Effect of bonding agents on styrene butadiene rubber–aluminum powder composites

Abstract Effects of various bonding agents—such as the hexamethylene tetramine–resorcinol system (HR), bis[3‐ (triethoxysilyl) propyl] tetra sulfide (Si‐69), and cobalt naphthenate (CoN)—on the mechanical properties of aluminum powder filled styrene butadiene rubber composites were studied, giving emphasis on concentration of bonding agent and loading of aluminum powder. Shore A hardness, modulus, tensile strength, tear strength, heat buildup, etc., were increased by the loading of aluminum powder, and the presence of bonding agents again increased these properties. Rebound resilience and elongation at break were decreased by the addition of aluminum powder. Equilibrium swelling studies showed an improved adhesion between aluminum powder and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) in presence of bonding agents. Among the various bonding agents used in this study, silane coupling agent (Si‐69) and hexamethylene tetramine–resorcinol (HR) system were found to be better for aluminum powder filled SBR vulcanizates. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compatibilization of SBR/NBR Blends Using Chemically Modified Styrene Butadiene Rubber

Abstract The effect of dichlorocarbene modified styrene butadiene rubber (DCSBR) as a compatibilizer in blends of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR/NBR) has been studied. The cure characteristics, physical properties, crosslink density, FTIR studies and low temperature transitions of the blends were determined as a function of chlorine content of DCSBR. Compatibilizing efficiency depended on the chlorine content of DCSBR and composition of blend constituents. Effective compatibilization was achieved when chlorine content of compatibilizer was 25% and SBR content of blend was either 50% or lower. FTIR studies, glass transition behavior measured by DSC and DMA showed that an appreciable extent of molecular level miscibility has been achieved in SBR/NBR blends by using DCSBR as a compatibilizer. Improvement in mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, resilience, hardness and compression set were achieved both when DCSBR was added and chlorine content of DCSBR increased up to 25%. The resistance of the vulcanizate towards air and oil aging improved with compatibilization. The change in technological properties correlated with crosslink density of the blends assessed from swelling studies and stress-strain data.

Effect of Aluminum Powder on Filled Natural Rubber Composites

Abstract The effect of aluminum powder on the properties of natural rubber composites containing high abrasion furnace black (HAF), general purpose furnace black (GPF), acetylene black, china clay and precipitated silica was studied. In all cases the total filler content including aluminum powder is fixed at 40 parts per hundred rubber (phr). Gradual replacement of these fillers by aluminum powder showed a marked increase in thermal conductivity. This increased thermal conductivity of aluminum powder filled composites decreased the vulcanization time and led to uniform curing throughout the material, especially for thick articles. Mechanical properties like tensile strength, tear strength, rebound resilience, heat build-up, hardness, compression set, etc., are comparatively better for these composites. Aluminum powder incorporated vulcanizates also showed good resistance against thermal aging and oxidative degradation. Thus, use of aluminum powder in rubber compounds can lead to energy saving in the vulcanization of thick rubber articles and enhance the service life of such rubber products.

Studies on epoxidized rubber seed oil as plasticizer for acrylonitrile butadiene rubber

Abstract The application of rubber seed oil (RSO) and epoxidized RSO (ERSO) as a plasticizer in acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) was studied using RSO and ERSO with different levels of epoxidation. The results indicated that ERSO could be used as a less leachable and low volatility plasticizer for NBR. The use of ERSO in NBR gave better abrasion resistance whereas the tensile strength and tear strength were comparable to those vulcanizates that contained dioctyl phthalate as a plasticizer. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tear and Wear Resistance of Silica Filled Thermoplastic Polypropylene—Natural Rubber Blend

Abstract The tear and wear resistance of silica filled thermoplastic polypropylene-natural rubber blend were found to increase with extent of dynamic crosslinking of the elastomer phase. Addition of silane coupling agent causes improvement in the failure properties of blends containing sulfur and sulfur-dicumyl peroxide [DCP] mixed vulcanizing systems and not in DCP containing blend. Scanning electron photomicrographs of the failure surfaces of the blends throw light on the mode of their failure.

Stress relaxation in short sisal‐fiber‐reinforced natural rubber composites

Abstract Stress relaxation behavior of chemically treated short sisal fiber‐reinforced natural rubber composite was studied. The effect of bonding agent, strain level, fiber loading, fiber orientation, and temperature has been studied in detail. The existence of a single relaxation pattern in the unfilled stock and a two‐stage relaxation mechanism for the fiber‐filled composite is reported. The relaxation process is influenced by the bonding agent, which indicated that the process involved fiber‐rubber interface. The rate of stress relaxation increased with fiber loading, whereas it decreased with aging. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
