Atomized Copper-Decorated Nitrogen-Doped Porous Carbon Fibers as a Self-Standing Air Cathode for Flexible Zinc–Air Batteries

Development of self-standing electrodes is highly desirable for flexible electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of atomized copper-decorated nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers by pyrolyzing g-C3N4-modified electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers directly from copper paper. The concurrent PAN fiber pyrolysis and copper paper atomization allow for diffusion of Cu atoms into the nitrogen-doped carbon framework. The as-prepared atomized copper-decorated nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers possess a high surface area of 604.5 m2 g–1 and a pore volume of 1.70 cm3 g–1, with Cu atomically dispersed inside the N-doped carbon framework in the form of Cu–N4 active sites. The Cu incorporation leads to a positive shift of the half-wave potential in oxygen reduction reactions by 84 mV in an alkaline electrolyte. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) of the self-assembled flexible zinc–air battery reaches 1.37 V using the synthesized nanofiber membrane as self-standing cathode and decreases slightly with the increase in bending angles. The as-prepared material is also applied in a liquid zinc–air battery, delivering a power density of 100 mW cm–2 at a current density of 150 mA cm–2 with a remaining voltage above 1.0 V after discharging at 10 mA cm–2 for 292 h.

High‐Yield Synthesis of Crystal‐Phase‐Heterostructured 4H/fcc Au@Pd Core–Shell Nanorods for Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

Noble-metal nanomaterials are attracting increasing research interest due to their promising applications in electrochemical catalysis, for example. Although great efforts have been devoted to the size-, shape-, and architecture-controlled synthesis of noble-metal nanomaterials, their crystal-phase-controlled synthesis is still in its infancy. Here, for the first time, this study reports high-yield synthesis of Au nanorods (NRs) with alternating 4H/face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal-phase heterostructures via a one-pot wet-chemical method. The coexistence of 4H and fcc phases is relatively stable, and the 4H/fcc Au NRs can serve as templates for crystal-phase-controlled epitaxial growth of other metals. As an example, bimetallic 4H/fcc Au@Pd core-shell NRs are synthesized via the epitaxial growth of Pd on 4H/fcc Au NRs. Significantly, the 4H/fcc Au@Pd NRs show superior mass activity toward the ethanol oxidation reaction, i.e., 6.2 and 4.9 times those of commercial Pd black and Pt/C catalysts, respectively. It is believed that this new synthetic strategy can be used to prepare other novel catalysts for various promising applications.

Preparation of 1T′-Phase ReS_2xSe_2(1-x) (x = 0–1) Nanodots for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

As a source of clean energy, a reliable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) requires robust and highly efficient catalysts. Here, by combining chemical vapor transport and Li-intercalation, we have prepared a series of 1T′-phase ReS2xSe2(1-x) (x = 0–1) nanodots to achieve high-performance HER in acid medium. Among them, the 1T′-phase ReSSe nanodot exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution activity, with a Tafel slope of 50.1 mV dec–1 and a low overpotential of 84 mV at current density of 10 mA cm–2. The excellent hydrogen evolution activity is attributed to the optimal hydrogen absorption energy of the active site induced by the asymmetric S vacancy in the highly asymmetric 1T′ crystal structure.

NbS₂ Nanosheets with M/Se (M = Fe, Co, Ni) Codopants for Li⁺ and Na⁺ Storage

Transition metal (M = Fe, Co, Ni) and Se codoped two-dimensional uniform NbS2 (MxNb1–xS2–ySey) nanosheets were synthesized via a facile oil-phase synthetic process. The morphology of MxNb1–xS2–ySey can be adjusted by tuning the amount of metal and Se introduced into NbS2. Among them, the optimized Fe0.3Nb0.7S1.6Se0.4 nanosheets, with lateral sizes of 1–2 μm and approximately 5 nm thick, achieve the best Li-ion and Na-ion storage properties. For example, the Fe0.3Nb0.7S1.6Se0.4 nanosheets depict excellent rate capabilities with fifth-cycle specific capacities of 461.3 mAh g–1 at 10 A g–1 for Li storage and 136 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1 for Na storage. More significantly, ultralong cyclic stabilities were achieved with reversible specific capacities of 444 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1 during the 3000th cycle for Li storage and 250 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1 during the 750th cycle for Na storage. Post-treatment high-resolution transmission electron microscopy was studied to prove that the reversible Li-ion storage in NbS2 was based on a conversion reaction mechanism.

Liquid-phase growth of platinum nanoparticles on molybdenum trioxide nanosheets: an enhanced catalyst with intrinsic peroxidase-like catalytic activity

A facile method for the synthesis of metal nanostructure-decorated two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor nanosheets was developed. The solution-processable molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) nanosheet was used as a template for direct liquid-phase growth of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) under ambient conditions. Results show that the Pt NPs with sizes of 1–3 nm were uniformly grown on the MoO3 surface. Importantly, the Pt-MoO3 hybrid nanomaterial exhibits an enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity compared to the MoO3 nanosheet, Pt NPs, and their physical mixture under the same conditions. As a proof-of-concept application, the Pt-MoO3 hybrid nanomaterial was used as a high-efficiency peroxidase-mimic for ultrasensitive colorimetric detection of glucose in serum samples. This work provides a promising strategy for design and development of biomimetic catalysts by smart assembly of different dimensional nanomaterials.

Analysis and Experimental Validation of a New Topology of Parallel Hybrid Excitation Machine

In this paper, a new topology of parallel hybrid excitation machine (PHEM) with rated power of 500kW is proposed and analyzed. The proposed PHEM axially combines a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with a brushless field excitation machine (BFEM), thus inheriting the advantages of the two machines, i.e. the high power density of PMSM and the field-regulating capability of BFEM. First, the configuration and operation principle of the PHEM are analyzed. Then, the performances, including no-load, rated-load and short-circuit fault, of the first axial part (i.e. the PMSM) and the second axial part (i.e. the BFEM) are investigated by 2D and 3D finite element analysis (FEA), respectively. Also, the overall performances of the PHEM are predicted and analyzed. Finally, a prototype of the 500kW PHEM is built and tested. The experimental results have verified the theoretical analyses of the PHEM.
