Utility Metrics Specifications. OpenIoT Deliverable D422

This deliverable specifies the utility metrics that are considered and used in the scope of the OpenIoT project. These utility metrics are recorded as part of the implementation of the Utility Manager component of the OpenIoT platform, while they have also been used to drive the utility based optimization mechanisms of the project. In particular we provided the following contributions: We provide an analysis and summary of utility metrics for different data providers and environments, including physical sensors, sensor networks, and virtual sensors. These metrics can be used to measure utility for interconnected objects. We proposed utility functions that use metrics in order to compute valuation and cost functions. These functions can be used by utility-based optimization techniques. The utility based schemes proposed provide means and algorithms that can help selecting virtual sensors for efficient data collection. We describe utility metrics, tailored specifically for the OpenIoT use cases, indicating the relevant parameters (e.g. location, bandwidth, availability, privacy), and cost and valuation functions (if applicable).

A Configurable Distributed Data Analytics Infrastructure for the Industrial Internet of things

Executing analytics functionalities over data from highly distributed data sources and data streams is at the very core of the vast majority of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. State of the art streaming engines provide the means for high performance analytics over high velocity IIoT streams, yet they still need significant programming and customization efforts when deployed in heterogeneous industrial environments. This paper introduces a configurable engine for distributed data analytics for IIoT applications. The engine leverages the performance of state of the art data streaming middleware platforms, which it augments with a set of digital models for configuring DDA operations. As such the introduced engine reduces the effort needed to implement and deploy distributed data analytics in IIoT environments. The engine is available as open source software and has been validated in a various real-life IIoT applications in different environments.

Design principles for utility-driven services and cloud-based computing modelling for the Internet of Things

By following an analysis of the state of the art in the convergence of cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT), this paper presents design principles for the IoT in cloud environments. A framework for on-demand establishment of IoT services based on the automated formulation of societies of internet-connected objects is described and the interactions between architecture modules are explained in detail to validate this approach. The main building blocks of the functional framework and its operational components follow the utility-driven cloud-based computing model. The framework leverages well-known technologies (i.e. linked sensor data) and standards (notably the W3C semantic sensor networks ontology). Finally, an example for service formulation and delivery of services for a smart campus scenario is provided and discussed. This paper also introduces some experiment results using the utility-driven service formulation model for mobile applications.

Dissemination and activity report V1: FIESTA D7.1.1

This document describes the dissemination and communication activities for the FIESTA-IoT project for the period M1 (February 2015) to M12 (January 2015). The dissemination plan is also presented, first describing how promotional material, FIESTA-IoT results, and FIESTA-IoT activities will be used to promote and engage with target communities in order to increase awareness of FIESTA-IoT results, and the FIESTA experimental facility. This document cover the started in M1 dissemination activities but will intensify from M12 onwards in preparation for open calls and engagement with IoT Communities of experimenters and testbeds. The dissemination activities carried out in the first year are described and material generated during the first year is included; these already cover a broad range of activities and communities: • Scientific publications. • Participation (and presentation) at relevant (IoT) events, conferences, summer schools, workshops, meetings. • Demos and exhibitions. • Standards community events. An initial plan for the second year of the project (February 2016 to January 2017) is presented to conclude the report. This outlines potential joint publications for research results, and target events where the FIESTA-IoT facility can be demonstrated, and the upcoming Open Calls can be advertised. Finally, a mapping of the dissemination activities against the objective goals of the project is presented that also serves as self-evaluation for the progress in achievements of the FIESTA-IoT project.

Experimentation as a Service Over Semantically Interoperable Internet of Things Testbeds

Infrastructures enabling experimental assessment of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions are scarce. Moreover, such infrastructures are typically bound to a specific application domain, thus, not facilitating the testing of solutions with a horizontal approach. This paper presents a platform that supports Experimentation as s Service (EaaS) over a federation of IoT testbeds. This platform brings two major advances. First, it leverages semantic web technologies to enable interoperability so that testbed agnostic access to the underlying facilities is allowed. Second, a set of tools ease both the experimentation workflow and the federation of other IoT deployments, independently of their domain of interest. Apart from the platform specification, this paper presents how this design has been actually instantiated into a cloud-based EaaS platform that has been used for supporting a wide variety of novel experiments targeting different research and innovation challenges. In this respect, this paper summarizes some of the experiences from these experiments and the key performance metrics that this instance of the platform has exhibited during the experimentation.

Reference Architecture for AI-Based Industry 5.0 Applications

Abstract Industry 5.0 (I5.0) is a novel paradigm for the development and deployment of industrial applications based on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). It evolves Industry 4.0 in directions that exploit trustworthy human–AI interactions in human-in-the-loop scenarios. Despite the rising popularity of I5.0, there is still a lack of reference architectures (RAs) that outline the building blocks of I5.0 applications, along with the structuring principles for effectively integrating them in industrial systems. This chapter introduces a reference model for industrial applications that addresses critical elements and requirements of the I5.0, including human–robot collaboration, cybersecurity, safety, and trust. The model enhances state-of-the-art I4.0 Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) architectures with human-centered I5.0 features and functionalities. Based on this model, the present chapter introduces a set of blueprints that could ease the development, deployment, and operation of I5.0 applications. These blueprints address technical integration, trustworthy operations, as well as the ever-important compliance to applicable regulations such as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the emerging AI Act.
