Development of an FBG-based low temperature measurement system for cargo containment of LNG tankers

Given the growing demand for oil and natural gas to meet the world's energy needs, there is nowadays renewed interest in the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) systems. For LNG to remain in its liquid phase, the gas has to be kept at cryogenic temperatures (< 160°C). And, as part of the LNG supply process, it becomes necessary to transport it using massive carrier tankers with cargo hulls operating at low temperatures and using special insulating double-wall construction. The safe and reliable storage and transportation of LNG products calls for low temperature monitoring of said containers to detect the onset of any potential leaks and possible thermal insulation degradation. Because of the hazardous nature of this cargo, only intrinsically-safe, explosion proof devices can be used. Optical fiber sensors-- such as fiber Bragg gratings-- are ideal for this application given their dielectric nature and multi-point sensing telemetry capability. In this paper, we describe the development of an on-line, multi-point FBG-based low temperature monitoring system based on a network of specially packaged FBG temperature and strain sensors mounted at critical locations within the inner hull, cofferdam and secondary barriers of a LNG carrier tanker. Given the stringent cryogenic operating temperature conditions, pertinent FBG designs, coatings and packaging approaches were formulated along with adequate installation techniques and integration of the interrogating FBG electronics into the tanker's overall SCADA monitoring system. FBG temperature sensors were demonstrated to be stable and sensitive over the 80-480K range. Stability is ± 0.25K or better with repeated calibrations, and long term stability at 480K is ~0.2mK/hour.

Enhanced third-harmonic generation in silicon metasurface

We report the enhanced third-harmonic generation (THG) from a silicon metasurface consisting of an array of L-shaped nanoresonators. The L-shaped nanoresonator is designed as a small cuboid with a notch cut from one corner. And 16 × 15 L-shaped nanoresonators are arranged into an array with a square lattice. In order to fabricate the structure, a 600-nm-thick silicon layer is first deposited on a 500-μm-thick sapphire substrate, which is then patterned into the metasurface structure by using electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma dry etching process. To evaluate the linear optical property of the fabricated metasurface, a continuous-wave narrow band laser with a tunable wavelength range of 1530−1560 nm is employed to measure the transmission and reflection spectrum. The measurement results show a Fano resonance at a wavelength of 1548 nm when the incident laser is linearly polarized along the long arm of the L-shaped nanoresonator. Pumping at the resonant wavelength, the metasurface shows significant polarization sensitivity for the transmitted light and the reflected light. To excite the THG signal from the metasurface, a femtosecond pulsed laser with a tunable wavelength range of 1540−1560 nm is then employed as the pump. Strong THG signal is observed when the laser wavelength is tuned on the resonant wavelength (1548 nm), indicating a conversion efficiency of ～ 3×10<sup>–7</sup>. By comparing the THG signals triggered on- and off-resonance, an enhancement factor of 220 is extracted, which is attributed to the field-enhancement of the Fano resonance. The resonance enhanced THG signal also has polarization-dependence with an extinction ratio of 15 dB. These experimental results are verified well by numerical simulations based on a finite-element technique, including the Fano resonance and the enhanced THG process. By combining the numerically calculated electrical field of the resonant mode and the calculation of nonlinear polarizations, the resonance enhanced THG as well as its polarization-dependence are confirmed numerically. The realized strongly enhanced THG from the silicon metasurface promises to extend their linear optical functionalities into nonlinear regime.

Hybrid Grating in Reduced-Diameter Fiber for Temperature-Calibrated High-Sensitivity Refractive Index Sensing

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a hybrid grating, in which an excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG) and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) were co-inscribed in a reduced-diameter fiber (RDF). The hybrid grating showed strong resonances due to coupling among core mode and a set of polarization-dependent cladding modes. This coupling showed enhanced evanescent fields by the reduced cladding size, thus allowing stronger interaction with the surrounding medium. Moreover, the FBG’s Bragg resonance confined by the thick cladding was exempt from the change of the surrounding medium’s refractive index (RI), and then the FBG can work as a temperature compensator. As a result, the Ex-TFG in RDF promised a highly sensitive RI measurement, with a sensitivity up to ~1224 nm/RIU near the RI of 1.38. Through simultaneous measurement of temperature and RI, the temperature dependence of water’s RI is then determined. Therefore, the proposed hybrid grating with a spectrum of multi-peaks embedded with a sharp Bragg resonance is a promising alternative for the simultaneous measurement of multi-parameters for many RI-based sensing applications.

