SILICON DIODE FAST NEUTRON DOSIMETER. PHASE II. ISOCHRONAL AND ISOTHERMAL ANNEALS OF THE RADIATION DAMAGE.

Abstract : A discussion of the theory of annealing based on diffusion-limited processes is presented, along with the development of the characteristic equations for both monomolecular and bimolecular processes. A development of the theoretical dependence of the annealing characteristics on the chemical impurity concentration is also presented. Isochronal and isothermal anneals of the lifetime and forward voltage of p-i-n diodes, degraded by fast neutron bombardment, were performed over the temperature range from 23C to 200C. The diodes were made from both n- and p-type, pulled and float zone material. Resistivities ranged from 50 to 1000 ohm-cm. The isochronal and isothermal results indicated that there are three dominant defects: one which anneals at room temperature; one which anneals in the 50C to 120C temperature range; and another which starts to anneal above 120C. All defects anneal with second-order kinetics. None of the defects seems to be associated with chemical impurities originally present in the material. (Author)

The readout problem is discussed, and the development is described of an engineering readout instrument that provides an accurate means of making radiation measurements using radiac-type detectors. Consideration was given to the measurement of 2 parameters, carrier lifetime and forward resistance, both of which are functions of the total radiation exposure of the detector. The objective was to develop an engineering model of a readout device for measuring either lifetime or forward resistanxe. Tests indicated that the model of the readout instrument developed was capable of measuring the forward voltage drop across the radiac detector to an accuracy of about plus or minus 5 per cent under roomtemperature conditions. The radiation exposure of a given detector can therefore be determined from suitable voltageradiation calibration curves for the detector type. (auth)

The increasing need for the production of oxygen, hydrogen and other gases by low temperature separation techniques, and the production and transportation of LNG, emphasizes the importance of cryogenic (below -150 C) technology. This article deals with an important aspect of cryogenic instrumentation: the measurement of very low temperatures through diode, resistance and capacitance thermometry. These types of thermometry are explained, with their concepts and operations included in the explanation. Other types of thermometry are briefly described, and installation and application considerations are also discussed.
