Bulk dense fine-grain (1−x)BiScO3–xPbTiO3 ceramics with high piezoelectric coefficient

High density fine grain (1−x)BiScO3–xPbTiO3 ceramics were successfully prepared by two-step sintering and their ferroelectric properties were investigated. Experimental evidence indicates the existence of a morphotropic phase boundary at the composition x=0.635, which exhibits a piezoelectric coefficient d33 of 700 pC/N at room temperature, significantly higher than the reported values to date. Furthermore, a higher electromechanical coupling factor Kp=0.632 and a larger remnant polarization Pr=47.3 μC/cm2 were obtained. The paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition occurs at 446 °C, slightly lower than in the coarse grain ceramics with a similar composition, suggesting a grain size effect. The local effective piezoelectric coefficient d33∗ was estimated to be 795 pC/N at 2.29 V, measured by scanning probe microscopy. Further atomic force microscope observation revealed the existence of 90° domains of about 60–70 nm in width, confirming the previous results that small domain structure enhances the piezoelectric properties.

Pressure tuned ferroelectric reentrance in nano-BaTiO3 ceramics

In nano-grain BaTiO3 ceramics, internal compressive stresses make the cubic phase more stable, while internal shear stresses stabilize rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases. The competition between internal compressive stresses and internal shear stresses gives a ferroelectric to paraelectric to ferroelectric reentrance phenomenon as a function of grain size. The pressure can be a tuning factor of reentrance behavior by controlling the interactions between external hydrostatic pressure and internal compressive stresses. These experimental phenomena can be well described by a modified Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire thermodynamic theory.

Template-based synthesis and magnetic properties of Mn-Zn ferrite nanotube and nanowire arrays

Template-based electrophoretic deposition of Mn-Zn ferrite nanotubes (NTs) and nanowires (NWs) were achieved using anodic alumina oxide (AAO) membranes. The effect of electrophoretic current and deposition time on the morphology of the tubes was investigated. The samples show cubic spinel structure with no preferred orientation. Room-temperature magnetic properties of the Mn-Zn ferrite NT/NW arrays were studied. The magnetic easy axis parallels the NT/NW’s channel axis attributing to the large shape anisotropy in this direction, especially for the NTs with a small wall thickness. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetostatic interactions were found dominant in the samples when applied field was perpendicular to the channel axis.

Preparation and Photoluminescence Properties of Eu³⁺‐Doped BaZrO₃ Nanotube Arrays

The BaZrO 3 : Eu hybrid nanotube arrays with different Eu 3+ ‐doped contents are synthesized by hydrothermal method using ZrO 2 nanotube layers as template. XRD , SEM , and TEM analysis reveal that the BaZrO 3 : Eu nanotubes have a cubic perovskite structure with uniform diameter (about 150 nm) and tubular wall. Photoluminescence property of the hybrid nanotube arrays are studied at room temperature. PL spectra, excited at 283 nm, consist of 4f→4f emission transitions from the 5 D 0 excited level of the Eu 3+ ions to the 7 F J (J = 0˜4) levels. The intense 5 D 0 – 7 F 0,2 transition suggests the local defects and distortion of EuO 6 octahedra in the BaZrO 3 : Eu host lattice. In addition, the dependence of luminescence intensity on the Eu 3+ concentration in the nanotube arrays is studied.
