Humidity Sensor Based on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Thin Films

The properties of the humidity sensors made of chemically treated and untreated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) thin films are investigated systematically. It shows that both the chemically treated and untreated MWCNT thin films demonstrate humidity sensitive properties, but the former have stronger sensitivity than the latter. In the range of 11%–98% relative humidity (RH), the resistances of the chemically treated and untreated MWCNT humidity sensors increase 120% and 28%, respectively. Moreover, the treated humidity sensors showed higher sensitivity and better stability. In addition, the response and recover properties, and stabilization of the humidity sensors are measured, and the humidity sensitive mechanisms of the sensors are analyzed. The humidity sensitivity of carbon nanotube thin films indicates it promise as a kind of humidity sensitive material.

Design of High-Barrier and Environmentally Degradable FDCA-Based Copolyesters: Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

The 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA)-based aliphatic–aromatic copolyester is an intensively researched area of bio-based polymers with high gas barrier and mechanical properties. However, the contradiction between the barrier and degradation performance still remains a huge challenge and severely limits their applications. Here, we combine branched neopentyl glycol, hydrophilic diglycolic acid, and FDCA to prepare poly(neopentyl glycol diglycolate/furandicarboxylate) (PNDF) copolyesters. With poor crystallization capability, PNDF40 and 50 (content of NF units) display low modulus (58 vs 108 MPa) but elastomeric behavior. Their tensile broken samples can even rapidly restore the original length, which might be derived from the physical crosslinking networks. It was interesting to find that even when more than 50% of the NF units were replaced by ND units, the PNDF copolyesters still retained high gas barrier. The introduction of diglycolic acid improved the hydrolysis rate, showing potential degradability under environmental conditions. However, enzymatic degradation using Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) revealed that the branched neopentyl glycol decreased the biodegradation rate when compared with other linear diols. Furthermore, the hydrolytic pathway of PNDF was explored by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Through Fukui function analysis, we identified the most active sites of PNDF for hydrolysis. Additionally, the calculated energy barrier indicated that hydrolysis of the polymer chain became easier with the increase in the number of ND units. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of PNDF–CALB illustrated that Val154 and Gln157 of CALB located at catalytic entrance formed noncovalent interaction with PNDF, which would sterically hinder the carbonyl carbon from reaching an ideal distance for nucleophilic attack and decrease the tendency to enter a pre-reaction state.

A High Performance Copolyester with “Locked” Biodegradability: Solid Stability and Controlled Degradation Enabled by Acid-Labile Acetal

The gradual degradation of polyester in daily use causes unpredictable failure and restricts its reliable applications. The realization of excellent stability in use and controlled degradation in a specific environment is highly appreciated but still remains challengeable. Here, we demonstrate a new solution via introducing acetal units into poly(butylene succinate): "locking" the biodegradation of copolyesters by rigid spiro diacetal, which could be "unlocked" in strong acidic circumstances. In detail, a series of poly(butylene succinate-co-spirocyclic succinate) (PBSS) copolyesters containing different contents of spiroglycol (SPG) were prepared and characterized. Among them PBSS65 behaved as an excellent candidate for future application, which possessed a high elastic modulus (1.87 GPa) and tensile strength (46 MPa) and moderate elongation at break (252%). It kept stable after melt processing and pH 0–14 soaking, showing solid reliability in daily use. Its biodegradation was locked by the steric hindrance effect of SPG units. Only after treatment in acetone/H2O mixed acidic solution could the biodegradation be triggered. Moreover, it was found that the prolongation of the acid treatment time could accelerate the biodegradation process. The controlled degradation mechanism was proposed to be consisted of acid cleavage of SPG unit and enzymatic degradation of ester group.

Treatment of multiwall carbon nanotubes based on the modified Hummers method for supercapacitor electrode materials

An effective treatment based on the modified Hummers method was initially used to improve the electrochemical properties of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this study, the MWNTs were treated through this modified method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM findings showed that part of the nanotubes exhibited a two-dimensional structure similar to that of the graphene sheets. The –COOH content in the MWNTs treated through the modified Hummers method in accordance with the Boehm method was 8.2%. This result indicates that the modified method can convert the hydrophobic surface of the MWNTs into a hydrophilic surface. Moreover, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurements suggest that the specific surface area and mesoporous volume were increased. The maximum specific capacitance of the MWNTs treated with the modified Hummers method was 179 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1; this value reflected an increase of 371% in comparison with that of MWNT electrodes treated with nitric acid (38 F g−1). Therefore, the modified Hummers method is believed to be a good prospect for improving the electrochemical performance of the MWNT supercapacitors.

Efficient Separation of Silicon and Vanadium by Sodium Roasting-Water Leaching from Vanadium Slag and CaV2O6 Preparation

Calcium vanadate (CaV2O6), a new product of vanadium precipitation, was obtained from vanadium slag by sodium roasting-water leaching and calcium precipitation. The separation behavior of vanadium and silicon in vanadium slag during sodium roasting and water leaching was systematically studied, and micro-morphology and valence migration behavior of vanadium and Fe in vanadium slag, roasting slag, and residue were revealed. The Na2CO3 was added to the vanadium slag at 20% mass fraction, roasted at 790 °C, and kept for 120 min, the roasted sample was added to the deionized aqueous solution with a liquid-solid ratio of (L/S) 5mL/g, and then heated at 90 °C for 60 min, 89.54% vanadium and 1.96% chromium were extracted. Sodium carbonate tends to combine with vanadium to form sodium vanadate, while silicon is easy to combine with Fe and Na to form acmite (NaFeSi2O6). When the molar ratio of N (Ca/V) is 0.6 and CaO, is added to adjust the pH of vanadium leaching solution to 6.7 ± 0.1 and precipitate 90 min at 90 °C, vanadium is precipitated in the form of CaV2O6 with a purity of 95.69%, under these conditions, the precipitation ratio is 95.03%.
