Studies on Surfactant Adsorption at the Cellulose-Water Interface

The adsorption of anionic - sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (NaDBS), cationic – cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and nonionic - Triton X-100 (TX-100) surfactants under different conditions on cellulose-water interface are investigated and the adsorption results are compared with detergency of particulate and composite soil. The kinetics of adsorption of different surfactants on cellulose-water interface show that a cationic surfactant adsorbs rapidly and nonionic and anionic surfactants adsorb relatively slowly. The equilibrium time for cationic surfactant is less (~ 10 min) but higher for the anionic and nonionic surfactants (~ 1 hr). The cellulosic surface is shown to have dual sites of hydrophobic and hydrophilic in nature. It is shown that anionic and nonionic surfactant molecules mostly adsorb on the hydrophobic site, while cationic surfactant molecules mostly adsorb on the hydrophilic site. Mixed Phytochemicals Mediated Synthesis of Multifunctional Ag–Au–Pd Nanoparticles for Glucose Oxidation and Antimicrobial Applications

The growing awareness toward the environment is increasing commercial demand for nanoparticles by green route syntheses. In this study, alloy-like Ag-Au-Pd trimetallic nanoparticles have been prepared by two plants extracts Aegle marmelos leaf (LE) and Syzygium aromaticum bud extracts (CE). Compositionally different Ag-Au-Pd nanoparticles with an atomic ratio of 5.26:2.16:1.0 (by LE) and 11.36:13.14:1.0 (by LE + CE) of Ag:Au:Pd were easily synthesized within 10 min at ambient conditions by changing the composition of phytochemicals. The average diameters of the nanoparticles by LE and LE + CE are ∼8 and ∼11 nm. The catalytic activity of the trimetallic nanoparticles was studied, and they were found to be efficient catalysts for the glucose oxidation process. The prepared nanoparticles also exhibited efficient antibacterial activity against a model Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. The catalytic and antimicrobial properties of these readymade trimetallic nanoparticles have high possibility to be utilized in diverse fields of applications such as health care to environmental.

Solubilization of Naphthalene by Pure and Mixed Surfactants

Surfactant-enhanced remediation technology has shown promising potential for removing residual organics from contaminated soils and groundwater. Using a homologous series of cationic surfactants, alkylpyridinium bromide, it was found that the molar solubilization ratio (MSR) for naphthalene decreases with decreasing carbon number in the hydrophobic tail. In contrast, with nonylphenyl ethoxylates (nonionic surfactants), the MSR for naphthalene does not show appreciable changes with varying number of ethylene oxide groups in the hydrophilic head. MSR values for naphthalene in the presence of ionic surfactants with similar tail length depend on the charge of the headgroup. In addition, the behavior of naphthalene solubilization using cationic−nonionic and anionic−nonionic surfactant mixtures deviates considerably from that of ideal mixing. More interestingly, however, results from batch and column experiments reveal that the interactions between surfactant molecules and sand surfaces, particularly surfactant adsorption, play a critical role in determining the organics removal efficiency from sand matrixes.

Carbon-Doped Mesoporous Anatase TiO₂ Multi-Tubes Nanostructures for Highly Improved Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity

Development of a high surface area and efficient visible light induced photocatalyst on a large scale is a promising task from the practical perspective. In this study, visible light active C-doped anatase TiO2 multi-tubes were synthesized using banana (Musa acuminata) stem fiber as a sacrificial template, removed by calcination at 450 °C. During the calcination process, the lattice of anatase TiO2 phase was doped with C, and obtained multi-tubes showed high surface area (∼99 m2/g) with a mesoporous structure made of ∼15 ± 3 nm nanoparticles. The synthesized TiO2 multi-tubes showed an enhanced light absorption property in the whole visible light region and good thermal stability of the anatase phase up to 750 °C. The synthesized C-doped TiO2 multi-tubes manifest an excellent photocatalytic activity for the reduction of Cr (VI) to Cr(III) under the visible light exposure. This process may have lots of practical importance as the method of synthesis of the catalyst is novel and the multi-tubes structure can be synthesized on a large scale through a quick and economical way with excellent photocatalytic activity. This novel multi-tubes structure may also be useful for photovoltaics, antimicrobial, and Li-batteries applications in the future.

Visible light-induced Ag nanoparticle deposited urchin-like structures for enhanced SERS application

A simple and new fabrication method of Ag nanoparticle deposited "urchin-like" structures has been reported by the visible light-induced approach. The as-synthesized structures show the deposition of ∼5 nm sized Ag nanoparticles with nanogaps, which can generate highly enhanced electromagnetic fields for higher activity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Thus, these structures are important for highly sensitive Raman scattering activity.

Adsorption of Non-ionic Surfactants onto Sand and Its Importance in Naphthalene Removal

The kinetic and equilibrium adsorption studies of four NP (nonylphenyl ethoxylates) series non-ionic surfactants with different EO (ethylene oxide) groups on sand are presented here. The adsorption behavior of a NP series of surfactants is compared in batch and continuous column studies. The adsorption isotherms are found to be similar in nature in all cases, and the maximum amount adsorbed per gram of sand decreases with an increasing number of EO groups. The comparison of maximum amounts adsorbed in the batch and column shows that the amount adsorbed is the same for both cases. When two surfactants were mixed with a calculated average EO number, the mixed solution showed the same equilibrium amount adsorbed to that of the actual EO number, although transportation through the column showed different behavior. The organic removal efficiency of the surfactants from a sand column depends on the adsorption density on the sand surface and the lowering of the surface tension at the air−water interface. The order of naphthalene removal efficiency of different NP surfactants from a sand column are NP-40 < NP-15 < NP-9. The main objective of this study is to improve the knowledge of surfactant adsorption and its importance in organic removal from the sand surface for the application of soil and groundwater remediation.
