Responses of bud banks and shoot density to experimental drought along an aridity gradient in temperate grasslands

Abstract Climate change is expected to increase the magnitude and frequency of extreme drought in most grassland ecosystems. Exploring the responses of below‐ground bud banks and their relationships with above‐ground plant structure and drought is need to explain how climate change will impact grassland ecosystems. However, studies on the response of community‐scale bud and shoot densities to experimental drought along an aridity gradient are rare. We experimentally removed 66% of growing season precipitation for 4 years in three temperate grasslands that spanned an aridity gradient in northern China. We quantified the legacy effects of drought on grass, forb and total community below‐ground bud density, above‐ground shoot density and the ratio of bud to shoot density 1 year following treatment. Below‐ground bud density was lowest at the highest aridity site for the entire community, while above‐ground shoot density was highest at the medium aridity site. Below‐ground bud and above‐ground shoot densities were the lowest at the high aridity site for grasses but the highest for forbs at this site. Bud:shoot ratios decreased with increasing aridity for grasses, yet remained constant for forbs along the aridity gradient. Below‐ground bud density in drought plots remained lower than controls a year following drought at each site. Experimental drought did not alter the below‐ground bud bank for grasses but decreased forb bud banks across sites. Experimental drought had little legacy effects on above‐ground shoot density and bud:shoot ratios for grasses, forbs and the total community at each site. Our results suggest that grass and forb bud banks can differ in their responses to both multi‐year drought along an aridity gradient, and that bud limitation for shoot generation may increase as grasslands get drier. Bud bank responses to climate will impact plant community functioning and resilience. Species diversity of degraded vegetation in different age restorations in Horqin Sandy Land, Northern China.

Following a series of field investigations into vegetation characteristics in Horqin Sandy Land,the community composition and species diversity were analyzed along a restoration gradient of dune vegetations [non-fenced mobile dune,11-year old dunes(mobile dune,semi-mobile dune,and semi-fixed dune),20-year old fenced dunes(mobile dune,semi-mobile dune,semi-fixed dune,and fixed dune)] and scattered tree grassland.Vegetation cover,species richness and diversity increased with an increase in degree of fixed and fenced years of mobile dunes.The succession series of plant communities were: Pioneer plants of Agriophyllum squarrosum and a few annual plants(mobile dune stage) → Artemisia halodendrom shrub and annual,biennial herbs(semi-mobile dune and semi-fixed dune stages) → annual,biennial and perennial herbs(fixed dune stage).As the amount of grass and perennial herbs increased in the process of dune vegetation restoration,the structure of plant communities became complex and herbage quality was considerably improved.

Functional diversity response to geographic and experimental precipitation gradients varies with plant community type

Abstract Precipitation is a primary determinant of plant community structure in drylands. However, the empirical evidence and predictions are lacking for how plant functional diversity in desert and steppe communities respond to altered precipitation regimes. We examined how precipitation changes along the natural and experimental gradients affect different components of functional diversity in desert‐shrub and steppe‐grass communities. We compared the associations of precipitation changes with community‐weighted means (CWMs) of six traits, functional divergence (FDvar) of each single‐trait and multi‐trait functional richness (FRic) and dispersion (FDis) for shrub and grass communities along the natural and experimental gradients. We also disentangle the roles of species turnover and intraspecific variations in affecting the responses of different functional diversity to precipitation changes. We found that in general, the similar responses of functional traits or diversity to both the natural and experimental precipitation gradients were dependent on plant community type. Across both two gradients, precipitation was positively associated with CWM of plant height and negatively associated with the CWM of SLA and leaf thickness in grass community, while positively associated with FDvar of four traits and FDis in shrub communities. Both species turnover and intraspecific variations contributed to the responses of grass community traits to precipitation changes across both two gradients, and to FDvar of traits and FDis in shrub community along the natural gradient. In contrast, species turnover variations contributed to FDvar of traits and FDis in shrub community in experiment. These results suggest that there is better concordance between the effects of naturally and experimentally increased precipitation on functional diversity of plant communities, but different mechanisms behind the relationship of functional diversity–precipitation between shrub and grass communities. Grass communities can adapt to precipitation changes by average trait differences, while shrub communities persist through FDvar of single‐trait and multi‐trait dispersion, thus highlighting the important differences in adaptive strategies between shrub and grass communities. Our findings demonstrate that short‐term responses of plant communities to manipulative precipitation changes can reflect long‐term shifts at spatial scales depending on the specific functional trait and diversity. Grassland sensitivity to drought is related to functional composition across East Asia and North America

Plant traits can be helpful for understanding grassland ecosystem responses to climate extremes, such as severe drought. However, intercontinental comparisons of how drought affects plant functional traits and ecosystem functioning are rare. The Extreme Drought in Grasslands experiment (EDGE) was established across the major grassland types in East Asia and North America (six sites on each continent) to measure variability in grassland ecosystem sensitivity to extreme, prolonged drought. At all sites, we quantified community-weighted mean functional composition and functional diversity of two leaf economic traits, specific leaf area and leaf nitrogen content, in response to drought. We found that experimental drought significantly increased community-weighted means of specific leaf area and leaf nitrogen content at all North American sites and at the wetter East Asian sites, but drought decreased community-weighted means of these traits at moderate to dry East Asian sites. Drought significantly decreased functional richness but increased functional evenness and dispersion at most East Asian and North American sites. Ecosystem drought sensitivity (percentage reduction in aboveground net primary productivity) positively correlated with community-weighted means of specific leaf area and leaf nitrogen content and negatively correlated with functional diversity (i.e., richness) on an intercontinental scale, but results differed within regions. These findings highlight both broad generalities but also unique responses to drought of community-weighted trait means as well as their functional diversity across grassland ecosystems.

Challenge to the desertification reversion in Horqin Sandy Land

Analyses of the changes in desertified land area, water resource availability, land use, and plant productivity in Horqin Sandy Land in recent 50 years showed that from 1950 to the late 1980s, the land desertification in Horqin Sandy Land had a rapid expansion, but reversed since then. The annual runoff of Xiliaohe River decreased consistently, and in 1999, the middle reach at Tongliao section was dried up. In recent 20 years, the water table of Xihu Lake was decreased by about 10 m, and dried up in 2001. The above-ground biomass of grasslands decreased from 520 g x m(-2) in 1937 to 197 g x m(-2) in 2005. The main cause of these results was the change of land use pattern, i. e., the overuse of water resources for re-vegetation or cropland irrigation. Water resources reduction was the major challenge to the desertification reversion in Horqin Sandy Land.
