Fundamental Limits to Nonlinear Energy Harvesting

Ease of miniaturization, and less or no maintenance, among other advantages, have pushed towards replacement of conventional batteries with energy harvesters in particular, vibratory energy harvesters. In the recent years, nonlinearity has been intentionally introduced into the otherwise linear energy harvesters in the hope of increasing the frequency bandwidth and power density. However, fundamental limits on the harvestable energy of a harvester subjected to an arbitrary excitation force is yet unknown. Understanding of these limits is not only essential for assessment of the technology potential, but also provides a broader prospective on the current harvesting mechanisms and guidance in their improvement. Here we derive the fundamental limits on output power of an ideal energy harvester, and develop an analysis framework for simple computation of this limit for more sophisticated set-ups. We show that the optimal harvester maximizes the harvested energy through a mechanical analogue of 'buy low-sell high' strategy. Inspired by this strategy we propose a novel concept of latch-assisted harvesting that is shown to harvest energy more efficiently than its linear and bistable counterparts over a wider range of excitation frequencies and amplitudes.

Voltage Multistability and Pulse Emergency Control for Distribution System with Power Flow Reversal

High levels of penetration of distributed generation and aggressive reactive power compensation may result in the reversal of power flows in future distribution grids. The voltage stability of these operating conditions may be very different from the more traditional power consumption regime. This paper focused on demonstration of multistability phenomenon in radial distribution systems with reversed power flow, where multiple stable equilibria co-exist at the given set of parameters. The system may experience transitions between different equilibria after being subjected to disturbances such as short-term losses of distributed generation or transient faults. Convergence to an undesirable equilibrium places the system in an emergency or \textit{in extremis} state. Traditional emergency control schemes are not capable of restoring the system if it gets entrapped in one of the low voltage equilibria. Moreover, undervoltage load shedding may have a reverse action on the system and can induce voltage collapse. We propose a novel pulse emergency control strategy that restores the system to the normal state without any interruption of power delivery. The results are validated with dynamic simulations of IEEE $13$-bus feeder performed with SystemModeler software. The dynamic models can be also used for characterization of the solution branches via a novel approach so-called the admittance homotopy power flow method.

Decentralized stability rules for microgrids

Stability certification of microgrids can be challenging due to the lack of information on exact values of system parameters. Moreover, full-scale direct stability analysis for every system configuration can be economically and technically unjustified. There exist a demand for simple conditions imposed on system components that guarantee the whole system stability under arbitrary interconnections. Most of existing methods are relying on the so-called passivity property which can be difficult to realize by all the system components simultaneously. In the present manuscript we develop an approach for certifying the system stability by separately considering its properties in different regions of frequency domain. We illustrate our method on the case of droop-controlled inverters and show that while these inverters can never be made passive, reasonable stability certificates can be formulated by careful consideration of their input admittance for different frequency regions. We discuss the generalization of the method for different types of microgrid components.

Options for Control of Reactive Power by Distributed Photovoltaic Generators

High-penetration levels of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation on an electrical distribution circuit present several challenges and opportunities for distribution utilities. Rapidly varying irradiance conditions may cause voltage sags and swells that cannot be compensated by slowly responding utility equipment resulting in a degradation of power quality. Although not permitted under current standards for interconnection of distributed generation, fast-reacting, VAR-capable PV inverters may provide the necessary reactive power injection or consumption to maintain voltage regulation under difficult transient conditions. As side benefit, the control of reactive power injection at each PV inverter provides an opportunity and a new tool for distribution utilities to optimize the performance of distribution circuits, e.g., by minimizing thermal losses. We discuss and compare via simulation various design options for control systems to manage the reactive power generated by these inverters. An important design decision that weighs on the speed and quality of communication required is whether the control should be centralized or distributed (i.e., local). In general, we find that local control schemes are able to maintain voltage within acceptable bounds. We consider the benefits of choosing different local variables on which to control and how the control system can be continuously tuned between robust voltage control, suitable for daytime operation when circuit conditions can change rapidly, and loss minimization better suited for nighttime operation.

Statistics of voltage drop in distribution circuits: a dynamic programming approach

We analyze a power distribution line with high penetration of distributed generation and strong variations of power consumption and generation levels. In the presence of uncertainty the statistical description of the system is required to assess the risks of power outages. In order to find the probability of exceeding the constraints for voltage levels we introduce the probability distribution of maximal voltage drop and propose an algorithm for finding this distribution. The algorithm is based on the assumption of random but statistically independent distribution of loads on buses. Linear complexity in the number of buses is achieved through the dynamic programming technique. We illustrate the performance of the algorithm by analyzing a simple 4-bus system with high variations of load levels.

Using Effective Generator Impedance for Forced Oscillation Source Location

Locating the sources of forced low-frequency oscillations in power systems is an important problem. A number of proposed methods demonstrate their practical usefulness, but many of them rely on strong modeling assumptions and provide poor performance in certain cases for reasons still not well understood. This paper proposes a systematic method for locating the source of a forced oscillation by considering a generator's response to fluctuations of its terminal voltages and currents. It is shown that a generator can be represented as an effective admittance matrix with respect to low-frequency oscillations, and an explicit form for this matrix, for various generator models, is derived. Furthermore, it is shown that a source generator, in addition to its effective admittance, is characterized by the presence of an effective current source thus giving a natural qualitative distinction between source and nonsource generators. Detailed descriptions are given of a source detection procedure based on this developed representation, and the method's effectiveness is confirmed by simulations on the recommended testbeds (eg. WECC 179-bus system). This method is free of strong modeling assumptions and is also shown to be robust in the presence of measurement noise and generator parameter uncertainty.
