Introduction to Occupant Modeling

With the fundamental and design processes established, this chapter dives into occupant modeling theory and techniques. Following Chapter 2, it starts with basic concepts of occupant behavior and occupant actions. It provides some retrospective analysis of how occupants are currently modeled in design practice and building codes (based on several recent international surveys). Next, the chapter reviews a wide spectrum of models in increasing levels of complexity, including: schedules, rule-based models, various stochastic models, agent-based models, and personas. With the types of models established, theoretical and practical insights are provided regarding model development and verification. While this chapter is mainly focused on theory, it also provides an overview of methods to incorporate occupant models into BPS tools. Finally, with the introduction of more complex and less transparent occupant models, the chapter provides some examples and insights about communicating their results to different stakeholders.

Statistical Modelling of Occupant Behaviour

Do you have data on occupant behaviour, indoor environment or energy use in buildings? Are you interested in statistical analysis and modelling? Do you have a specific (research) question and dataset and would like to know how to answer the question with the data available? Statistical Modelling of Occupant Behaviour covers a range of statistical methods and models used for modelling energy- and comfort-related occupant behaviour in buildings. It is a classical textbook on statistics, including many practical examples related to occupant behaviour that are either taken from real research problems or adapted from such. The main focus is traditional statistical techniques based on the likelihood principle that can be applied to occupant behaviour modelling, including: General, generalised linear and survival models Mixed effect and hierarchical models Linear time series and Markov models Linear state space and hidden Markov models Illustration of all methods using occupant behaviour examples implemented in R The built environment affects occupants who live and work in it, and occupants affect the built environment by adapting it to their needs – for example, by adapting their indoor environments by interacting with building components and systems. These adaptive behaviours account for great uncertainty in the prediction of building energy use and indoor environmental conditions. Occupant behaviour is complex and multi-disciplinary but can be successfully modelled using statistical approaches. Statistical Modelling of Occupant Behaviour is written for researchers and advanced practitioners who work with real-world applications and modelling of occupant data. It describes the kinds of statistical models that may be used in various occupant behaviour modelling research. It gives a theoretical overview of these methods and then applies them to the study of occupant behaviour using readily replaceable examples in the R environment that are based on actual and experimental data.

Contextual differences in the perception of thermal comfort scales – the data base from a large-scale international questionnaire study

Within the IEA EBC Annex 69 on Strategy and Practice of Adaptive Thermal Comfort in Low Energy Buildings (http://annex69.org/), we are conducting an international questionnaire study related to thermal comfort scales. Our objective is the analysis of influences on the perception of thermal comfort scales. In particular, we are looking at the effect of the current thermal state, peoples climatic background, and level of adaptation on the relationship between thermal sensation, thermal comfort, and thermal acceptance.

Applying adaptive principles: Developing guidance for planning practice

One of the major challenges of building industry today is to provide indoor spaces allowing the occupants to make themselves comfortable while achieving low energy consumption. Considering the observed increasing temperatures and a more extreme climate, this becomes even more urgent and difficult to accomplish. It is therefore necessary to rely on approaches than contribute to sustainable building design, such as the adaptive approach to thermal comfort which postulates that people are not passive recipients of their environment but adapt behaviourally, physiologically and psychologically. The concept of adaptive thermal comfort was formulated many decades ago and has been validated in numerous field studies. Temperature thresholds based on adaptive models have been included in international and national standards. However, the overall understanding of how to translate the adaptive principles into design practice and concepts for operating buildings is still limited. Subtask B of IEA Annex 69 addresses this gap: “Strategy and practice of adaptive thermal comfort in low energy buildings”. The subtask aims to develop guidelines for low energy buildings that include the principle of adaptive comfort. This paper discusses the challenges and gaps identified in using the principles of adaptive thermal comfort in building design and operation and outlines the contents of the imminent guideline.
