Using powder metallurgy technique, the carbonization of(Ti+C)was carried out and TiC/Fe matrix composite was fabricated by in-situ reaction in vacuum furnace. The microstructure of the composite was investigated using X-ray diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscope(SEM);with the help of differential thermal analysis (DTA),the reaction mechanism of the Fe-Ti-C system was discussed. The results show that the synthesized composite consists of fine TiC particles andα-Fe phase.TiC particles exhibit fine size and homogeneous distribution in the matrix; The reaction mechanism is as follows:first, allotropic changeα-Fe→γ-Fe at 765.6℃;second,formation of the compound Fe_2Ti at 1078.4℃because of the eutectic reaction between Ti and Fe;third, reaction C+Fe_2Ti→TiC at 1138.2℃.
