In the study of Soo Young Kim, Pill-Hoon Choung, and Jong Hoon Chung, and co-workers, the combinational use of reduced graphene oxide and pulsed electromagnetic fields is reported to enhance multidifferentiation of human stem cells, e.g., osteogenesis, neurogenesis and adipogenesis on page 2069. In particular, these days electromagnetic-field-based therapy is preferred in clinical application due to its noninvasiveness. Therefore, the method will not only be easily applied in clinical study, but also eventually change clinical methods.

Comparison of Graphene Oxide with Reduced Graphene Oxide as Hole Extraction Layer in Organic Photovoltaic Cells

A comparison was performed between the use of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a hole extraction layer (HEL) in organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells with poly(3-hexylthiophene):phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester. Hydrazine hydrate (HYD) and the thermal method (Thermal) were adopted to change the GO to rGO. The GO HEL was deposited on an indium tin oxide electrode by spin coating, followed by the reduction process to form the rGO HELs. The success of the reduction processes was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, transmittance, and 2-point probe method. The OPV cell with the GO (-3 nm) HEL exhibits an increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 2.5% under 100 mW/cm2 illumination under air mass conditions, which is higher than that of the OPV cell without HEL, viz. 1.78%. However, the PCE of the OPV cell with rGO HEL is not high as the values of 1.8% for the HYD-rGO and 1.9% for the Thermal-rGO. The ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy results showed that the work function of GO was 4.7 eV, but those of HYD-rGO and Thermal-rGO were 4.2 eV and 4.5 eV, respectively. Therefore, it is considered that GO is adequate to extract the holes from the active layer, but HYD-rGO and Thermal-rGO are not appropriate to use as HELs in OPV cells from the viewpoint of the energy alignment.

Antioxidant enzymes, scavengers of the reactive oxygen intermediate (ROI), are involved in numerous defense systems in cells. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the hot-water extracts of two medicinally potent mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum and Phellinus lieiteus) on the activity and expression of antioxidant enzymes in vitro and in vivo. The mushroom extracts stimulated the catalase activity in a dose-dependent manner in vitro, whereas the other antioxidant enzymes (such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)) were unaffected by the extracts. The catalytic activity of catalase in the liver and brain was significantly increased after the oral treatment of the mushroom extracts (2.5 g/㎏) to ICR mice for 2 months. Western blot analysis of the liver and brain tissues revealed that the expression level of catalase in the mice, treated with both mushroom extracts, was significantly increased compared to that of the control mice. However, the level of the SOD expression in the mice treated with the natural product extracts was unchanged under the same experimental conditions. Although the mechanisms for the stimulatory effect of the catalase expression by these extracts remains unclear, these results suggest that the ingredients of the Ganoderma lucidum and Phellinus linteus extracts act as an activator of catalase, and regulate the expression of catalase at the translationat or transcriptional level.

Effect of ZnCdSe/ZnSe Core/Shell Quantum Dots on the Efficiency of Organic Photovoltaic Cells

We report on the effect of ZnCdSe/ZnSe core/shell quantum dots (QDs) on the efficiency of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. The QDs were deposited on the back side of indium tin oxide (ITO)/glass substrates by spin coating with poly(methyl methacrylate). The short circuit current and power conversion efficiency of the OPV cells on the ITO/glass/QDs + PMMA substrate (8.5 mA/cm2 and 3.2%) are lower than those of the control device on the ITO/glass substrate (9.0 mA/cm2 and 3.4%), due to the low transmittance of the QDs + PMMA and discordance between the emission peak of the QDs and absorption peak of the active area in the OPV cells. It is anticipated that the usage of QDs whose emission peak is coincident with the absorption peak of the active area would improve the performance of the OPV cells.

Role of Metal Cations in Alkali Metal Chloride Doped Graphene

The doping mechanism of graphene with chlorides of low work-function metals was investigated using NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2. After graphene was doped with 1.0 M dopants, the sheet resistance of the graphene increased from 780 Ω sq–1 to 1350–1620 Ω sq–1 after doping. Its transmittance at 550 nm also decreased from 97% to 90–94% owing to the presence of metal particles. The shift of G and 2D peaks in the Raman spectra coincided with n-type doping phenomena. The shift of the peak for the C═C bond to high binding energy and the decrease of the IC═C/IC—C intensity ratio in spectra acquired using synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES) provided further evidence of n-type doping. Furthermore, secondary cutoff spectra in SRPES showed that the work function of the doped graphene progressively decreased from 4.32 eV to 3.7, 3.66, 3.81, and 3.9 eV. The formation of interfacial dipole complexes between the oxidized functional group on graphene and metal cations with low work functions is considered to induce n-type doping, resulting in a decrease of both the conductivity and work function of the graphene sheet. Therefore, metal cations may play an important role in an alkali or alkaline metal chloride doping system.
