High precision self-referenced phase retrieval of complex pulses with multiple-shearing spectral interferometry

We show that using multiple shears in spectral shearing interferometry is a powerful technique for improving precision, thus enabling the measurement of more complex pulses and resolving phase ambiguities. We derive an efficient and robust optimal phase reconstruction algorithm for extracting the spectral phase from interferograms taken at an arbitrary number of different shears. We show that if the shear is easily adjustable then a multishear measurement always offers a superior precision, even when considering the loss of precision of the raw data necessitated by multiple acquisitions. We present numerical examples and demonstrate an experimental implementation of the measurement of a double pulse using two shears.

Laboratory Evidence for Stochastic Plasma-Wave Growth

The first laboratory confirmation of stochastic growth theory is reported. Floating potential fluctuations are measured in a vacuum arc centrifuge using a Langmuir probe. Statistical analysis of the energy density reveals a lognormal distribution over roughly 2 orders of magnitude, with a high-field nonlinear cutoff whose spatial dependence is consistent with the predicted eigenmode profile. These results are consistent with stochastic growth and nonlinear saturation of a spatially extended eigenmode, the first evidence for stochastic growth of an extended structure.

Grating induced spectral enhancement via four-wave mixing

Recent experiments on supercontinuum generation in the presence of a grating showed that the supercontinuum intensity is enhanced on the long- wavelength side of the Bragg frequency. We give a simple physical explanation for this in terms of four-wave mixing.

Phase retrieval of complex ultrashort pulses using multiple-shearing spectral interferometry

A novel method for improving the precision of spectral shearing interferometry by using multiple shears is presented. Spectral shearing interferometry is a class of techniques which includes SPIDER, 2DSI and SPIRIT, in which the unknown pulse is interfered with a spectrally shifted replica. The pulse duration is limited by the inverse of the spectral shear and the spectrometer resolution. However, decreasing the spectral shear degrades the reconstructed phase signal-to-noise ratio because the reconstruction algorithm accumulates random phase noise at every sampling point. Here, this problem is solved by using multiple shears and combining the information in an optimal fashion. Intuitively, this algorithm resolves fine spectral features using a small shear measurement whilst using the finite differences from a large shear measurement to correct the accumulated error. This dramatically improves the precision of the retrieval in the presence of detector shot noise.

Correcting for Leakage Energy in the SiD Silicon-Tungsten ECal

A dominant contribution to ECal resolution at high energy (eg. 100 GeV) comes from leakage beyond the containment of the calorimeter. We have studied the leakage energy for the SiD silicon-tungsten ECal and developed a neural network algorithm for estimating the leakage energy and correcting the energy measurement. The SiD TDR design calls for 20 thin 2.5 mm tungsten layers followed by 10 thick 5.0 mm tungsten layers. We have investigated the impact on the leakage energy of a reduced number of layers, and the ability of an optimized neutral network analysis to correct for the leakage with a reduced number of layers, and reduced material thickness. Reducing layer numbers is motivated by cost containment.

3-octave high-energy supercontinuum from a 2 µm source

Many research fields have benefited tremendously from the ever lasting development of ultrashort pulses, es pecially nonlinear spectroscopy [1] which aims at investigating femtosecond scale dynamics of molecular motion. Of particular interest is the availability of coherent light and ultrashort pulses across large wavelength ranges, ide ally spanning several octaves from the UV to the mid-IR. The limited wavelength range and bandwidths of optical gain media requires, for ultrabroadband spectra, some form of continuum generation. Spectra broadened in highly nonlinear fibers, in particular photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), can span from the visible to mid-IR [2], although with a low spectral energy density (sub-pJ/nm). Using amplified visible pulses in bulk matter obviates this issue, how ever in order to achieve sufficient broadening, especially to to the longer wavelength side, often requires excessive pulse energy [3] or is not possible. Whilst this is partly a consequence of the reduced confinement of the unguided pulse, material dispersion is also crucial. Initiating spectral broadening in the normal dispersion regime is known to inhibit the onset of soliton dynamics and therefore also supercontinuum generation. This motivates initiating supercontinuum above the zero-dispersion wavelength of bulk materials by pumping in the anomalous dispersion regime.

Resolution of the relative phase ambiguity in spectral shearing interferometry of ultrashort pulses

We show that multiple-shear spectral shearing interferometry can overcome the relative phase ambiguity of disjoint spectral components that is present in single-shear approaches. By upconverting the unknown pulse with spatially chirped ancillae, we achieve a shear-to-space mapping that can be acquired on an imaging spectrometer. A subset of this continuous range of shears can be chosen for robust and accurate phase retrieval using a multiple-shear algorithm.
