Polyinosinic-Cytidylic Acid Complex (Poly I:G) and Viral Infections in Mice

Poly I:C, the double-stranded complex of polyinosinic and polycytidylic acids, was tested for activity in mice against infections produced by Columbia SK virus and viruses of clinical importance. Poly I:C had high activity against the SK virus. It had marginal activity, and only when given intranasally, against strains of influenza virus belonging to types A, A1, A2 and B. It was active against infections produced by parainfluenza 1 virus, vaccinia virus, and herpes simplex virus. It was inactive against Coxsackie A21 and B1 virus.

Newborn sickle cell disease screening: the Jamaican experience (1995–2006)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the existing newborn sickle haemoglobinopathy screening programme in Jamaica.A retrospective analysis of infants screened during the period 8 November 1995 to 22 July 2006 was performed. Patient data for analyses was restricted to patients with homozygous (Hb SS) sickle cell disease. Published data from the Jamaican Sickle Cell Cohort Study was used to make comparisons with the study sample.The study sample consisted of 435 patients with Hb SS disease. Acute chest syndrome was the most common clinical (non-death) event accounting for approximately 50% of all events. Acute splenic sequestration, no longer a significant cause of mortality, was responsible for approximately 32% of clinical events. Seven deaths (1.8%) occurred during the study period compared with 17.6% to the same age in the Jamaican Sickle Cell Cohort Study. There was a lower proportion of hospital admissions and episodes of serious illness in the study group compared with controls.Survival estimates for the study sample showed improvement compared with the Jamaican Sickle Cell Cohort Study. This study continues to demonstrate the benefits of, and as such shows support for, newborn screening and early interventions in sickle cell disease. In addition, it highlights some of the areas for continued focus and research development. Although the current system is providing an essential and beneficial service, the study emphasizes the need for newborn screening programmes to be comprehensive care systems to be fully effective.

Haemoglobin gene frequencies in the Jamaican population: a study in 100,000 newborns

S ummary . The gene frequencies of abnormal haemoglobins have been determined in a group of 100 000 Jamaican newborns screened over a period of 8½ years. The population is predominantly of West African origin and the survey represents approximately one quarter of all island deliveries within the period of the study. The common β globin chain abnormalities β S and β c occurred with gene frequencies of 0.055 and 0.019 respectively; β thalassaemia was relatively rare. In contrast, α thalassaemia was quite common, occurring with a gene frequency of 0.183. In addition to these common abnormalities, the frequencies of 256 rare abnormal haemoglobins are described. This survey thus represents a complete and accurate documentation of the α and β globin variants that occur in the Jamaican population.

Screening Cord Bloods for Detection of Sickle Cell Disease in Jamaica

Abstract A cord-blood screening program, designed primarily for detecting sickle cell disease, has been in operation for seven months (8000 samples) at a large maternity unit in Kingston, Jamaica. We describe techniques of cord-blood collection and electrophoretic investigation on both cellulose acetate and agar gel. These methods appear to give rapid, valid results at minimal expense and are well adapted to screening large populations.

Non-gouty arthritis in sickle cell disease: report of 37 consecutive cases.

Arthritis in association with sickle cell disease was seen in 37 patients in a 21/2-year period. Cases of gout and of avascular necrosis of the femoral head were excluded. In 12 patients a non-inflammatory effusion occurred during the course of a painful crisis, in 12 patients an ankle effusion occurred in association with spontaneous development or deterioration of leg ulceration, and in 13 patients there was a group of miscellaneous arthritides. Ankle arthritis with leg ulceration has not been previously recognised, and its association with spontaneous ulceration, which is presumed to have a vaso-occlusive origin, is compatible with ischaemic synovial damage. The aetiology may therefore be similar to that believed to account for effusions in association with the painful crisis.
