An <i>IGHG1</i> Variant Introgressed From Vindija Neanderthal Archaic Hominin Confers Enhanced Antibody Immunity Against SARS-CoV-2

How genetic polymorphisms of adaptive immune receptors influence population susceptibility to infectious diseases remains unclear. Here we describe the prevalence and provenance of a coding variant in IgG1 (G396R) that influences the IgG1 antibody response against SARS-CoV-2. G396R variant is negatively associated with susceptibility to COVID-19. The protective effect of the G396R variant is achieved by promoting the activation of memory B cells. G396R variant is highly polarized prevalence of the in Asian populations. LD analyses distinguished a 190kb LD block with the G396R variant closest to the peak, suggesting that the variant potentially have driven the selection. We investigated its origin and found the presence of the G396R variant in the Vindija Neanderthal. PCA analysis demonstrated the significant signals of Vindija Neanderthal introgression at the LD blocked G396R variant region. Conclusively, these results indicate that an introgressed Vindija Neanderthal IGHG1 variant confers enhanced antibody immunity against SARS-CoV-2.Funding Information: This study has been supported by Tsinghua University Spring Breeze Fund, Center for Life Sciences, and Institute for Immunology at Tsinghua University. Direct observation of coexisting Kondo hybridization and antiferromagnetic state in UAs2

In $f$-electron heavy fermion systems, a wide variety of fascinating magnetic and electronic properties arise, and they are often thought to be related to a crossover behavior between localized and itinerant regimes for $f$ electrons. Uranium-based compounds with partially occupied $5f$ orbitals provide an ideal platform to elucidate the outstanding issue of the competition between magnetic order and Kondo entanglement. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, complemented by density functional theory simulations, we probe the temperature-dependent evolution of the low-energy electronic structure of ${\mathrm{UAs}}_{2}$ and observe two nearly flat bands of different origin in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state. A nearly flat band which behaves with quasi-two-dimensional character has been observed and contributed to the heavy spectral weight at the \cyrchar\CYRG{} point around ${E}_{\mathrm{F}}$. This flat band reveals typical Kondo hybridization. Another flat band around the $M$ point is closely related to paramagnetic (PM)-AFM phase transition, which opens an energy gap below the transition temperature \ensuremath{\sim}273 K. Our results provide direct spectral demonstration of the electronic structure evolution across the $f\text{\ensuremath{-}}c$ hybridization and PM-AFM transition in ${\mathrm{UAs}}_{2}$.

Recent studies on the electronic structures of the $5f$-electron based antiferromagnetic compounds, i.e., uranium dipnictides, have aroused widespread interest in the complex interplay among different channels of interactions, such as Kondo entanglement and antiferromagnetic ordering. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to explore the complex low-energy excitations in the $5f$-electron based antiferromagnet $\mathrm{U}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$. The crystal-field excitations are revealed as peaks above the Fermi level in the $\mathrm{d}I/\mathrm{d}V$ spectra. Temperature-dependent spectroscopic measurements find that Kondo resonance and antiferromagnetic order are manifested as two peaks below the Fermi level, demonstrating that Kondo coherence can be undisturbedly established in the antiferromagnetic phase. The crystal-field excitations, Kondo resonance, and antiferromagnetic state are all locally altered by the presence of As-atom vacancies at the atomic scale and these phenomena prove that the nonmagnetic atom vacancy has a strong influence on low-energy excitations in heavy fermion compounds.

Quantitatively determining the degree of spin fluctuations in actinide metals and compounds

Abstract Actinide materials are well-documented for nuclear properties, but their 5f electrons that produce exotic phenomena are not, due to the complexity of a dual localized and itinerant nature that remains a mystery. Particular interest is given to the electronic correlations at the localized and itinerant boundary where strong spin fluctuations are present. We report the identification of an intensity defined by integrating the normalized resistivity that approximately provides a quantitative measure of spin fluctuations. The intensity is very sensitive to the tuning of non-thermal parameters such as pressure and chemical doping, probing the anomalies in the evolution of spin fluctuations close to a valence or magnetic instability. In this way, our results are not only connected with the long-standing controversy on the anomalous low-temperature resistivity behavior of actinide metals, but also highlight an unconventional type of superconducting pairing, mediated by valence and/or spin fluctuations, for a wealth of 4f and 5f-electron systems. In an unified picture proposed, it is helpful to determine the degree of spin fluctuations for understanding the origin of the emergent superconductivity in systems with correlated electrons.
