Effect of Nb and La on Precipitates, Yield Strength and Toughness of FeCrAl Alloy

FeCrAl alloy is considered a promising material for light water reactor fuel cladding due to its excellent elevated temperature oxidation resistance and radiation performance. The effects of 0.21 wt% Nb or 0.23 wt% La additions on the microstructure, second phase, yield strength and toughness of FeCrAl alloy are studied. The morphology and number fraction of inclusions in FeCrAl alloys are analyzed. The addition of 0.21 wt% Nb in FeCrAl alloy promotes the precipitation of nanoscale (Fe,Cr) 2 (Nb,Ti) Laves phase and refining grain size. The addition of La‐modified Al 2 O 3 and MgO·Al 2 O 3 inclusions to La 2 O 3 and LaS, and La 2 O 3 is favorable to promote the heterogeneous nucleation of α‐Fe. The fracture mode of the FeCrAl alloy with 0.21 wt% Nb or 0.23 wt% La transitions from dimple fracture and quasi‐cleavage fracture to dimple fracture, in comparison with Nb‐free or La‐free FeCrAl alloy. Nb and La additions improve the yield strength and toughness of FeCrAl alloy. The addition of Nb exhibits a more pronounced strengthening effect on FeCrAl alloy compared with the addition of La.

Numerical study on the influence of center gas supply device on gas-solid residence time distribution in COREX shaft furnace

The residence properties of gas-solid phases are important to the design and process optimization of a COREX shaft furnace. In this study, we investigated the gas-solid residence time distribution by using a coupled CFD-DEM model. The effects of the center gas supply device (CGD) on the average residence time, variance, and volume fraction of the gas and solid phases were analyzed. The results revealed that the average residence time, dispersed plug volume fraction, and well-mixed volume increased, while the variance and the dead volume fraction of the gas phase decreased for the shaft furnace with CGD. The average residence time and the dispersed plug volume fraction of the solid phase decreased in the shaft furnace with CGD. The dead volume fraction and well-mixed volume fraction increased with the introduction of CGD.

BP neural network prediction for Si and S contents in hot metal of COREX process based on mathematical analysis and Deng’s correlation

In COREX operation, the Si and S contents in hot metal are relatively high and easy-fluctuating, which is one of the problems affecting the practical operation. Accurate predictions of Si and S contents can provide theoretical references for stabilizing the fluctuations and decreasing the contents of Si and S in hot metal. Therefore, the present work established the prediction model of Si and S contents in hot metal in COREX based on BP neural network. The results show that the root-mean-square errors between the predicted value and actual value for Si and S are 0.098 and 0.0037, respectively. They are 0.070 and 0.0040 when the time-sequence lapse method is adopted, which turns out to be better. Therefore, the model is accurate and reliable to predict the Si and S contents in hot metal in COREX.

Carbide Precipitation during Tempering and Its Effect on the Wear Loss of a High-Carbon 8 Mass% Cr Tool Steel

In this paper, the precipitation of carbide and wear loss of high-carbon 8 mass% Cr tool steel at two tempering conditions (i.e., 773⁻803 K and 823⁻853 K) were studied by INCA Steel, EPMA-1720H, XRD, and ML-10 tester. The results show that the particles of test steels include the carbides (Cr₇C₃ and Cr23C₆) and carbides nucleated on Al₂O₃. When carbides are of the same size, the number of carbides in test steel at a tempering temperature of 773⁻803 K is greater than that at a tempering temperature of 823⁻853 K, especially when the size of carbides is less than 5 μm. Compared with the test steel tempered at 823⁻853 K, the distance between adjacent actual particles reduced by 80.6 μm and the maximum amount of reduction was 9.4% for single wear loss at the tempering temperature of 773⁻803 K. It can be concluded from thermodynamics results that Al₂O₃ inclusions began to precipitate in liquid, and the precipitation of carbides was at the solid⁻liquid region. Al₂O₃ can be used as the nucleation interface of carbide, thus promoting the formation of carbides. During the cooling of molten steel, a lower temperature can increase the difference of actual solubility product bigger than equilibrium solubility product, thus promoting the carbide formation.
