Unconventional Dually‐Mobile Superrepellent Surfaces

Abstract The ability of water droplets to move freely on superrepellent surfaces is a crucial feature that enables effective liquid repellency. Common superrepellent surfaces allow free motion of droplets in the Cassie state, with the liquid resting on the surface textures. However, liquid impalement into the textures generally leads to a wetting transition to the Wenzel state and droplet immobilization on the surface, thereby destroying the liquid repellency. This study reports the creation of a novel type of superrepellent surface through rational structural control combined with liquid‐like surface chemistry, which allows for the free movement of water droplets and effective repellency in both the Cassie and Wenzel states. Theoretical guidelines for designing such surfaces are provided, and experimental results are consistent with theoretical analysis. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the enhanced ice resistance of the dually‐mobile superrepellent surfaces, along with their distinctive self‐cleaning capability to eliminate internal contaminants. This study expands the understanding of superrepellency and offers new possibilities for the development of repellent surfaces with exceptional anti‐wetting properties.

Superb Low Threshold Surface-Plasmon Polariton ZnO Nanolasers on an Aluminum Film with Tailored MoO₃ and Ta₂O₅ Dielectric Interlayers of Varied Thickness

Effects of high-k dielectric MoO3 and Ta2O5 interlayers on the lasing thresholds of ZnO/high-k material/Al nanolasers have been investigated. The results demonstrated the high-dielectric-constant materials as the interlayers over the epitaxially grown aluminum (Al) film consisting of high-quality ZnO nanowires constructing superb low threshold surface-plasmon polariton lasers. High-quality ZnO nanowires grown via the chemical vapor deposition process were used as the gain media placed over a single-crystalline Al film deposited via molecular beam epitaxy. For high metallic losses in the Al film, high k-dielectric material films (MoO3 and Ta2O5), deposited using the electron beam technique, are inserted in the midst of the Al film and ZnO nanowires to reduce the material losses and enhance the optical confinement. It has been found that the lasing threshold varies with the increasing thickness and reduces while increasing the dielectric constant. The performances are compared with those of similarly fabricated nanolasers with Al2O3 and WO3 dielectric interlayers. The critical roles of dielectric constants of the dielectric interlayers in influencing the thresholds of lasing are elucidated. Highly suppressed losses in lasing can be attributed to the dielectric layer that manifests the strong energy confinement in the sub regime. It also shows that the correlation of the lasing threshold with the dielectric constant value applies mainly to the same laser system. For different systems, other factors such as the crystallinity and defects present should be taken into consideration.

Management of the perineal wounds following excision of the rectum for malignancy.

In a retrospective study, 103 patients undergoing abdominoperineal resection or total proctocolectomy due to rectal adenocarcinoma or familial polyposis with malignant change in the rectum were included. The methods for treating the pelvic and perineal wounds were divided into four categories: (1) suture of the pelvic peritoneum with open drainage, (2) suture of the pelvic peritoneum and perineum with simple drainage, (3) suture of the pelvic peritoneum and perineum with suction drainage, and (4) suture of the perineum with omental pedicle graft. The parameters analyzed were incidence of perineal wound infection, primary healing of the perineum, extraperineal complications and mean hospital stay. The infective rate of the group 1 was significantly higher than for the other groups. The incidence of primary wound healing for groups 2, 3, 4 was 73%, 78%, 81% respectively compared with group 1 of 20% at one month. There was no significant difference between the various groups regarding extraperineal complications. There was no significant difference in hospital stay among groups 2, 3, 4, but they were significantly shorter than for group 1. Primary closure of the pelvic peritoneum and perineal wound with simple drainage is now adopted by us due to its low infection rate, short hospital stay and easy performance.

