Analysis of Thermal Reflow Process for Polymer Microlens Fabrication

Polymer microlens manufacturing using thermal reflow was simulated and optimized by a numerical approach. Microlenses are used in various industrial fields, such as optical, semiconductor, and observation experiment equipment. Therefore, polymer microlens fabrication using an economical thermal reflow process is important for mass production and cost reduction. The feasibility of a thermal reflow process for microlens fabrication was analyzed in this paper by numerical methods. First, we refer to the previous studies and papers for the theoretical shape of the microlens. Second, for numerical simulation of the process above Tg (Glass Transition Temperature), we studied the multiphase flow simulation using a VOF method and adopted a Cross-WLF model to consider the rheological characteristics of PMMA. Finally, several parametric studies were carried out to compare the simulation profile and the theoretical lens shape in order to optimize the thermal reflow process. The numerical approach presented in this paper would enable a more efficient analysis and provide better understanding of reflow behavior to obtain the optimal process.

Performance Degradation in Graphene–ZnO Barristors Due to Graphene Edge Contact

The physical and chemical characteristics of the edge states of graphene have been studied extensively as they affect the electrical properties of graphene significantly. Likewise, the edge states of graphene in contact with semiconductors or transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are expected to have a strong influence on the electrical properties of the resulting Schottky junction devices. We found that the edge states of graphene form chemical bonds with the ZnO layer, which limits the modulation of the Fermi level at the graphene-semiconductor junction, in a manner similar to Fermi level pinning in silicon devices. Therefore, we propose that graphene-based Schottky contact should be accomplished with minimal edge contact to reduce the limits imposed on the Fermi level modulation; this hypothesis has been experimentally verified, and its microscopic mechanism is further theoretically examined.

Analysis of RTM Process to Manufacture Composite Bogie Frame Considering Fiber Orientation

철도차량의 경량화 일환으로 대차 프레임 스킨제작에 복합소재를 적용하여 RTM 기법으로 제조하는 방안을 검토하였다. RTM 기법은 공정설비의 단순화 및 복잡한 형상의 대형 구조물을 짧은 시간에 제조할 수 있는 장점이 있다. RTM 공정에서는 구조물에 기공이 갇힐 수 있기 때문에 수지 주입구와 배출구의 개수 및 위치 선정이 중요하다. 이번 연구에서는 섬유 프리폼의 투과성 계수를 등방성과 이방성 특성으로 구분하여 RTM 성형특성을 수치해석을 통해 예측하였다. 그로부터 투과성 계수에 따른 기공 형성과 성형 시간의 예측 및 수지 배출구의 최적 위치 등 공정조건을 선정하기 위한 대차 프레임 스킨의 RTM 성형 충전패턴을 분석하였다. To reduce the weight of a railroad vehicle, a bogie frame skin is considered for manufacture using an RTM process and composite material. Compared to other processes, RTM has merits in that it demands only simple manufacturing facilities and can produce a large and complex structure in a short cycle time. On the other hand, it is important to determine the proper number and locations of gates and vents to prevent void formation inside a structure. In this study, we numerically predicted the flow pattern in a bogie frame skin during the RTM process by distinguishing the permeability of a fiber mat as isotropic or anisotropic. Using the results, we analyzed the RTM process conditions of the bogie frame to predict skin void formation, mold filling time, and optimum location of vents depending on the permeability conditions.

Tunable AC/DC converter using graphene-germanium barristor based half-wave rectifier

Tunable DC voltage control circuit based on a half-wave rectifier was developed using a graphene–germanium barristor. The output DC voltage level could be modulated at 30–100% of the peak voltage by controlling the Schottky barrier height between graphene and germanium using a gate bias. Owing to the simple and low-temperature integration process, this device can be used for a variable DC power supply in monolithically integrated circuits or flexible devices.
