This paper reports an automatic instrument developed for characterization of optical waveguides. A specially designed waveguide excitation unit offers a flexible platform for measurement of optical waveguide characteristics like number of propagating modes, mode field intensity distribution, the refractive index profiles, waveguide geometry, attenuation, and dispersion. Further, the availability of attachments like filters, polarizers, chopper, intensity profiler, and CCD camera make the instrument flexible enough for a variety of other experiments also. The instrument is PC controlled and assisted by user friendly menu-driven software. A large number of waveguides have been analyzed using the setup. These results are also presented in the paper.

Defect Recovery Study of e-Irradiated Silicon during Rapid Thermal Annealing

Rapid thermal processing (RTP) is of promise as a tool that will reduce the thermal budget presently used in the manufacture of the semiconductor devices. Moreover, due to fast ramp up/ramp down rates and shorter processing times, RTP provides a new tool for investigating defect annealing mechanisms in solids. In the present paper, rapid thermal annealing (RTA) of electron-irradiated silicon probed by a positron lifetime spectrometer (PLTS) is reported. The mechanism of defect recovery under isochronal annealing is discussed in the light of positron trapping rate, defect concentration, IR spectroscopic, and carrier concentration data. RTP (schnelles thermisches Bearbeiten) ist ein vielversprechendes Mittel, um den Energiebedarf bei der Herstellung von Halbleiterbauelementen zu senken. Weiterhin bietet RTP aufgrund der schnellen Heiz- und Kühlraten und der kurzen Behandlungszeiten ein neues Verfahren zur Untersuchung von Defektausheilprozessen in Festkörpern. Hier wird das schnelle thermische Ausheilen von elektronenbestrahltem Silizium mittels eines Positronenlebensdauerspektrometers untersucht. Der Mechanismus der Defekterholung bei isochronem Ausheilen wird im Licht von Daten über Positroneneinfangrate, Defektkonzentration, IR-Spektroskopie und Ladungsträgerkonzentration diskutiert.

Surface Topology of Zinc Oxide Powder Prepared by High Temperature Sol Gel Combustion Method

ZnO is most widely and most attractive element in today’s research. ZnO powder is not available naturally. The ZnO powder was prepared by different methods. Here in this paper the preparation of powder was discussed. The powder was prepared by high temperature sol gel combustion method. Here in this study selected temperature was 500 0C ± 10 0C. to form the pure ZnO powder the synthesized powder was sintered at 6500C ± 10 0C. After sintering the white ZnO powder was formed with amorous in nature.This method was easy and high yield. The powder was characterized by using XRD and SEM. From XRD grain size was calculated. Using SEM the particle size, specific surface area, surface roughness and the surface morphology was studied.

Review paper for developments in Array Waveguide Gratings

The proposed work reviews the evolution of Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWG) from concentric phased arrays to present day design. The article covers different designs and materials, implemented for different applications. The AWGs implementation is done in semiconductor as they are integrated with other electro-optical components such as LEDs, lasers, and photodetectors.Based on the review, parameters are extracted for development of a novel AWG which can be implemented in Spectrum analyser.