Application of a Modified Ecological Quality Monitoring Method in the Southeastern Hilly Region of China

The southeastern hilly region of China is ecologically significant but highly vulnerable to climate change and human activities. This study developed a Modified Remote Sensing Ecological Index (MRSEI) using satellite imagery and Human Footprint data to assess ecological quality across 14 cities surrounding the Wuyi Mountains. We applied Sen’s slope analysis, the Mann–Kendall test, and spatial autocorrelation to evaluate spatiotemporal ecological changes from 2000 to 2020, and used partial correlation analysis to explore the drivers of these changes. The main findings are as follows: (1) Ecological quality generally improved over the study period, with significant year-to-year fluctuations. The eastern region, characterized by higher altitudes, consistently exhibited better ecological quality than the western region. The area of low-quality ecological zones significantly decreased, while Ji’an, Ganzhou, Heyuan, and Meizhou saw the most notable improvements. In contrast, urban areas experienced a marked decline in ecological quality. (2) The region is undergoing warming and wetting trends. Increased precipitation, especially in the western and northern regions, improved ecological quality, except in urban areas, where it heightened flood risks. Rising temperatures had mixed effects: they enhanced ecological quality in high-altitude areas (~516 m) but negatively impacted low-altitude regions (~262 m) due to intensified heat stress. (3) Although industrial restructuring reduced environmental pressure, rapid population growth and urban expansion created new ecological challenges. This study provides an innovative method for the ecological monitoring of hilly regions, effectively integrating human activity and climatic factors into ecological assessments. The findings offer valuable insights for sustainable development and ecological management in similar sensitive regions.

Molecular mechanism of lncRNA SNHG12 in immune escape of non-small cell lung cancer through the HuR/PD-L1/USP8 axis

The pivotal role of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in cancer immune responses has been well established. This study was conducted with the aim of exploring the molecular mechanism of lncRNA small nucleolar RNA host gene 12 (SNHG12) in immune escape of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Expression of lncRNA SNHG12, programmed cell death receptor ligand 1 (PD-L1), ubiquitin-specific protease 8 (USP8), and human antigen R (HuR) in NSCLC tissues and cells was measured, and their binding relationship was determined. NSCLC cell proliferation and apoptosis were assessed. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were co-cultured with NSCLC cells. The ratio of CD8+ T cells, PBMC proliferation, and inflammatory factors were determined. lncRNA SNHG12 localization was assessed via subcellular fractionation assay. The half-life period of mRNA was determined using actinomycin D. Xenograft tumor models were established to confirm the role of lncRNA SNHG12 in vivo.LncRNA SNHG12 was found to be prominently expressed in NSCLC tissues and cells, which was associated with a poor prognosis. Silencing lncRNA SNHG12 resulted in the reduction in proliferation and the promotion of apoptosis of NSCLC cells, while simultaneously increasing PBMC proliferation and the ratio of CD8+ T cells. Mechanically, the binding of lncRNA SNHG12 to HuR improved mRNA stability and expression of PD-L1 and USP8, and USP8-mediated deubiquitination stabilized the protein level of PD-L1. Overexpression of USP8 or PD-L1 weakened the inhibition of silencing lncRNA SNHG12 on the immune escape of NSCLC. Silencing lncRNA SNHG12 restricted tumor growth and upregulated the ratio of CD8+ T cells by decreasing USP8 and PD-L1.LncRNA SNHG12 facilitated the immune escape of NSCLC by binding to HuR and increasing PD-L1 and USP8 levels.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the spleen--a case report.

A 36-year-old woman had suffered from epigastric fullness for half a year. A splenic mass was found by ultrasonography. She was treated with splenectomy. Inflammatory pseudotumor of the spleen was diagnosed pathologically. This benign tumor in the spleen is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only 67 cases had been reported in the literature. Recognition of this rare entity is important because it may mimic splenic malignancy clinically and radiographically.

Photoelectric Properties of SnO2/Ti/GZO Multilayer Thin Film after Annealing at Different Temperatures for Photosensor Applications

In this study, RF magnetron sputtering is employed to deposit a SnO 2 /Ti/GZO (TTG) transparent conductive film on a Corning glass substrate to investigate the effect of the annealing temperature on the electrical properties, transmittance characteristics, surface properties, and structural properties of a TTG conductive film.The results show that upon annealing at 300 ℃, the minimum resistance was achieved by the TTG multilayer film, i.e., 1.57 × 10 -2 Ω•cm.Regarding the transmittance characteristics of all multilayer films, it is evident that the higher the annealing temperature, the higher the mean transmittance, but above an annealing temperature of 300 ℃, the transmittance decreases slightly.
