Effect of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash Addition on the Iron Ore Sintering Process, Mineral Phase and Metallurgical Properties of Iron Ore Sinter

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is well known as hazardous waste, for promoting its harmless treatment and resource utilization, a new process was proposed by utilizing the iron ore sintering process employed massively in iron and steel industry. In this article, the feasibility of this process was estimated from the point of the effects of MSWI fly ash addition on the iron ore sintering process, sinter mineral phase structure and metallurgical properties through the sintering pot experiments, the reduction and melt-dropping experiments at different temperature. Results show that, for the sintering process, the flame front speed, the sinter productivity, the drum index and the yield of sinter decrease with the increasing of MSWI fly ash addition; for the sinter metallurgical properties, with the increasing of MSWI fly ash addition, the lower temperature reduction property (RDI) is improved obviously, the soft-dropping property is worsened; but the effect of MSWI fly ash addition on the middle temperature reduction property (RI) is not obvious; for the sinter mineral phase, the phase fraction of the silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) and the calcium silicate (CS) both increases with the increasing of MSWI fly ash addition. The complex of oxides, silicates and chlorides with lower melting point in the MSWI fly ash change the formation of sinter mineral phase and its composition essentially, which further effect the sintering process and the metallurgical properties.

Crystallization Kinetics Control Enabled by a Green Ionic Liquid Additive toward Efficient and Stable Carbon-Based Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells

Carbon-based mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (MPSCs) are becoming one of the most competitive photovoltaic technologies owing to their lower manufacturing cost and excellent stability. In this work, methylammonium acetate (MAAc), an ionic liquid additive, is added into methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI3) perovskite and is used to fabricate high-performance MPSCs. Systematic and detailed studies have shown that the MAAc interacts with PbI2 preferentially to form a MAPbI3-x(Ac)x intermediate phase that can effectively control the crystallization kinetics of MAPbI3 in the triple-mesoscopic layer. MAPbI3 films with an appropriate amount of MAAc exhibit higher crystallinity, lower defect density, and dense pore filling, which effectively reduce carrier non-radiative recombination loss in MPSCs. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.54% is obtained based on the optimized MAAc-engineered MPSCs. The PCE is 24% higher than 10.90% of the control devices. Moreover, unencapsulated MAAc-engineered MPSCs retain 90% of their initial PCE after being stored in the dark for 50 days under ambient atmosphere, which demonstrates much better air stability than control devices. This work provides an effective strategy for developing efficient and stable carbon-based MPSCs with an eco-friendly ionic liquid additive.

Electrochemical Performance and Mass Transfer Properties of Dual Electrode Assemblies for Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Recognizing the urgent need of further cost reduction to drive wider adoption of redox flow batteries, it is critical to improve the reactor performance, which has been regarded as a key approach to reduce the stack size as well as the high capital cost. As one of the main contributors to reactor internal resistance, porous electrodes with properly designed structure and optimized physio-chemical properties offer pathways for reduced voltage losses, including kinetic and concentration overpotentials. Recently, carbon cloth electrodes have been explored in flow battery applications owing to their bimodal pore size distributions, which opens a potential opportunity for improved mass transport behavior. The woven structure of cloth provides flexibility in the electrode designs through variation of the weave pattern, but finding a suitable trade-off between the electrolyte penetration pathways and abundant active surface area is still a challenge. In the present study, we investigate a dual-layer electrode configuration to simultaneously meet the requirements of high active surface area, low mass transfer resistance, and low pressure drop. A carbon cloth was placed close to the flow plate to serve as electrolyte distributor to ensure efficient mass transport in a lateral flow through configuration, while a carbon paper sub-layer was placed near the membrane to provide a high density of reaction sites. Two types of carbon cloth with different weave patterns and fiber bundle dimensions were investigated in combination with the carbon paper. To decouple the electrochemical losses and provide in-depth understanding of the performance gain, electrochemical measurements were conducted in a symmetric vanadium flow battery setup. Quantitative analysis of contributions from each type of polarization was conducted using both V2+/V3+ and VO2+/VO2+ redox couples. The Lattice Boltzmann Method was adopted based on the 3-D reconstructed electrode structure to provide insights into the electrolyte distribution and the electrolyte velocity profile within the dual-layer electrode assembly. Besides, we found that a single-layer carbon cloth electrode imprinted its woven pattern on the ion exchange membrane after battery assembly due to the unevenness of the surface. The sub-layer of carbon paper served as a protective layer to avoid excessive stretching and mechanical failure of the membrane and resulting increase of crossover induced capacity decay. Overall, the results showed that the investigated strategy is an effective way to achieve high electrochemical performance and low pressure drop. It can be regarded as a promising approach for high system efficiency while maintaining long-term stability in a flow-through configuration.