Tilted fiber grating polarizer in a 40-µm polarization-maintaining fiber

The optical polarizer is a crucial component widely used in many optical systems and applications. Fiber-optic polarizers have the merits of excellent compatibility and ease of integration with other fiber components. We report an in-line polarizer enabled by a 45° tilted fiber grating inscribed into a specialty fiber for the next generation fiber-optic gyroscope, i.e., a 40-µm ultra-fine-diameter tiger-type polarization-maintaining fiber with which the size of fiber-optic sensors can be miniaturized. The results show that a 40-mm-long polarizer operates at a center wavelength of around 830 nm with high-performance characteristics, such as a polarization extinction ratio exceeding 30 dB, a low insertion loss of less than 1.5 dB, and a large 3-dB optical bandwidth more than 60 nm. This kind of fiber-optic polarizer may have a broad scope across applications and systems such as fiber lasers and sensors, especially high-precision fiber-optic gyroscopes.

Suspended-core fiber with embedded GaSe nanosheets for second harmonic generation

We report an all-fiber scheme for the second harmonic generation (SHG) by embedding gallium selenide (GaSe) nanosheets into a suspended-core fiber (SCF). Based on modes analysis and theoretical calculations, the phase-matching modes from multiple optional modes in the SHG process and the optimal SCF length are determined by calculating the effective refractive index and balancing the SHG growth and transmission loss. Due to the long-distance interaction between pumped fundamental mode and GaSe nanosheets around the suspended core, an SHG signal is observed under a milliwatt-level pump light, and exhibits a quadratic growth with the increased pump power. The SHG process is also realized in a broad wavelength range by varying the pump in the range of 1420∼1700 nm. The SCF with the large air cladding and suspended core as an excellent platform can therefore be employed to integrate low-dimensional nonlinear materials, which holds great promise for the applications of all-fiber structures in new light source generating, signal processing and fiber sensing.

Continuous-wave pumped frequency upconversions in an InSe-integrated microfiber

We report the achievement of continuous-wave (CW)-pumped second-harmonic generation (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) in a layered indium selenide (InSe)-integrated microfiber. As a result of the strong interaction between the InSe nanosheets and the evanescent field, the second-order nonlinear processes are greatly enhanced in the InSe-integrated microfiber pumped by a few milliwatt CW lasers. The experimental results reveal that the intensities of SHG and SFG are quadratic and linear dependencies with the incident pump power, respectively, which is consistent with theoretical predictions. Additionally, the SHG intensity is strongly polarization-dependent on the nonaxisymmetrical distribution of the InSe nanosheets around the microfiber, providing the possibility of the SHG-polarized manipulation. The proposed device has the potential to be integrable into all-fiber systems for nonlinear applications.

Optical heterodyne micro-vibration measurement based on all-fiber acousto-optic frequency shifter

An all-fiber optical heterodyne detection configuration was proposed based on an all-fiber acousto-optic structure, which acted as both frequency shifter and coupler at the same time. The vibration waveform within a frequency range between 1 Hz to 200 kHz of a piezoelectric mirror was measured using this optical heterodyne detection system. The minimal measurable vibration amplitude and resolution are around 6 pm and 1 pm in the region of tens to hundreds of kilohertz, respectively. The configuration has advantages of compact size, high accuracy and non-contact measurement. Moreover, it is of a dynamically adjustable signal-to-noise ratio to adapt different surface with different reflections in the measurement, which will improve the usage efficiency of the light power.

Nanomaterial-Functionalized Tilted Fiber Gratings for Optical Modulation and Sensing

The tilted fiber grating (TFG) is a special grating whose grating planes are slanted or blazed relative to the fiber axis. These tilts in the planes break the cylindrical symmetry of the fiber, strongly enhance the light coupling from the fiber core to cladding, and resonantly excite a large number of cladding modes. Then, the TFGs with rich spectral information and strong evanescent field leaking out open up a multitude of opportunities for the enabled light-matter interaction by functionalizing their surface with nanomaterials. In this review, we briefly analyze the architectures, coupling mechanisms, spectral properties, and implementations of different TFGs, including weakly tilted Bragg grating with small tilt angle, radiated TFG with 45° tilt angle, excessively TFG with large tilt angle, etc. Further, the sensing enhancement and spectral modulation by integrating layered nanomaterials on TFGs are discussed, which could be considered as a promising strategy to break the limitation of fiber's one-dimensional structure and promote the light-matter interaction for enhanced and extended applications in optical parameter modulation and sensing.
