain the variation of fracture toughness with thickness.
