Synthesis, Characterization, and Application of a Polyoxometalates‐Based Cu^II Complex for Efficient Catalytic Oxidation and Electrochemical Detection

Abstract The development of eco‐friendly, high‐efficiency polyoxometalates (POMs) catalysts is vital for advancing catalytic oxidation and electrochemical detection in environmental protection. Herein, a POM‐based Cu II ‐containing complex with the molecular formula [H(4‐AP)] 8 [Cu 2 (H 2 O) 4 (P 2 Mo 5 O 23 ) 2 ]·8H 2 O ( 1 ) (4‐AP = 4‐aminopyridine) is synthesized using the hydrothermal method, and the crystal structure is determined by single X‐ray diffraction (SXRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD). Structurally, complex 1 exhibits a one dimension (1D) chain arrangement, composed of Cu II ions and Strandberg‐type (P 2 Mo 5 O 23 ) 6− anionic clusters. These 1D chains are further interconnected through [H(4‐AP)] + ligands, resulting in the formation of a two dimension (2D) supramolecular network. Complex 1 serves as an outstanding heterogeneous catalyst for the oxidation of methyl phenyl sulfide (MPS), demonstrating a remarkable conversion rate of 99% for MPS and a selectivity of 98% toward methyl phenyl sulfoxide (MPSO). In addition to its catalytic capabilities, complex 1 is also employed in the electrochemical detection of Fe III and Cr VI ions, with low limits of detection (LODs) at 4.92 µ m for Fe III and 7.82 µ M for Cr VI .

Fabrication and morphology development of isotactic polypropylene nanofibers from isotactic polypropylene/polylactide blends

Abstract The excellent characteristics of polymeric nanofibers with diameters less than 1 μm such as the enormous specific surface result in a dramatic increase in a variety of functional applications. In this article, polymer blends of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and polylactide (PLA) were fabricated through a twin‐screw extruder. The extrudates were prepared at various processing conditions and the iPP nanofibers were obtained by removal of the PLA matrix from the drawn samples. The influences of drawing ratio, the processing temperature, and the blend ratio of iPP/PLA on the morphology development of iPP phase were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the uniformed iPP nanofibers with averaged diameters less than 500 nm were fabricated by the suitable processing parameters. Otherwise, the processing immiscibility and rheological behavior of iPP/PLA blends were studied by means of dynamic mechanical analysis and capillary rheometer. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atomic Layer Deposition onto Thermoplastic Polymeric Nanofibrous Aerogel Templates for Tailored Surface Properties

Poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofibrous aerogel (NFA) templates were fabricated through vacuum freeze-drying from EVOH nanofibrous suspensions. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) layers were deposited onto highly porous templates to form organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. Chemical and physical measurements showed that mechanical properties were improved through ALD. In addition, the surface chemistry of ALD modified aerogels showed a fascinating cyclic change based on the number of ALD deposition cycles. A transition from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity was observed after a few cycles of ALD coating; however, additional deposition cycles changed the wettability characteristics back to hydrophilicity. This hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic variation is shown to be governed by a combination of geometrical and chemical surface properties. Furthermore, the deposited Al2O3 could substantially improve aerogels strength and reduce permanent deformation after cyclic compression. The Young's modulus of aerogels increased from 5.54 to 33.27 kPa, and the maximum stress at 80% strain went up from 31.13 to 176.11 kPa, after 100 cycles of trimethyl-aluminum (TMA)/water ALD. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results confirm that ALD can effectively improve the heat resistance characteristics of polymeric aerogel. The onset temperature and the residual mass increased with increasing numbers of ALD cycles. During pyrolysis, the nanofiber cores were decomposed, and the brittle pure Al2O3 self-supporting nanotube aerogels with the continuous hollow nanotubular network were formed. A coating of continuous thickness Al2O3 layer on individual nanofiber was achieved after 100 ALD cycles. In additional to mechanical strength and physical property changes, the ALD modified aerogel also shows a superhydrophobic and oleophilic surface chemistry, which could potentially be used to remove oils/organic solvents from water. The resultant aerogels exhibit excellent absorption capacity (31-73 g/g) for various liquids, and the material could be reused after distillation or squeezing. A successful scale-up of such materials could provide some insights into the design and development of thermoplastic polymeric NFAs with substantial industrial applications.

MoS2/C/C nanofiber with double-layer carbon coating for high cycling stability and rate capability in lithium-ion batteries

MoS2 has attracted a lot of interest in the field of lithium-ion storage as an anode material owing to its high capacity and two-dimensional (2D)-layer structure. However, its electrochemical properties, such as rate capability and cycling stability, are usually limited by its low conductivity, volume variation, and polysulfide dissolution during lithiation/delithiation cycling. Here, a designed two-layer carbon-coated MoS2/carbon nanofiber (MoS2/C/C fiber) hybrid electrode with a double-layer carbon coating was achieved by a facile hydrothermal and subsequent electrospinning method. The double carbon layer (inner amorphous carbon and outer carbon fiber) shells could efficiently increase the electron conductivity, prevent the aggregation of MoS2 flakes, and limit the volume change and polysulfide loss during long-term cycling. The as-prepared MoS2/C/C fiber electrode exhibited a high capacity of up to 1,275 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 A/g, 85.0% first cycle Coulombic efficiency, and significantly increased rate capability and cycling stability. These results demonstrate the potential applications of MoS2/C/C fiber hybrid material for energy storage and may open up a new avenue for improving electrode energy storage performance by fabricating hybrid nanofiber electrode materials with double-layer carbon coatings.

Aminated EVOH nanofiber membranes for Cr(vi) adsorption from aqueous solution

Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) nanofiber membranes were prepared by melt-blending extrusion with cellulose acetate butyrate ester (CAB) as the matrix and a high-speed flow deposition process. Then, aminated-EVOH (l-Lys/EVOH, Cy/l-Lys/EVOH and DETA/EVOH) nanofiber membranes were prepared for hexavalent chromium [Cr(vi)] removal by facile chemical modification on the surface of EVOH nanofiber membranes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were carried out to test the morphology and structure of aminated-EVOH nanofiber membranes. Adsorption experiments suggested that amination was beneficial to adsorption, and the optimal pH for prepared membranes to Cr removal was 2.0. Adsorption kinetics analysis revealed that the adsorption process was successfully fitted with a Pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich isothermal model well described the adsorption isotherm data. A thermodynamic study suggested that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Aminated-EVOH nanofiber membranes exhibited excellent reusability for Cr removal. The Cr adsorption efficiency of DETA/EVOH nanofiber membranes retained up to 98.73% of the initial adsorption after 6 successive adsorption-desorption cycles.
