Mechanical, wear and corrosion behaviours of laser additive manufactured iron-based heterogeneous composite coatings for tillage tools

Steel is commonly used in engineering components, and it has a high tendency to wear and corrosion attacks when exposed to unfavourable working conditions. The use of chromium-vanadium-iron-rich carbide reinforced iron-based hard facings has become more important in improving the corrosion and wear resistance of such steel subjected to abrasive and impact conditions. In this study, the chromium-vanadium-iron carbide reinforced coatings were developed using in-situ by depositing FeCrV15+Cr powder through laser cladding on carbon steel. The influence of the reinforcement on the microstructure of the coating in relation to its laser processing condition and extra chromium addition was investigated. Furthermore, the effect of the coating's reinforcement on the hardness, microstructures, anti-corrosion, and anti-wear properties of the carbon steel used in tillage and mining operations was investigated. The result is a defect free deposits with a solid metallurgical attachment to the substrate and improved microhardness. FeCrV15 deposits had a wear-resistant (with a wear rate of 2.42 × 10−6 mm3/N/m) and anti-corrosion capability (with a corrosion rate of 0.001869 mm/yr) that were several folds higher than the steel substrate (with wear rate of 1.72 × 10−3 mm3/N/m and corrosion rate of 0.1168 mm/yr). The general grain refinement of the FeCrV15 deposits was richly enhanced in the iron base matrix. This resulted in outstanding wear and corrosion resistance attributed to the better production of VC–Cr3C2–Cr7C3 particles and better grain refinement of the microstructural formation.

Abstract In this study, dispersion of tungsten carbide on AISI 304 stainless steel substrate has been carried out by laser melting of the sand blasted substrate using a 5 kW continuous wave (CW) Nd:YAG laser (with the beam diameter of 3 mm) with an output power ranging from 1.5–2 kW, and scan speed varying from 12 to 16 mm s −1 and simultaneous feeding of premixed WC + Co powders in the ratio (wt) of 1:4 (with a flow rate of 10 mg s −1 ). The microstructure of the composite zone is dendritic or cellular in morphology and consists of nano-tungsten carbide (both WC and W 2 C) and M 23 C 6 precipitates. There is an enhancement in hardness due to carbide dispersion from 220 VHN of the as-received substrate to 290–400 VHN. The wear resistance is improved significantly with a maximum enhancement observed in the sample processed with an applied power of 2 kW and a scan speed of 12 mm s −1 . The corrosion rate in a 3.56 wt% NaCl solution is significantly reduced due to laser processing in most samples except when processed with 2.5 kW applied power and 12 mm s −1 scan speed. However, pitting corrosion resistance is found to be improved (shifting of E pit towards noble direction) for the sample processed with an applied power of 2 kW and a scan speed of 12 mm s −1 .

Abstract Laser cladding is an additive manufacturing technology that can be utilized in surface strengthening, modification, and repair of components that are subjected to adverse working conditions. This can be accomplished by the addition of functionally graded material with a remarkable limit to enhancing an engaged credited property of monolithic material that is superior and better than its monolithic counterparts. Chromium addition to the microstructure of components has been found to increase the electrochemical stability, high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance of laser additive manufactured components. The current study investigates the effect of the extra addition of chromium on the hardness and microstructure of laser coated high carbon ferrochrome FeCrV15 on steel baseplate.

Studies on laser surface processing of titanium based alloy (Ti6Al4V) with titanium, carbon and a mixture of titanium and carbon

Abstract The present study concerns the development of titanium carbide (TiC) dispersed titanium matrix composite by laser surface processing of titanium with titanium and carbon (in the weight ratio of 90:10 and 50:50). Laser surface processing has been carried out using a 4 kW continuous wave (CW) Nd:YAG laser with a beam diameter of 2 mm, at varied applied power ranging from 600–900 W and a scan speed of 0.6 m s −1 by pre-deposition of precursor powder and its subsequent melting using laser in argon shroud. Followed by laser surface processing, a detailed characterization of the processed zone has been carried out in terms of microstructure, phase, and composition. Properties of the surface processed zone were evaluated in terms of corrosion resistance in Hank’s solution. Finally, the optimum process parameters for laser surface processing has been established through a detailed structure–property-process parameters correlation. The microstructure of the surface processed zone consists of presence of titanium carbides dispersed in α matrix, the mass fraction of carbide phase was found to vary with weight percentage of graphite present in the precursor powder. The corrosion resistance property of the surface was found to be improved in terms of decrease in corrosion rate (range of 0.001 mm to 0.03 mm per year) as compared to as-received Ti-6Al-4V (0.2 mm per year). Laser surface processing with 100% graphite shows a maximum improvement in corrosion and bio-activity.

Laser Additive Manufacturing in Surface Modification of Metals

Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers lots of advantages when compared to other manufacturing processes, such as high flexibility and ability to produce complex parts directly from the Three Dimensional (3D) Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model. Producing highly complex parts using traditional manufacturing processes is difficult, and it requires it to be broken down into smaller parts, which consumes lots of materials and time. If this part needs to have a surface with improved property or a surface made of composite materials, it has to be done by employing another manufacturing process after the parts are completed. AM, on the other hand, has the ability to produce parts with the required surface property in a single manufacturing run. Out of all the AM technologies, Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) is the most commonly used technique, especially for metal processing. LAM uses the coherent and collimated properties of the laser beam to fuse, melt, or cut materials according to the profile generated from the CAD image of the part being made. Some of the LAM techniques and their mode of operations are highlighted in this chapter. The capabilities of using LAM for surface modification of metals are also presented in this chapter. A specific example is given as a case study for the surface modification of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) with Ti6Al4V/TiC composite using laser material deposition process – an important LAM technology. Ti6Al4V is an important aerospace alloy, and it is also used as medical implants because of its corrosion resistance property and its biocompatibility.
