Kurzfassung Nachdem sich der Umweltschutz in Unternehmen in der Vergangenheit überwiegend auf die Umweltverträglichkeit der betrieblichen Prozesse konzentriert hat, erweitern nun immer mehr produktbezogene Fragestellungen das Aufgabenfeld des Umweltmanagers. Zwar hat eine Vielzahl von Unternehmen schon in den 1970er Jahren mit der lebenszyklusweiten Betrachtung von Produkten begonnen. Dass diese Sichtweise jedoch derzeit noch stärker an Bedeutung gewonnen hat, ist vor allem auf die jüngste europäische und internationale Umweltgesetzgebung zurückzuführen, die sich verstärkt auf den kompletten Lebensweg eines Produkts bezieht und die Hersteller auch für die Nutzung und Entsorgung ihrer Produkte in die Verantwortung nimmt. Dieser Herausforderung sah sich auch die Alfred Kärcher GmbH & Co. KG gegenüber und hat im Rahmen eines Kooperationsprojekts mit der TU Darmstadt einen weiteren Schritt unternommen, die unternehmenseigenen Prozessabläufe auf die neuen Anforderungen anzupassen.

The Use of Concept Mapping to Support Collaborative Advanced Design Projects

Guidelines for a Decision Support Method Adapted to NPD Processes (2007)

This paper describes the collaboration efforts of three departments of the faculty of mechanical engineering at Technische Universitat Darmstadt (TUD), aimed at providing students of engineering design (ED) and industrial design (ID) with a common platform to work on. To this end, ED and ID students were provided with an opportunity to jointly practice collaborative advanced design projects, while acting as test subjects for the application of a networked, easy-to-learn, accessible software tool for knowledge modelling and data exchange. Projects were closely monitored to provide some insight into how the software-based, interdisciplinary collaboration works. The aim was to determine, whether the visualization and modelling of the interconnected nature of the design process and product features increases process awareness in the participants. Thereby, a contribution to process improvement for industrial product design was intended.

Implications of new institutional economy theory for PSS design

At the institute of product development a machine elements (pmd) of Technische Universitat Darmstadt, Product Service Systems are researched as objects of design. In particular, the application of principles and methods of systematic engineering design to PSS design is examined. The aim is to contribute to effective PSS design by generating and evaluating design variants on different levels of concretization. This paper focuses on, the interactions between customer and provider in a Business-to-Consumer scenario. An earlier idea of segmenting PSS into episodes of customer/provider interaction is expanded and an approach for applying selected methods of new institutional economics to the evaluation of design variants is presented. Transaction cost and property rights distribution are proposed as evaluation criteria and suggestions for reducing the consequences of asymmetric information are given. As an example, various alternatives for a PSS “laundry / cleaning clothes” are considered and the results are presented.

Die Arbeiten im Rahmen dieses Projekts erfolgten in Kooperation mit der Alfred Kärcher GmbH & Co. KG, einem weltweit agierenden Unternehmen mit über 6.500 Mitarbeitern und einem Jahresbetrag von 1,25 Mrd. €. Als Hersteller von Reinigungsgeräten für Geschäfts- und Privatkunden verfügt Kärcher über ein umfangreiches Produktportfolio, angefangen vom Staubsauger bis hin zur stationären Reinigungsanlage für Nutzfahrzeuge (Abbildung 24).

Research Tasks and Potentials In Product-Service-System Development

Product Service Systems (PSS) research is a growing discipline combining engineering design with economics. PSS widens the scope of traditional product development to encompass the whole range of possible interactions between producer and customer as part of a diffuse design space. In this paper, the authors aim to illustrate research tasks and potentials. A model framework is presented, which might aid the dissemination of PSS concepts. A transfer of implementation know-how and experience from the field of EcoDesign towards PSS is proposed. One of the problems of EcoDesign in the past has been the emphasis on theoretical findings, neglecting considerations of practical application. The presented approach constitutes the basis for future research work at TU Darmstadt. It serves as a frame of reference for a systematic treatment of PSS, their environmental properties and implementation related issues.

Products and services have long been combined into integrated offers, referred to as Product Service Systems. The question of how best to design PSS in an integrated process is currently under discussion. The material in this paper is the outcome of a joint project in which the prerequisites for PSS development at a manufacturer of office furniture were explored. The objective is to identify a common denominator in products and services suitable for design purposes and discuss its applicability in the design process of a company. Models of the product life cycle and customer activities are combined and similarities are determined. This conceptual view of the design elements in PSS is compared to findings of the industrial case study.

Application of Process Computers in Automatic Control

The process computer has become firmly established in industrial automatic control. It is used on an increasing scale for direct open-loop and closed-loop control. This opens up new possibilities for applying knowledge gained by the theoretical approach to problems of process automation. Remarkable results have already been achieved, but it has also been realized that automation has its practical limits, which are mainly due to the very nature of the processes themselves. Aspects of economy, reliable operation and easy handling are becoming more and more important for the efficient use of automatic control systems.

Implementation of Design for Environment Principles and Methods in a Company -Practical Recommendations

This paper presents findings from a transfer project aiming to implement methods and tools of Design for Environment (DfE) in the business practice of Alfred Karcher GmbH, a manufacturer of cleaning equipment. During the course of the project, different approaches and methods have been tested. The spectrum ranges from easy-to-use tools like checklists to complex methods, two of which are compared in this paper in order to illustrate the properties, which decide on the implementation success in this case. These two are the UTeMa-matrix, developed specially for use in the Karcher design process and a variant of the Eco-QFD, which has been adapted to the boundary conditions posed by the existing Karcher QFD. Both methods are intended to gather environmental requirements to products and insert them into the development process. The results of the comparison are interpreted and general recommendations are given.
