FLOOD INUNDATION MAPPING OF GODAVARI RIVER BY USING 2D HEC-RAS MODEL

Due to increasing urbanization, there are various drastic changes taking place in environment these changes are hazardous for human being as well as animal and environment. Effect of environmental degradation can create environmental issues such as flood, drought etc. Out of this flood is the most common and disastrous hazard in the world. Present study utilizes 2D Unsteady flow modelling for flood inundation mapping in the lower Godavari basin for a reach length of 70 km from Sambaigudem in Telanagana district of Ramanujavaram to Damaracherla in Andhra Pradesh district of Nalgonda. For analysis of this 2D flow modelling and inundation mapping 30m resolution DEM is used. From ancient time majority of cities are developed near or on the banks of the river and these cities were affected due to flood during rainy season or due to the high intensity rainfall. As India is among the most vulnerable to flooding because of its geographical features. Therefore, this study is performed to analyze the flood plain and the extent of the affected areas present on or near the bank of Godavari River and provide mitigation measures for it.

Impact of Climate Change on Runoff Generation in the Upper Godavari River Basin, India

The probable impacts of climate change on water resources are of great concern to hydrologists, water managers, and policymakers. The impact of climate change on hydrological variables in the upper Godavari River basin has not been studied and was the focus of this research. Two general circulation model (GCMs), the Hadley Centre Coupled Model, Version 3 (HadCM3) and the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis's Coupled Global Climate Model, Version 3 (CGCM3), which have been shown to produce good results in India, were used to study climate change impacts in the study area. Downscaled projected results of a statistical downscaling model (SDSM) were used to simulate runoff for future climatic scenarios using the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT). The SWAT model was calibrated using the sequential uncertainty fitting algorithm. The Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and the determination coefficient (R2) were used for performance assessment during calibration and validation. The values of both NSE and R2 were 0.63 during calibration and 0.71 during validation for the daily time step. The SWAT simulation results showed that at the end of the 21st century, the increase in runoff will be 70% and 61% under Scenarios A2 and A1B (obtained using the CGCM3 model) and 47% and 36% under Scenarios A2 and B2 (obtained using the HadCM3 model). Because the downscaling results showed a greater R2 value for the HadCM3 model than for the CGCM3 model, the runoff scenario developed using the HadCM3 model will be used for future water resource planning and management.

The Hydrologic Engineering Centers Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) is a popularly used watershed model to simulate rainfall- runoff process. Hydrological modeling is a commonly used tool to estimate the basin’s hydrological response due to precipitation. It allows to predict the hydrologic response to various watershed management practices and to have a better understanding of the impacts of these practices. It is evident from the extensive review of the literature that the studies on comparative assessment of watershed models for hydrologic simulations are very much limited in developing countries including India. In this study, modified SCS Curve Number method is applied to determine loss model as a major component in rainfall-runoff modeling. The study of HEC-HMS model is used to simulate rainfallrunoff process in Nashik region (Upper Godavari basin), Maharashtra. To compute runoff volume, peak runoff rate, and flow routing methods SCS curve number, SCS unit hydrograph, Exponential recession and Muskingum routing methods are chosen, respectively. The results of the present study indicate that HEC-HMS tool applied to watershed proved to be useful in achieving the various objectives. HYDROLOGICAL IMPACT OF LAND USE AND LAND COVER CHANGE IN THE UPPER GODAVARI BASIN, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA

This study examines how changes in land use in the Upper Godavari River Basin of India affect hydrology. The ArcView Interface of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (AVSWAT2000) was utilized to figure out the alteration in land use. With the LANDSAT data that was accessible in ArcMap, landcover maps for the years 2003, 2013, and 2023 were created. The WRIS portal, sourcing ground water level data for 2003, 2013, and 2023 as well as the river point data for 2003 to 2013 by CADA, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar formed the linking components. According to the study, there was a discernible growth in the areas of other basin components during these three decades, whereas there was a notable decline in the scrubland area (89.59%). In addition, a decrease in ground water levels was observed along with an increase in river discharge. Increased urbanization in the river basin was the main factor causing discharge to rise and ground water levels to fall at the sub-basinal scale. According to these findings, the SWAT model seemed to be a helpful tool for identifying LULC changes so that the relationship between LULC, river discharge, and ground water levels may be better understood.

Assessment of Climate Change for Precipitation and Temperature Using Statistical Downscaling Methods in Upper Godavari River Basin, India

In the present study SDSM downscaling model was used as a tool for downscaling weather data statistically in upper Godavari river basin. Two Global Climate Models (GCMs), CGCM3 and HadCM3, have been used to project future maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin) and precipitation. The predictor variables are extracted from: 1) the National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis dataset for the period 1961-2003, 2) the simulations from the third-generation Hadlycentre Coupled Climate Model (HadCM3) and Coupled Global Climate Model (CGCM3) variability and changes in Tmax, Tmin and precipitation under scenarios A1B and A2 of CGCM3 model and A2 and B2 of HadCM3 model have been presented for future periods: 2020s, 2050s and 2080s. The scatter-plots and cross-correlations are used for verifying the reliability of the simulation. Maximum temperature increases in future for almost all the scenarios for both GCMs. Also downscaled future precipitation shows increasing trends for all scenarios.
