Fluorine's effect on fiber optical losses induced by drawing

Fiber optical losses approaching the ultimately low level are determined mainly by drawing conditions, in particular, by the three interconnected parameters of temperature, speed, and tension, and they also depend on the glass composition. For silica-germanium fibers it was found that germanium-induced losses (UV absorption and Rayleigh scattering) grow with higher temperatures and with lower drawing tensions.12 Yet, for fibers with a pure silica core and a fluorine-doped reflecting cladding the dependence was quite the opposite; namely, Rayleigh scattering grew with increasing drawing tension.3 We have investigated the influence of drawing conditions on the optical losses of silica-germanium fibers, the cores of which are additionally doped by fluorine, and we have shown the possibility of making the losses much less dependent on the drawing temperature and of reducing them to some extent, particularly for the fibers with the higher content of germanium.

Influence of fluorine doping on drawing-induced fibre losses

Reduction of drawing-induced losses in silica-germanium singlemode fibres with higher germanium content additionally doped by fluorine has been observed. The core doping by fluorine results in a lower loss and in the weakening of the optical loss dependence of the drawing temperature.

Low-loss, high-aperture germanium–fluorine-codoped single-mode fibers

High-aperture single-mode fibers with GeO2 concentrations of 10–30 mol. % have many applications; for example, they are used as dispersion-compensating fibers and as active fibers for signal amplification and they are a very attractive medium for various efficient nonlinear effects. However, to make best use of the advantages of highly doped fibers, the higher optical losses of such fibers should be minimized to improve their performance. In spite of several investigations, a satisfactory loss level in high-aperture fibers has not been reached to date and the mechanisms responsible for their excess losses are not yet clear.1–4

Broadband dispersion-compensating fiber for high-bit-rate transmission network use

The optimum refractive-index profile and drawing temperature were investigated so as to maximize the figure of merit for multicladding broadband dispersion-compensating fibers. Based on the results of the investigation, the authors have fabricated a highly bend-resistant fiber with a 92.6-ps/(nm dB) figure of merit using the modified chemical-vapor deposition method for dispersion compensation in the 1.5-1.6-µm wavelength region. The manufactured dispersion compensator does not suffer bend loss at 1.55 µm for curvatures of radia of 6.3 and 3.3 cm, and it has a 1.1-dB/km bend loss at a curvature of radius of 1.6 cm. Codoping the germanium silicate core with fluorine diminishes the optical loss down to 0.70 dB/km at a 1.55-µm wavelength.
