Effect of Sisal Fibre Loading on Mechanical Properties of Jute Fibre Reinforced Epoxy Composite

The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of sisal fibre loading on mechanical properties of jute fibre reinforced epoxy composite. The hybrid sisal /jute fibres reinforced epoxy composites are prepared by hand lay-up technique at different loading of fibres. Scanning electron microscopy is used to study the interfacial studies of prepared composites. A positive effect of hybridization is observed in this study. The results show that mechanical properties (tensile test, flexural test and impact test) of hybrid composite increase with increase in fibre loading up to 30 wt.%

On-line Monitoring of Engineering Components Using Acoustic Emission Technique

Acoustic emission technique (AET) has been used for on-line monitoring of pressure vessels with artificial defects in the laboratory and for monitoring structural integrity of storage vessels in heavy water plant. The laboratory studies are helpful for getting better insight into the deformation and fracture aspects in the vessels, towards better utilisation of AET for structural integrity of components. AE results generated during hydrotesting of the storage vessels were used to confirm the structural integrity of the vessels. AE was used to monitor compression loading of plain and fly ash concrete. This showed three stages due to crack closure/microcracking, steady crack propagation and unstable crack propagation. An attempt was made to compare the types of cracking in concrete using AE parameters.

Nondestructive evaluation techniques for condition monitoring of components and plants

Condition monitoring of components and plants are of great importance for safe and reliable operation and for increasing productivity of plants. The challenges towards the condition monitoring can be sucessfully met by employing non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques. Vibration monitoring techniques are applied for periodic/continuous assessment of the condition of machinery parts and plants. Acoustic emission technique is used for leak detection and for structural integrity monitoring applications. Infrared thermography technique is employed for condition monitoring applications in steel, electrical and petrochemical industries. Lubricant analysis by ferrography, in-situ metallography, replica metallography and field signature mapping are also used for condition monitoring applications. In this paper, applications of these NDE techniques for condition monitoring of components and plants have been discussed. The successful implementation of these techniques could help to properly diagnose faults in plant components, enables taking timely decision about repair/replacement of components/plants, thus ensuring increased safety, reliability and productivity.
