James S. Oakdale, Juergen Biener, and co-workers report 3D-printing of low density foams with submicrometer features in article number 1702425. The foam is successfully applied in plasma drive shaping: A plasma shock wave travels through the foam before impinging upon and ramp compressing an aluminum sample to pressures of over 50 GPa. The 3D printed foam helps to smoothen and shape the plasma piston drive, thereby ensuring uniform compression.

Off-Hugoniot characterization of alternative inertial confinement fusion ablator materials.

The ablation material used during the National Ignition Campaign, a glow- discharge polymer (GDP), does not couple as efficiently as simulations indicated to the multiple- shock inducing radiation drive environment created by laser power profile [1]. We investigate the performance of two other ablators, boron carbide (B4C) and high-density carbon (HDC) and compare with GDP under the same hohlraum conditions. Ablation performance is determined through measurement of the shock speed produced in planar samples of the ablator subjected to the identical multiple-shock inducing radiation drive environments that are similar to a generic three-shock ignition drive. Simulations are in better agreement with the off-Hugoniot performance of B4C than either HDC or GDP.

How high energy fluxes may affect Rayleigh–Taylor instability growth in young supernova remnants

Abstract Energy-transport effects can alter the structure that develops as a supernova evolves into a supernova remnant. The Rayleigh–Taylor instability is thought to produce structure at the interface between the stellar ejecta and the circumstellar matter, based on simple models and hydrodynamic simulations. Here we report experimental results from the National Ignition Facility to explore how large energy fluxes, which are present in supernovae, affect this structure. We observed a reduction in Rayleigh–Taylor growth. In analyzing the comparison with supernova SN1993J, a Type II supernova, we found that the energy fluxes produced by heat conduction appear to be larger than the radiative energy fluxes, and large enough to have dramatic consequences. No reported astrophysical simulations have included radiation and heat conduction self-consistently in modeling supernova remnants and these dynamics should be noted in the understanding of young supernova remnants.

Abstract Monolithic porous bulk materials have many promising applications ranging from energy storage and catalysis to high energy density physics. High resolution additive manufacturing techniques, such as direct laser writing via two photon polymerization (DLW‐TPP), now enable the fabrication of highly porous microlattices with deterministic morphology control. In this work, DLW‐TPP is used to print millimeter‐sized foam reservoirs (down to 0.06 g cm −3 ) with tailored density‐gradient profiles, where density is varied by over an order of magnitude (for instance from 0.6 to 0.06 g cm −3 ) along a length of <100 µm. Taking full advantage of this technology, however, is a multiscale materials design problem that requires detailed understanding of how the different length scales, from the molecular level to the macroscopic dimensions, affect each other. The design of these 3D‐printed foams is based on the brickwork arrangement of 100 × 100 × 16 µm 3 log‐pile blocks constructed from sub‐micrometer scale features. A block‐to‐block interdigitated stitching strategy is introduced for obtaining high density uniformity at all length scales. Finally, these materials are used to shape plasma‐piston drives during ramp‐compression of targets under high energy density conditions created at the OMEGA Laser Facility.

Tailored ramp-loading via shock release of stepped-density reservoirs

The concept of a gradient piston drive has been extended from that of a single component reservoir, such as a high explosive, to that of a multi-component reservoir that utilizes low density foams and large shocks to achieve high pressures (∼3.5 mbar) and controlled pressure vs. time profiles on a driven sample. Simulated and experimental drives shaped through the use of multiple component (including carbonized resorcinol formaldehyde and SiO2 foam) reservoirs are compared. Individual density layers in a multiple component reservoir are shown to correlate with velocity features in the measured drive which enables the ability to tune a pressure drive by adjusting the components of the reservoir. Pre-shot simulations are shown to be in rough agreement with the data, but post-shot simulations involving the use of simulated plasma drives were needed to achieve an exact match. Results from a multiple component reservoir shot (∼3.5 mbar) at the National Ignition Facility are shown.
