A harmonic deviations linear prediction vocoder for improved narrowband speech transmission

This paper presents the development, study, and experimental results of a narrowband speech coder called Harmonic Deviations (HDV) Vocoder. The HDV coder is based on the LPC vocoder, and it transmits additional information over and above the data transmitted by the LPC vocoder, in the form of deviations between the speech spectrum and the LPC all-pole model spectrum at a selected set of frequencies. At the receiver, the spectral deviations are used to generate the excitation signal for the all-pole synthesis filter. The paper describes and compares several methods for extracting the spectral deviations from the speech signal and for encoding them. To limit the bit-rate of the HDV coder to 2.4 kb/s the paper discusses several methods including orthogonal transformation and minimum-mean-square-error scalar quantization of log area ratios, two-stage vector-scalar quantization, and variable frame rate transmission. The paper also presents the results of speech-quality optimization of the HDV coder at 2.4 kb/s. Both noisefree and noisy channel applications are considered. The resulting HDV coders yield noticeable improvement in speech quality over LPC vocoders.

A variable-rate CELP coder for fast remote voicemail retrieval using a notebook computer

Remote retrieval of compressed voicemail data over a telephone line is one of several emerging applications of speech coding. Using a notebook computer equipped with a modem, a user can remotely access a networked desktop unit located at their office or home to retrieve various types of information such as email, FAX, electronic documents as well as voicemail. By compressing the speech data, we reduce the amount of time needed for the transfer of voice data over the telephone line. We have developed a high-quality variable-rate CELP (code-excited linear prediction) coder which can be used in such an application. The coder operates at an average rate of 3 kb/s assuming 80% speech activity and uses several new techniques including a mode decision mechanism based on the use of a peakiness measure and a novel excitation search method called gain-matched analysis-by-synthesis. The coder gives quality comparable to the Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio Codec at 13 kb/s.

Store attribute(s) preference of customers towards organised food and grocery retail outlets - a gap analysis

Organised food and grocery retail consumers in India in the recent days are more vocal on the quality of the products/services they buy from the market. For them, the physical environments of retail stores such as lighting, air-conditioning, store layout, parking facility, shelf display, aisle placement etc., contributes more towards the store's personality or image. The current study focuses on the consumer preference of store image attributes in organised food and grocery super markets in Coimbatore, a tier-II city in Tamil Nadu, India. The study aims to measure the existing gap between the expectation of customers and the perception of the retailers towards the retail store attributes in Coimbatore city, using 'independent samples t' test. The findings of the analysis sends sound signals from the customers to the organised food and grocery retailers, about the major store image attributes on which they have to concentrate to attract more customers to their organised food and grocery store.

Information technology has been used in various forms in today’s education. A course Management system takes an important role in the enterprise of teaching and learning systems. This paper describes the assessment of some e-Learning Tools using FBAA (Feature Based Assessment Algorithm). Hands-free voice communication in an automobile with a microphone array

The authors present the result of their research on developing a hands-free voice communication system with a microphone array for use in an automobile environment. The goal of this research is to develop a speech acquisition and enhancement system so that a speech recognizer can reliably be used inside a noise automobile environment, for digital cellular phone application. Speech data have been collected using a microphone array and a digital audio tape (DAT) recorder inside a real car for several idling and driving conditions, and processed using delay-and-sum and adaptive beamforming algorithms. Performance criteria including signal-to-noise ratio and speech recognition error rate have been evaluated for the processed data. Detailed performance results presented show that the microphone array is superior to a single microphone.< >
