Electronic structure and magnetic properties of 3d−4f double perovskite material

Double-perovskite-based magnets wherein frustration and competition between emergent degrees of freedom are at play can lead to novel electronic and magnetic phenomena. In this paper, we report the electronic structure and magnetic properties of an ordered double perovskite material, ${\mathrm{Ho}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoMnO}}_{6}$. In the double perovskites with general class ${A}_{2}BB{}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ ($A$ = rare-earth ions; $B$, $B{}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ = transition metal ions), the octahedral $B$ and $B{}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ sites have a distinct crystallographic site. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction data reveals that ${\mathrm{Ho}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoMnO}}_{6}$ crystallizes in the monoclinic $P{2}_{1}/n$ space group. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the charge state of cations present in this material. The temperature dependence of magnetization and specific heat exhibits a long-range ferromagnetic ordering at ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}\ensuremath{\sim}76$ K owing to superexchange interaction between ${\mathrm{Co}}^{2+}$ and ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{4+}$ moments. Furthermore, the magnetization isotherm at 5 K shows a hysteresis curve that confirms the ferromagnetic behavior of this double perovskite. We observed a reentrant glassy state in the intermediate-temperature regime, which is attributed to inherent antisite disorder and competing interactions. A large magnetocaloric effect has been observed much below the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy studies support the presence of spin-phonon coupling and short-range order above ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ in this double perovskite. The stabilization of magnetic ordering and charge states is further analyzed through electronic structure calculations. The latter also infer the compound to be a narrow-band-gap insulator with the gap arising between the lower and upper Hubbard Co $d$ subbands. Our results demonstrate that antisite disorder and complex $3d\text{\ensuremath{-}}4f$ exchange interactions in the spin lattice account for the observed electronic and magnetic properties in this promising double perovskite material.

Magnetic and neutron diffraction studies on PrMnSb2

Magnetic and neutron diffraction studies have been carried out on PrMnSb2. Magnetization data in the temperature range of 5–400 K show two magnetic transitions: one at ∼175 K attributed to the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Mn moments, and the other at ∼35 K possibly due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Pr moments. The magnetization-field isotherms at various temperatures are consistent with the above. Neutron diffraction data obtained at various temperatures can be fitted with a nearly antiferromagnetically coupled Mn moment of ∼3μB at 70 K. At 10 K, moments both on Mn (∼3.5μB) and Pr (∼0.94μB) are ordered antiferromagnetically with small canting angles.

Barrier height enhancement of Ni/GaN Schottky diode using Ru based passivation scheme

Wet chemical passivation of n-GaN surface using Ru based solution has been reported. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization of the GaN surface revealed removal of surface oxides by the introduction of Ru complex species. Ni/n-GaN Schottky barrier diodes were fabricated on passivated GaN and a remarkable improvement in Schottky barrier height from 0.76 eV to 0.92 eV was observed.

Neutron structural studies on the superconducting (Nd1−xCax)(Ba1.6La0.4)Cu3Oz system

We have investigated the influence of Ca ion substitution on the structural and superconducting properties of (Nd1−xCax)(Ba1.6La0.4)Cu3Oz system. Magnetization, x-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction studies have been carried out on a series of compounds with x=0.0–0.6. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, determined from magnetization measurements, increases with increasing Ca2+ substitution. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that these compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure (space group P4∕mmm). A detailed analysis of the neutron diffraction data reveals that Ca and La ions are intermixed at the nominal Ba and Nd sites. While a major fraction of Ca ions occupy the usual Nd site, a small fraction occupies the Ba site. Consequently, the corresponding amount of La substitutes at the nominal Nd site. The intermixing of Ca and La sites randomizes the chain site oxygens leading to a tetragonal structure despite an oxygen content close to 7.0 for all the Ca doped samples. Further increase in Ca content leads to change in its coordination from sixfold to eightfold at x⩾0.4.

Synergetic effect of graphene oxide-carbon nanotube on nanomechanical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene nanocomposites

Herein, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), graphene oxide-carbon nanotubes (GCNTs) hybrid reinforced acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) nanocomposites have been prepared by micro twin screw extruder with back flow channel and the effect of different type of fillers on the nanomechanical properties are studied. The combination of both graphene oxide and CNT has enhanced the dispersion in polymer matrix and lower the probability of CNTs aggregation. GCNTs hybrid have been synthesized via novel chemical route and well characterized using Raman spectroscopic technique. The nanoindentation hardness and elastic modulus of GCNTs-ABS hybrid nanocomposites were improved from 211.3 MPa and 4.12 GPa of neat ABS to 298.9 MPa and 6.02 GPa, respectively at 5wt% GCNTs loading. In addition to hardness and elastic modulus, other mechanical properties i.e. plastic index parameter, elastic recovery, ratio of residual displacement after load removal and displacement at the maximum load and plastic deformation energy have also been investigated. These results were correlated with Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) techniques and microstructural characterizations (scanning electron microscopy). Our demonstration would provide guidelines for the fabrication of hard and scratches nanocomposite materials for potential use in, automotive trim components and bumper bars, carrying cases and electronic industries and electromagnetic interference shielding.