Effects of Particle Sizes of Active Materials and Conductive Additive on the Electrochemical Performance of a Semi-Solid Flow Battery

The semi-solid flow battery is one of the promising energy storage technologies in the future energy systems, especially for the applications that require high energy densities. Compared to the other redox flow batteries, the semi-solid flow battery provides a higher solubility of active material and relatively higher voltage window by employing the suspension of active lithium materials and conductive additive, which can offer around 5-20 times greater volumetric capacity. In this regard, its energy density is no longer limited by the solubility, but rather the allowed fraction of active lithium material solids in the flowable suspension. Some previous studies have attempted to optimize the proportion of active lithium material solids and conductive additive to balance the trade-off between the conductivity and viscosity of the suspension. However, few of them considered the influence of the particle sizes of the active lithium materials and conductive additive. Considering that the particle sizes can have significant impacts on the percolated conductive network and rheological properties of the electrolyte suspension, their effects on the performance of the semi-solid flow battery are explored in the present study. Specifically, different particle sizes of active lithium materials and conductive additive are prepared, respectively, based on the LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (LNCM)-based suspensions for the semi-solid flow battery. The resistance and electrochemical performance, as well as the rheological properties are investigated through single-cell experiments. Furthermore, the stabilities of the suspension with varying particle sizes are also investigated in the present study.

Synergistic Effect of Defect Passivation and Crystallization Control Enabled by Bifunctional Additives for Carbon-Based Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells

The emerging carbon-based mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (MPSCs) are known as one of the most promising candidates for photovoltaic applications thanks to their screen-printing process and excellent stability. Unfortunately, they usually suffer from serious defects because it is challenging to realize sufficient mesopore filling of the perovskite precursor solution throughout the triple-mesoporous scaffold. Herein, a bifunctional additive, biuret, endowed with both carbonyl and amino groups, was designed to realize a convenient fabrication approach for controllable crystallization of the precursor solution. Owing to the strong coordination ability with perovskite components, the incorporation of biuret can not only regulate crystallization kinetics allowing for the growth of high-quality perovskite crystals but also associate with uncoordinated ions for defect passivation to enhance the overall photovoltaic performance of MPSCs. A champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.42% with an enhanced short-circuit current density of 19.49 mA cm–2 and a much higher open-circuit voltage of 0.96 V was achieved for the device doped with 3 mol % biuret, which is 26% higher than that of the control device (10.66%). Moreover, the unencapsulated devices with biuret incorporation demonstrated superior stability, maintaining over 90% of the original PCE after 50 days of storage under ambient conditions. This work helps exploit bifunctional additive strategies for simultaneous defect passivation and crystallization control toward high-efficiency and long-term stability of carbon-based MPSCs.

Room‐Temperature‐Processed, Carbon‐Based Fully Printed Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells with 15% Efficiency

Methylamine (MA) and methylamine hydrochloride (MACl) are widely used to prepare highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, MA, as a gas, is difficult to handle and inevitably leads to a large amount of escape, and it is difficult to quantitatively calculate. Herein, selecting a mixture solvent of methylamine ethanol solution (MA‐EtOH sol) and acetonitrile (ACN) as a solvent, a new strategy for preparing fully printed mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (MPSCs) at room temperature is first proposed. With the introduction of 20 mol% MACl as additive, the fully printed MPSCs are fabricated without any posttreatment at room temperature via a one‐step drop‐coating method. As a consequence, the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.73 ± 0.3% (0.1 cm 2 ) with almost no hysteresis is achieved. Most importantly, the device also exhibits excellent long‐term stability when it is unencapsulated. Specifically, the unencapsulated device still retains nearly 100% of its original PCE after 64 days and 88% after 81 days of storage in the dark with a humidity of 50 ± 5% in an atmospheric environment. It provides a new idea for constructing fully printed MPSCs at room temperature in the future.
