Characteristics of plasma flow from a pulse vacuum arc

Parameters of a plasma flow produced with a pulsed vacuum arc are studied by a set of diagnostic techniques. As materials of the cathode, the metals with distinguished electrophysical feathers (Al, Mg, Ti, Zr) are used. The arc current is of a quasi-rectangular shape of 200 mus length and about of 100 A amplitude. Distributions of ions of the cathode plasma flow over energy per a discharge unit E/Z was measured by a movable small-size electrostatic analyzer. It was shown that the most likely energies E _m /Z of distributions at 30 mus after the arc onset (Stage I) are markedly higher than these at the quasi-steady-state stage, i.e. at 100 mus after the onset (Stage II). Namely, E _m /Z at Stage I are close for different metals and equal about of 70 eV. These ones at Stage II are rather less and are of about 45 eV. The widths and peak values of the distributions at Stage I far exceed these at Stage II, as well. A significant dependence of the energy distributions shape on angle between axis of the entrance tube of the analyzer and axis of the plasma flow is also found.

Elongated long-lived jet of dense plasma produced by a hollow laser beam

Numerical simulation of the dynamics of plasma jets planned for use for the initiation of vacuum pinch discharges has been carried out. Jets of the “laser-metal-plasma-liner” type are created by laser beams with different spatial intensity distributions, which irradiate targets of various configurations. The three variants of plasma-jets formation are considered: irradiation of a target by (i) a Gaussian beam from a neodymium laser, (ii) the same Gaussian beam incident on a hole in the target, and (iii) a beam with the intensity distribution of the Laguerre–Gaussian mode. The dynamics of spatial distributions of the electron density, jet plasma temperatures, and the target mass ablated by laser radiation is calculated. It is shown that for quite moderate laser beam energies and intensities ∼400 mJ and ∼109 W/cm2, respectively, in the second and third cases, jets are produced with the lifetime of a few tens of nanoseconds and the maximum density ∼1019 and 1021 cm−3, respectively. The use of such jets can increase the pinching efficiency and improve plasma parameters in laser-induced discharges.

The acceleration of a cathode-jet plasma in a pulse vacuum discharge

Ion acceleration up to energy keV in a low-inductive vacuum discharge was investigated experimentally in detail. It was shown that the acceleration started at a distance about - 3 mm from the cathode and continued all the way to the anode. Negative potential `bursts' moving together with the plasma jet front were discovered. They apparently trapped ions and accelerated them to the observed high energies. A mechanism for the generation of the `bursts' and the plasma acceleration due to the jet constriction is proposed.

Ion acceleration in the radially expanding plasma of the hot refractory anode vacuum arc

The ion energy and plasma potential as a function of radial distance were measured in a vacuum arc mode—the hot refractory anode vacuum arc. A 175 A arc was sustained between a 30-mm-diam water-cooled Cu cathode and a thermally isolated graphite anode. The plasma potential and electron temperature were determined using a triple probe, and the ion energy distribution was measured with a retarding field analyzer. It was found that the electron temperature decreased from 1.2 to 0.6 eV with increasing radial distance from 3 to 18 cm. In the same distance range, the directed ion energy per unit charge increased from 8 to 20 eV. The 12 eV ion energy enhancement significantly exceeded the measured drop of the plasma potential of about 2 V, indicating that the ions were not accelerated electrostatically.

Radially expanding plasma parameters in a hot refractory anode vacuum arc

Electron temperature, plasma density, and plasma potential were measured with a Langmuir probe in the radially expanding plasma streaming from the interelectrode gap of a hot refractory anode vacuum arc. Plasma parameters were measured when the anodic plume was formed, during the first 20 s after arc ignition, at points located 3 to 18 cm from the electrode edge. In addition, the ion energy distribution was determined using a retarding field analyzer. As a function of radial distance, the electron temperature decreased from 1.2 to 0.6 eV, the plasma potential decreased from 3.7 to 1.7 V, and the plasma density decreased from 2.1013 to 1.8.1011 cm−3. The measured mean ion energy per unit charge state increased from 8 eV at an axial distance of 3 cm to 20 eV at 18 cm. The electron temperature and plasma potential decreased with arc duration by about 0.4 and 2 eV, respectively, near the electrode region. The relatively small magnitude of the ion energy observed near the gap may be caused by nonelastic resonance charge exchange scattering of the cathode jet ions on atoms that are reevaporated from the anode. The observed ion acceleration at larger distances from the gap is caused by the gradient in the electron pressure caused by the plasma expansion from the interelectrode gap into the ambient vacuum.
