Condensed Tantalaborane Clusters: Synthesis and Structures of [(Cp*Ta)₂B₅H₇{Fe(CO)₃}₂] and [(Cp*Ta)₂B₅H₉{Fe(CO)₃}₄]

The reaction of [(Cp*Ta)2B4H9(μ-BH4)] (1; Cp* = η5-C5Me5) with [Fe2(CO)9] in hexane yielded [(Cp*Ta)2B5H7{Fe(CO)3}2] (2) and [(Cp*Ta)2B5H9{Fe(CO)3}4] (3) in moderate yield. Cluster 2 represents the first example of a bicapped pentagonal-bipyramidal metallaborane with a deformed equatorial plane, and 3 can be described as a fused cluster in which two pentagonal-bipyramidal units are fused through a common 3-vertex triangular face. Compounds 2 and 3 have been characterized by mass spectrometry and IR, 1H, 11B, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the geometric structures were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis.

Borylene-Based Direct Functionalization of Organic Substrates: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photophysical Properties of Novel π-Conjugated Borirenes

Room temperature photolysis of aminoborylene complexes, [(CO)(5)M=B=N(SiMe(3))(2)] (1: M = Cr, 2: Mo) in the presence of a series of alkynes and diynes, 1,2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyne, 1,2-bis(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)ethyne, 1,4-diphenylbuta-1,3-diyne, 1,4-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)buta-1,3-diyne, 1,4-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)benzene and 2,5-bis(4-N,N-dimethylaminophenylethynyl)thiophene led to the isolation of novel mono and bis-bis-(trimethylsilyl)aminoborirenes in high yields, that is [(RC=CR)(mu-BN(SiMe(3))(2)], (3: R = C(6)H(4)-4-OMe and 4: R = C(6)H(4)-4-CF(3)); [{(mu-BN(SiMe(3))(2)(RC=C-)}(2)], (5: R = C(6)H(5) and 6: R = C(6)H(4)-4-OMe); [1,4-bis-{(mu-BN(SiMe(3))(2)(SiMe(3)C=C)}benzene], 7 and [2,5-bis-{(mu-BN(SiMe(3))(2) ((C(6)H(4)NMe(2))C=C)}-thiophene], 8. All borirenes were isolated as light yellow, air and moisture sensitive solids. The new borirenes have been characterized in solution by (1)H, (11)B, (13)C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis and the structural types were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis of compounds 6 and 7. DFT calculations were performed to evaluate the extent of pi-conjugation between the electrons of the carbon backbone and the empty p(z) orbital of the boron atom, and TD-DFT calculations were carried out to examine the nature of the electronic transitions.

Heterodimetallaboranes of Group 4 and 9 Metals: Analogues of Pentaborane(11) and Hexaborane(12)

Several early–late heterodimetallaborane clusters have been isolated and structurally characterized through spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis. The thermolysis of [Cp 2 Zr(BH 4 ) 2 ] (Cp = η 5 ‐C 5 H 5 ) with [Cp*IrB 3 H 9 ] (Cp* = η 5 ‐C 5 Me 5 ) and [(Cp*Rh) 2 B 2 H 6 ] yielded arachno ‐[(Cp 2 Zr)(Cp*Ir)B 3 H 9 ] ( 2 ) and arachno ‐[(Cp 2 Zr)(Cp*Rh)B 4 H 10 ] ( 4 ), respectively. In a similar fashion, the reaction of [Cp 2 Hf(BH 4 ) 2 ] was performed with the same set of group 9 metallaboranes that led to the formation of arachno ‐[(Cp 2 Hf)(Cp*M′)B 4 H 10 ] ( 5 : M′ = Ir; 6 : M′ = Rh). To the best of our knowledge, 2 is the first structurally characterized pentaborane(11) analogue containing zirconium, while the clusters 5 and 6 are the first examples with Hf in a hexaborane(12) core. The bonding between the Zr atoms and the boron ring was studied computationally by DFT methods, and 2 can be defined as a dimetallic analogue of arachno ‐B 5 H 11 on the basis of the combined experimental and computational results.
