Anticoagulation-related nephropathy (ARN) is an uncommon diagnosis that should be considered in patients presenting with unexplained acute kidney injury (AKI) and coagulopathy. In this article, we present the case of a 70-year-old male with a history of cirrhosis and portal vein thrombosis on Coumadin who presented to the hospital with gross hematuria. The patient was diagnosed with AKI on chronic kidney disease (CKD) secondary to ARN superimposed on sclerosing IgA nephropathy. ARN, also known as warfarin-associated nephropathy, is an uncommon condition in which AKI from glomerular hemorrhage develops in a patient with an international normalized ratio greater than 3. The most common risk factor for development of ARN is CKD. AKI in our patient unearthed preexisting CKD due to IgA nephropathy as evidenced by the biopsy.

The discovery of superconductivity in square-planar low valence nickelates has ignited a vigorous debate regarding their essential electronic properties: Do these materials have appreciable oxygen charge-transfer character akin to the cuprates, or are they in a distinct Mott-Hubbard regime where oxygen plays a minimal role? Here, we resolve this question using O $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of the low valence nickelate La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$ and a prototypical cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.35$). As expected, the cuprate lies deep in the charge-transfer regime of the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme. The nickelate, however, is not well described by either limit of the ZSA scheme and is found to be of mixed charge-transfer/Mott-Hubbard character with the Coulomb repulsion $U$ of similar size to the charge-transfer energy $\Delta$. Nevertheless, the transition-metal-oxygen hopping is larger in La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$ than in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, leading to a significant superexchange interaction and an appreciable hole occupation of the ligand O orbitals in La$_{4}$Ni$_{3}$O$_{8}$ despite its larger $\Delta$. Our results clarify the essential characteristics of low valence nickelates and put strong constraints on theoretical interpretations of superconductivity in these materials.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of incorporating fermented feed into the daily diet on the slaughter performance, meat quality, and flavor compounds of cage-raised chicken. The control group (CK) of the Guangxi Partridge chicken was provided a standard base diet (CK), which was supplemented with 10% fermented banana peel (Pe-10), 20% fermented banana peel (Pe-20), 10% fermented banana pulp residue (Pu-10) and 20% fermented banana pulp residue (Pu-20). The slaughter performance, meat quality, and flavor compounds in the meat samples of the chicken in these groups were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the chicken in Pe-10, Pe-20, Pu-10, and Pu-20 had pectoral muscle percentages, thigh muscle percentages, and total fatty acid content of the chest meat in the Pe-10, Pe-20, Pu-10, and Pu-20 groups were higher than that observed in the CK group. The moisture content, meat color, carcass weight, total net weight, and abdominal fat percentage of the meat samples in these experimental groups exhibited no notable differences. The flavor compounds in the meat samples of the chicken fed with the two concentrations of fermented banana peel and banana pulp residue exhibited notable differences from those in the control group. An increase in the quantity of fermented banana peel incorporated into the daily diet from 10% to 20% resulted in a notable alteration in the flavor profile of the chest meat samples. In conclusion, the inclusion of varying proportions of fermented banana peels and dregs in the diet has been demonstrated to enhance both the slaughter performance and the quality of the chicken, while also influencing the flavor profile.
Bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs) used in clinics are fabricated via glutaraldehyde (GLUT) crosslinking, which results in cytotoxicity and causes eventual valve calcification after implantation into the human body; therefore, the average lifetime and application of BHVs are limited. To address these issues, the most commonly used method is modification with amino acids, such as glycine (GLY), which is proven to effectively reduce toxicity and calcification. In this study, we used the l-glutathione (GSH) in a new modification treatment based on GLUT-crosslinked bovine pericardium (BP) as the GLUT + GSH group, BPs crosslinked with GLUT as GLUT-BP (control group), and GLY modification based on GLUT-BP as the GLUT + GLY group. We evaluated the characteristics of BPs in different treatment groups in terms of biomechanical properties, cell compatibility, aldehyde group content detection, and the calcification content. Aldehyde group detection tests showed that the GSH can completely neutralize the residual aldehyde group of GLUT-BP. Compared with that of GLUT-BP, the endothelial cell proliferation rate of the GLUT + GSH group increased, while its hemolysis rate and the inflammatory response after implantation into the SD rat were reduced. The results show that GSH can effectively improve the cytocompatibility of the GLUT-BP tissue. In addition, the results of the uniaxial tensile test, thermal shrinkage temperature, histological and SEM evaluation, and enzyme digestion experiments proved that GSH did not affect the ECM stability and biomechanics of the GLUT-BP. The calcification level of GLUT-BP modified using GSH technology decreased by 80%, indicating that GSH can improve the anti-calcification performance of GLUT-BP. Compared with GLUT-GLY, GLUT + GSH yielded a higher cell proliferation rate and lower inflammatory response and calcification level. GSH can be used as a new type of anti-calcification agent in GLUT crosslinking biomaterials and is expected to expand the application domain for BHVs in the future.
To study the relationship between impulsivity and sleep disorders in children.A total of 1 736 children at ages of 6 to 12 years were randomly sampled from five districts of Changsha. Their parents completed the questionnaires about children's sleep conditions and behaviors (using Barratt Impulsiveness Scale 11th version).Five hundred and fifty-four children (31.9%) had sleep disorders. The incidence of sleep disorders in boys was significantly higher than that in girls (35.4% vs 28.3%; P<0.01). The scores of attentional, motor, and non-planning impulsiveness factors as well as the total score of Barratt Impulsiveness Scale in children with sleep disorders were significantly higher than those in children without (P<0.01). The incidence of daytime sleepiness (35.9%) in children with sleep disorders was significantly higher than that in children without (24.7%; P<0.01). The scores of attentional, motor, and non-planning impulsiveness factors increased with the grade of sleep disorders, and reached a peak at the fifth grade. The children with frequent sleep snoring showed higher scores of above three impulsiveness factors than children without sleep snoring or having rare snoring (P<0.01).Sleep disorders are associated with impulsivity in children. It is thus essential to pay close attentions to children's sleep for children with relatively high impulsiveness.
The Hubbard model is believed to capture the essential physics of cuprate superconductors. However, recent theoretical studies suggest that it fails to reproduce a robust and homogeneous superconducting ground state. Here, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and density matrix renormalization group calculations, we show that magnetic excitations in the prototypical cuprate ladder Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ are inconsistent with those of a simple Hubbard model. The magnetic response of hole carriers, contributing to an emergent branch of spin excitations, is strongly suppressed. This effect is the consequence of d-wave-like pairing, enhanced by nearly an order of magnitude through a large nearest-neighbor attractive interaction. The similarity between cuprate ladders and the two-dimensional compounds suggests that such an enhanced hole pairing may be a universal feature of superconducting cuprates.
