The effects of increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations-such as changes in ocean chemistry-will adversely affect the physical and biological characteristics of coastal systems, modifying their ecosystem structure and functioning. As a result, coastal nations face losses of marine biodiversity, fisheries, and shorelines. Coral reefs, which are among the most bio diverse ecosystems on Earth, are highly sensitive to increases in sea surface temperature. A 2°C increase, associated with CO2 concentrations of 500 ppm, threatens to destroy most coral reefs. Along with increasing temperatures, more acidic conditions in the ocean associated with dissolved CO2 from Earth’s atmosphere threaten to transform living reefs into seaweed dominated mounds of rubble. These impacts will add to the stress already resulting from local anthropogenic effects; combined, they represent an unprecedented challenge to the global biosphere. While the impacts are being felt globally, some regions will be more acutely affected than others.

Evaluation of haematological properties of normal Albino rats exposed to ethanolic extract of Hydrilla verticillata (L.F.) Royle collected from unpolluted and polluted water sources

Present study was undertaken to investigate the haematological properties of whole plant ethanol extract of Hydrilla verticillata collected from polluted and unpolluted areas. The results showed that as days increased, (21 st days), the RBC counts increased by ethanol extracts of H. verticillata from unpolluted than the sample from polluted water. The RBC counts in induced and standard condition are lower than the plant samples from unpolluted water sample. A significant decrease in the level of WBC was observed in induced and standard conditions. Regarding the platelets counts, increased condition was reported in ethanol extract of H. verticillata from unpolluted plant samples.

Diversity of the family Convolvulaceae in Tripura district

One of the grand tasks of current taxonomy is to prepare a checklist of plants of the globe. This paper is based on the collection of angiosperm flora in family Convolvulaceae in particular between 2014 and 2015. The present paper reports 35 species under 9 genera of Convolvulaceae from Tripura district. Ipomoea is the largest genus with 18 species followed by Merremia with 4 species, Convolvulus and Argyreia with 3 species of the family Convolvulaceae. The family comprises annual and perennial, prostrate, twinning and trailing herbs. Moreover, 6 taxa were found to be shrubs.

Climbing plants are one of the most interesting group but a much neglected group of plants. But, they also play a part in historical importance of our ancient buildings which owe their attraction to the green veil which covers up their architectural or structural defects making them assume perfect beauty in our eyes. The present survey reveals that angiospermic climbers of the study area are represented by 94 species under 63 genera belonging to 32 families. Among all families, Convolvulaceae, Papilionaceae (7 species) and Vitaceae are the most dominating family species as well as genera wise. The dominant families are Convolvulaceae, Papilionaceae, Vitaceae, Apocynaceae, Menispermaceae and Oleaceae. The most abundant liana species include the thorny stragglers Pterolobium hexapetalun (Caesalpiniaceae), Lantana camara (Verbenaceae), and the twiners Jasminum angustifolium (Oleaceae), Gymnena sylvestre (Asclepiadaceae) and Aganosmacymosavar. cymosa (Apocynaceae). The enumerated climbing modes were classified into woody vines, the lianas (75) and herbaceous vines (19). Six climbing modes of lianas were recognized as stem twiners (37) followed by stragglers-unarmed (28), stragglers unarmed (10), tendril climbers (17), root climbers (1) and hook climber (1).

Herbaceous species diversity in Veerani Aloor, Kanyakumari district, Tamilnadu, South India

Herbaceous plant species are important components of ecosystems. Herbs are variable in their presence as well as presence of certain chemical compounds in their body system. Floristic studies acquire increasing importance in recent years in response to the need of developing and understand and under developing countries to assess their plant wealth. Total 54 plant species belonging to 20 families and 48 genera were recorded from the study site. Out of 54 plants, 54 were angiosperms. The contribution of dicotyledons was 98% and monocotyledons 2%. Acanthaceae was the most dominant family with 6 species and 6 genera and other main contributing families were Amaranthaceae (7 species and 6 genera), Euphorbiaceae (6 species and 4 genera), Apocynaceae (5 species and 5 genera), Capparaceae (3 species and 3 genera) and Malvaceae (3 species and 3 genera). The most dominant life from was wild (87%) followed by ornamental (12%) and cultivation (2%). The dominance of plants from Poaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Apocynaceae families in the study site, supports the harsh environmental conditions especially the water stress, because these plants have made morphological, anatomical and a physiological modifications to overcome the drought conditions. Dominance of Papilionaceae shows that these areas are nutrient deficient especially nitrogen.

Folk medicine is one of the natural health care systems that have been practiced by all human cultures from the beginning of civilization.Biodiversity current in each area additionally plays an inevitable function in the improvement of such healthcare practices.Kanyakumari district, the southernmost part of India is also blessed with one of the most luxuriant flowers and its variety, its indigenous humans have found to make use of this wealthy biodiversity to meet their healthcare needs for the millennia.The collected medicinal plants were identified for their local medicinal uses through interviews with local healers, and medicinal plant collectors.The present paper deals with 47 plants belonging to 32 families used by the local healers, and traditional practitioners of the thengapatanam region, of the Kanyakumari district for the treatment of various diseases.For each species botanical name, family, local name, parts used, and method of preparation have been recorded.The medicinal plants have rich therapeutical values and economically value of plants has been present in the area.

BIOREMEDIATION - AN OVERVIEW

Bioremediation is an ecologically sound and state of the art technique that employs natural biological processes to completely eliminate toxic contaminants. Any process that uses micro organisms, fungi, green plants or their enzymes to return the natural environment altered by contaminants to its original condition. Bioremediation technologies can be generally classified as in situ or ex situ. In situ bioremediation involves treating the contaminated material at the site while ex situ involves the removal of the contaminated material to be treated elsewhere. Some examples of bioremediation technologies are bioventing, landfarming, bioreactor, compositing, bioaugmentation, rhizofiltration, and bio-stimulaiton. Micro organism which perform the function of bioremediation is known as Bioremediators. (bioaugmentation). Not all contaminants, however, are easily treated by bioremediation using microorganisms. For example, heavy metals such as cadmium and lead are not readily absorbed or captured by organisms. the assimilation of metals such as mercury into the food chain may worsen matters. This paper gives an idea of what is bioremediation, principles of bioremediation, factors of bioremediation, strategies, types, genetic engineering approaches, monitoring bioremediation and advantages or disadvantages of bioremediation.
