Abstract Tomographic energy-dispersive diffraction imaging (TEOOI) is a technique, which exploits a well-defined energetic white X-ray beam from a synchrotron to gain diffraction information from volume elements within a bulk sample. Most tomographic methods rely on spectroscopic absorption or fluorescence signals to provide elementaUcompositional contrast; by comparison TEDDI provides structural contrast, through diffraction, irrespective of whether there is any elemental variation, At the heart of this technique is energy-dispersive diffraction (EDD), which is a mode of X-ray diffraction less-familiar to most researchers and is therefore briefly outlined prior to a basic description of the TEDDI technique; this technique is then illustrated by studies carried out on white beam instruments at the SRS (station 16.4) and ESRF (beamlines ID9 and 1030) synchrotron sources, with examples taken from materials/engineering science involving both static and dynamic systems. keywords: Tomographic energy-dispersive diffraction imagingdynamic diffraction tomographynon-equilibrium processmulti-angle EOD

Fabricating colloidal particles with photolithography and their interactions at an air-water interface

A technique for fabricating nonspherical colloidal particles using photolithography has been developed. The particles are plate shaped and their profile within the plane of the plate is defined by a lithography mask and so can be any form desired. The thickness of the particles can also be controlled by varying the amount of material in the particle, and also by using the stresses induced during the evaporation of materials to distort the particles out of the plane. The particle-particle interactions can be tailored and made anisotropic by coating different faces of the particles with different chemicals or by making them of different materials. This technique is used to produce curved disks that are hydrophobic on their convex face and hydrophilic on their concave face. These particles are studied at an air-water interface, where the majority lie with their hydrophobic face uppermost. The curvature of the particles distorts the water surface in a manner that can be described by a series expansion. The symmetry of this function is used to explain the interactions of the particles and the resulting ordered flocculated structures observed. Such anisotropic forces in two dimensions have not been studied previously on a colloidal length scale to our knowledge and extend the field of control of particles at interfaces.

We report on the mechanism of growth of mesoporous silica (SBA-15, plane group p6m). In situ studies of the formation using ultrasmall angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) covering length scales from 5 to 10,000 A, complemented with UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), provide unique data on particle growth coupled with information regarding the progression of the mesostructure formation and the micellar evolution.

The effect of electric fields on nonaqueous dispersions

Small angle neutron scattering has been used to investigate the structure of poly(methylmethacrylate) dispersions in dodecane in the presence of an electric field. In dodecane alone field effects were not observed. In the presence of calcium octanoate, however, the particles apparently become charged and increased ordering was observed. The effect of an electric field on the latter dispersions produced an anisotropy of structure which suggested that the particles were forming loose "strings of beads" in the direction of the applied field.

Adsorption of ammonium perfluorooctanoate and ammonium decanoate at the air/solution interface

The composition and structure of layers of ammonium decanoate (AMDEC) and ammonium perfluorooctanoate (APFO) adsorbed at the air/liquid interface have been studied by a combination of surface tension measurements and neutron reflectivity.At the critical micelle concentration (c.m.c.) and in solutions of pH = 8.8 and ionic strength 0.1, the areas occupied per surfactant anion were found to be 41 ± 2.5 Å2 for APFO and 35 ± 3 Å2 for AMDEC. In each case it was necessary to include fugacity corrections and to fit the surface pressure-In c curve by least squares for there to be agreement with the surface excess as measured by neutron reflection.The structure of the surfactant layers was determined at the c.m.c. using neutron reflectivity measurements on three different isotopic combinations of water and surfactant. The thickness of the APFO layer was found to be 20 ± 2 Å, ca. 30% larger than the fully extended chain length and the thickness of the AMDEC layer was 17 ± 2 Å, only ca. 15% greater than the fully extended chain length. Both model fitting and a more direct method of analysing the separation between surfactant chains and water suggest that the chains are ca. 25–30% immersed in the aqueous phase, with the APFO being slightly more immersed than the AMDEC.
