How to Solve Materials and Design Problems in Solar Heating and Cooling

This book discusses the solving of materials and design problems in solar heating and cooling. Based on two studies - one for ASHRAE and the US Dept. of Energy, and one for Argonne National Laboratory, the book consolidates a large body of information on difficulties encountered in the design, installation, operation, testing, and maintenance of solar heating and cooling systems. A broad range of difficulties encountered in active and passive solar space heating systems and active solar space cooling systems is covered. The problems include design errors, installation mistakes, inadequate durability of materials, unacceptable reliability of components, and wide variations in performance and operation of different solar systems. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 is a summary of feedback from designers and manufacturers involved in the solar market. It presents, first, the designers experiences with, and criticisms of, solar components and, then, the manufacturers replies to the various problems encountered. Part II provides information on the performance and operation of solar heating and cooling systems so as to enable future designs to maximize performance and eliminate costly errors.

Enhanced β‐galactosidase production by supplementing whey with cauliflower waste

Summary Among the five Kluyveromyces marxianus strains tested for β‐galactosidase production, K. marxianus NCIM 3465 showed maximum enzyme activity of 1.62 IU mg −1 dry weight. Different levels (5–25%, w/v) of dried cauliflower waste were incorporated into whey to evaluate the effect of its supplementation on enzyme production. Although a marginal increase in enzyme production was seen by incorporating 5% and 10% cauliflower waste in whey, nearly 15% increase in β‐galactosidase production was observed when cauliflower waste level was increased to 20% compared with whey alone. Supplementing whey with 20% cauliflower waste also decreased the production time. Lactose concentration in whey, mainly responsible for increasing the biological oxygen demand load of the effluent water, decreased from 4.2% to nearly 0% at 24 h. Thus, this study demonstrated that both these by‐products/residues could be effectively used for β‐galactosidase production at commercial scale.

Basella- an Underutilized Green Leafy Vegetable with a Potential for Functional Food Development

Basella alba is an underutilized green leafy vegetable predominantly grown in the Asian subcontinent. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, phenols, and antioxidants. Ferulic acid, gallic acid, caffeic acid, lutein, zeaxanthin, and β-carotene are the major bioactive compounds present in B. alba. However, their potential as ingredients for development of functional foods has not been fully explored. Extraction and encapsulation of bioactive compounds from Basella alba will help in their incorporation into foods imparting functionality to the developed foods. Therefore, it is important to explore the potential of B. alba as functional food perse or as an ingredient in various processed food products for imparting functional attributes to such products. This review, therefore aims to identify the bioactive compounds present in Basella, in addition to evaluating the nutritional and therapeutic properties of this vegetable and also appraise different methods for extraction and encapsulation of bioactive compounds present in it.
