Scaling of phonon frequencies and electron binding energies with interatomic distances in InxGa1−xN

In-K-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), x-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopy results are combined for a comprehensive study of InxGa1−xN layers with energy gaps extending over nearly the whole visible spectrum. The In–N and In–(In,Ga) distances determined by EXAFS are used for the derivation of the In–N bond ionicity as well as for the phonon frequency dependence of the LO and B12 modes, assessed by Raman, and the N 1s, In 3d5/2, Ga 3s, and Ga 2p1/2 electron binding energies on those distances. Phonon confinement due to perturbation of the periodic potential caused by the alloying is also quantified.

Gallium K-edge EXAFS measurements on cubic and hexagonal GaN

The microstructure of undoped cubic and hexagonal GaN films is studied using temperature dependent Ga K-edge EXAFS measurements (10K-290K).The microstructure around the Ga atom is distorted due to a splitting of the second nearest neighbor shell, which consists of Ga atoms.This splitting results in an additional Ga path at a distance longer than expected by 0.8+0.05A and is attributed to local lattice relaxation around nitrogen vacancies.From the temperature dependence of the DW factors for the 2 nd nearest neighbor shell of Ga, the Einstein temperature is equal to 318+_25K.

Micro and conventional XAFS study of incinerated Cr-rich tannery sludge

μ-XRF, XAFS and μ-XAFS spectroscopies were implemented in order to investigate the effect of thermal annealing on the stability of a vitrified tannery waste. The two dimensional μ-XRF scans disclose the presence of Cr-rich and depleted regions where both Cr(III) and Cr(VI) are present. However the polymerization of the Cr-O-Cr chains is different in these two distinct regions. More specifically, the μ-XANES and μ-EXAFS results reveal that in the Cr-rich inclusions, the Cr(in)O6 belong to Cr2O3, while in the Cr-depleted regions, different linkages among the Cr(III)O6 octahedra are detected. The percentage of the different type of polymeric structure around Cr(III) in the two distinct regions was assessed using Cr-K- EXAFS and XANES spectroscopies. It is revealed that upon thermal annealing the number of Cr(VI) ions is preserved and participate in the formation of the glass matrix. Even though Cr(III) is a glass modifier, the local coordination of the Cr(III)-octahedra changes upon thermal treatment. The presence of Cr(VI) suggests the limited capacity of the vitrification process to inhibit Cr(III) oxidation, however, Cr(VI) is safely trapped into both the glass and glass- ceramic matrix.

Application of Conventional and Microbeam Synchrotron Radiation X-Ray Fluorescence and Absorption for the Characterization of Human Nails

The synchrotron radiation based spectroscopies X-ray fluorescence and X-ray absorption fine structure are used to detect illness-related changes in the elemental distribution and bonding environment of metals in human nails. The effective atomic number of a collection of nails is determined using two methods, the X-ray transmittance and the scattering method, and is found equal to 7.5 +/- 0.5. X-ray fluorescence maps of the elemental distributions, recorded with a lateral resolution of 5 microm, reveal that S, Ca and Zn are distributed homogeneously while Fe tends to cluster. In the Fe-rich clusters, which have a diameter in the range 15-30 microm, the Fe concentration is 10 times higher than in the matrix. The Zn K edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure spectra reveal that Zn, in the nails from healthy donors and patients suffering from lung diseases, is four-fold coordinated with N and S and the Zn-N and Zn-S distances are equal to 2.03 A and 2.25 A, respectively. Finally the signature of various bonds in the C-, O- and N- K near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectra is discussed.

Influence of Surfactants on Fraction of Fe Atoms in the Octahedral Site and Magnetic Property Of Magnetite (Fe <sub>3</sub>O <sub>4</sub>) Nanoparticles Synthesized by One-Pot Co-Precipitation Method

Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by one-pot coprecipitation method using five different capping agents: Sodium citrate, Polyvinylpyrrolidone, Chitosan, CTAB and Citric acid. The influence of the various capping agents on the size , oxidation and fraction of Fe atoms occupying octahedral sites in relation to the saturation magnetization (Ms) of the Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPION) were studied. X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier-Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy, Zeta potential, and Vibrating Sample Magnetometery (VSM) are used to study the various effects. The results reveal that the Ms of the nanoparticles has a linear dependence on the fraction of Fe atoms occupying octahedral sites. However, there is a faint dependence of Ms on the particles size with the smallest nanoparticles exhibiting the lowest Ms value. And there is no direct relation between Ms and Fe oxidation state.
