Effects of ZrC content on the mechanical properties and microstructures of hot-rolled W–ZrC composites

In this paper, bulk W-0.2 wt% ZrC and W-0.8 wt% ZrC (hereafter abbreviated as WZC02, WZC08, respectively) plates were fabricated by ball milling, sintering and multi-step hot rolling technology. The microstructure, mechanical properties and thermal stability were studied to demonstrate the influence of ZrC contents. The results of Vickers hardness and tensile tests show that the WZC08 alloy has a higher hardness, larger tensile strength but lower ductility than that of the WZC02 alloy. The ductile brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of both WZC02 and WZC08 alloys are about 300 °C. The recrystallization temperature of the as-rolled WZC08 is between 1500 °C and 1600 °C, which is 200 °C higher than that of the as-rolled WZC02. The EBSD results indicate that there are strong [101] texture in both rolled WZC02 and WZC08 alloys. Microstructural analysis shows that the ZrC dispersion particles in as-rolled WZC02 have smaller particle sizes and uniform distributions but lower number densities than that in WZC08. By comparing with the pure W and WZC05, an optimal ZrC content is proposed to achieve a better comprehensive property including high tensile strength, good ductility and high thermal stability.

Solute segregation and nanoparticle dispersion induced super high stability in a bulk nanocrystalline W-based alloy

Improvement of the stability of nanocrystalline (NC) materials is always a challenge. In this paper, the high thermal stability is achieved in a representative NC W alloy by combining nano-segregation of Ti solute to W grain boundary (GBs), and in-situ formation of nano Ti–Zr–O particles, which provide both thermodynamic and kinetic stabilization effects through solute dragging and particle pinning. The recrystallization temperature of this bulk NC W alloy reaches up to 1600 oC, and these nanometric microstructures maintain stable under a long-time and high-temperature ordeal up to 1200 oC for 120 h. And its microhardness and micro-compressive yield strength are ∼17.0 and 5.14 GPa, respectively. In addition, this bulk NC W alloy has high irradiation stability due to the high densities of stabled GBs and phase boundaries. This work demonstrates the possibility of attaining high-stability bulk NC materials in terms of segregation of solutes at GBs and in-situ formation of ultrafine nanoparticles with a coherent interface with the W matrix.

The high thermal stability induced by a synergistic effect of ZrC nanoparticles and Re solution in W matrix in hot rolled tungsten alloy

The synergistic effect of ZrC nanoparticle pining and Re solution in W matrix on the thermal stability of tungsten was studied by investigating the evolution of the microstructure, hardness and tensile properties after annealing in a temperature range of 1000–1700 °C. The results of metallography, electron backscatter diffraction pattern and Vickers micro-hardness indicate that the rolled W-1wt%Re-0.5 wt%ZrC alloy has a higher recrystallization temperature (1600 °C–1700 °C) than that of the rolled pure W (1200 °C), W-0.5 wt%ZrC (1300 °C), W-0.5 wt%HfC (1400–1500 °C) and W–K-3wt%Re alloy fabricated by the same technology. The molecular dynamics simulation results indicated that solution Re atoms in W matrix can slow down the self-diffusion of W atoms and form dragging effect to delay the growth of W grain, moreover, the diffusion coefficient decrease with increasing Re content. In addition, the ZrC nanoparticles can pin the grain boundaries and dislocations effectively, preventing the recrystallization. Therefore, synergistic effect of solid solution Re element and dispersed ZrC nanoparticles significantly increase recrystallization temperature.

Focusing on the corrosion resistance enhancement of HRB400 rebar by Cr addition in the marine environment

The corrosion resistance of Cr reinforced HRB400 rebar in the marine environment was investigated. The addition of Cr increases the amount of Cr(OH)3 and α-FeOOH in the passivate film, resulting in a denser passivate film structure. This enhanced passivation film inhibits localized corrosion. The pitting potential and critical chloride concentration (CTL) of the steel increased with the increase in chromium content, indicating improved corrosion resistance of the steel. On the other hand, an increase in the concentration of Cl- in solution leads to a decrease in the pitting potential and resistance of the steel, which reduces the corrosion resistance. At higher Cl- concentrations, the Cl- ions form an electrochemical interface with the steel surface, resulting in a sharp decrease in the Rf value. In addition, the gradual decrease in solution pH leads to a decrease in the pitting potential and CTL of HRB400 and 1.5Cr steel. The corrosion resistance was also found to be reduced, pH reduction accelerated the intrusion of chloride ions, which led to a severe breakdown of the passivation film.

Temperature dependence of the deformation behavior and mechanical response of CoCrNi medium-entropy alloy: Experiment and simulation

Tailoring the microstructure of metallic materials by controlling the fabrication process is crucial to achieving superior mechanical properties. Herein, the mechanism of modifying the microstructure and mechanical properties of medium-entropy CoCrNi alloys was investigated by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) at room temperature (RT) and cryogenic temperature (CT) and post-deformation annealing (PDA) and was analyzed by molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that temperature influences the deformation mechanism of the alloy, dislocations, stacking faults, deformation twins, and FCC-HCP phase transitions, which assume different roles at different temperatures. The dislocation density of the ECAP-CT sample is significantly higher than that of the ECAP-RT sample; however, the ECAP-RT sample exhibits unique deformation features of kink bands and hierarchical twin structure, resulting in dynamic grain refinement effects. In addition, the HCP phase strength increment caused by annealing-induced HCP phase transformation is higher in the ECAP-RT sample than in the ECAP-CT sample, thus leading to a substantial increase in strength after PDA. The present study exhibits the strengthening mechanisms and provides a generic approach to obtaining desirable mechanical properties of alloys.
