Excessive and Disproportionate Use of Chemicals Cause Soil Contamination and Nutritional Stress

Incredible achievements have been made in agricultural production worldwide, but many daunting challenges remain unresolved to ensure food security and environmental sustainability. Chemical fertilisers are used in excessive and disproportionate quantities to raise crop yields in order to combat certain circumstances. However, apart from being processed in crop plants, chemical fertilisers above the threshold level pollute the atmosphere. As the availability of nutrients becomes a constraint of plant growth and production, sustained crop productivity relies on constant renewal. To increase agriculture production and maintain soil fertility, the application of chemical fertilisers is indispensable. However, insufficient or unnecessary application of fertiliser does not guarantee consistently growing yields, which can result in low efficiency of nutrient usage. Today, the key goals are the study of the effective use of chemicals, the reduction of production costs and the efficient use of fertilisation.

Bioprospection of Plants for Essential Mineral Micronutrients

Since ancient times plants have been the source of essential mineral micronutrients for living beings. However, limited quantity and presence of inhibitors makes their bioavailability a severe problem.For essential mineral micronutrients such as iron and zinc are limiting in diets and need improvementstrategies for the optimum intake of each nutrient.It is imperative that crops with nutrient-enhanced traits develop to overcome this problem.The advancement in genomics providesnew integrative approaches to enhance mineral micronutrient content in plants. Crop biofortification enhance nutritional quality to battle nutrient shortages by increasing the levels of nutrient components.When synthesizing different micronutrients, phytonutrients, and/or bioactive components in crops, plant metabolic engineering and synthetic biology approaches are much more efficient and reliable compared to agronomic methods and traditional plant breeding.However, research to enhance plant nutritional quality has been constrained by lack of basic knowledge of plant metabolism and consequentlyrequiredissection of whole branches of plant metabolism. Increasing our basic plant system knowledge over the next few decades would be truly unprecedented and will allow plant researchers to adjust the nutritional content of major crops to ensure optimal nutrients and improve various aspects of human health.

Objective Quality Assessment of 2D Synthesized Views for Light-Field Visualization

Super multi-view light-field displays provide glasses-free immersive 3D experience via continuous motion parallax. Such displays, particularly large ones, require input views acquired at high angular resolution, covering a large field of view. Light-field content can be captured or generated by several different tools and methods, such as the turntable arrangement for a single camera, arc, linear and grid arrangements of multiple cameras, light-field cameras and also virtual cameras. However, acquiring content with a large number of real cameras is often economically and technologically prohibitive. Interpolating intermediate views from those captured using sparse camera arrays has been suggested to achieve the required high view density. Such synthesized views suffer from several artifacts, which can severely affect the perceived quality. Objective quality assessment of synthesized images has been studied extensively on a per-image basis. Yet, when such content is visualized on a light-field display, the objective quality of the content may not be derived from the quality of the individual images. In this paper, we present a pilot study where we investigated degradations in the objective quality of 2D synthesized views while increasing the proportion of synthesized views in the multi-view content.
