Normal limits of ECG measurements related to atrial activity using a modified limb lead system

Objective: The present study was designed to derive the normal limits of a new ECG lead system aimed at enhancing the amplitude of atrial potentials through the use of bipolar chest leads.Methods: Sixty healthy male subjects, mean age 38.85±8.76 years (range 25 to 58 years) were included in this study.In addition to a standard 12-lead ECG, a modified limb lead (MLL) ECG was recorded for 60 sec with the RA electrode placed in the 3 rd right intercostal space slightly to the left of the mid-clavicular line, the LA electrode placed in the 5 th right intercostal space slightly to the right of the mid-clavicular line and the LL electrode placed in the 5 th right intercostal space on the mid-clavicular line.Results: In the frontal plane, the modification of limb electrode positions produced significant changes compared to standard limb lead I and II.The mean P wave amplitude was 111±17μV in MLL I and 64±16μV in standard limb lead (SLL) I (p<0.001).Similarly it was 118±22μV in MLL II and 100±27μV in SLL II.No statistically significant changes were seen in V 1 -V 6 due to modification of the Wilson central terminal electrode positions. Conclusion:The modification of limb electrode placement leads to changes in the amplitude of the P waves in the MLL leads I and II compared to SLL leads I and II in healthy subjects.These changes may be of importance in the detection of atrial electrical activity.

Detection of Blood Flow Obstruction through a Method in Healthy and Obsessed Subjects

Objectives: This study involves the measurement of obstructions in the blood flow of an arterial system. An attempt is made to find the correlation between the pressure and flow of the blood. Methods: The obstructed area produces vascular sounds which are acquired through disturbed blood flow patterns. The measurements are carried over by audio frequency analysis of the sound observed during arterial stenosis. These sounds can be measured using piezoelectric film sensor by placing it in the wrist and mid arm in the blood flow path. Results:The sounds that initiate in the narrowed arteries is measured by non-invasive, sensitive piezoelectric film sensor that captures the vibration caused by the flow of blood inside arteries and generate appropriate waveform for different flow conditions. Conclusion: The waveforms are analyzed in spectrum analyzer and compared with the normal flow patterns and if the values deviate from normal it is concluded for occlusion or clot that happened in the blood flow passage. Over the last decade, bacterial cellulose (BC) has been gaining a lot of attention as a platform material for diverse industrial applications. Because of its unique attributes like ultra-high purity, hydrophilicity, crystallinity, surface area, and porosity, BC could be used as biomaterials, wound dressing agents, tissue scaffolds, and vascular grafts in pharmaceutical industries. Despite its well-defined properties, its applicability and ability to compete with other high-performance biomaterials are restricted due to delimitations like lack of antibacterial properties, optical transparency, conductivity, magnetic properties, and stress-bearing capability. It is necessary to understand the current state of the art of these biomaterials and the existing challenges to facilitate their real-time implementation. Thus, the chapter highlights the existing biomedical applications of BCs, delineating their limitations. It further provides an overview of the bioprocessing strategies during the production (in situ modification) and ex situ compounding with chemical/biological active substances that enhance the physiochemical and surface properties to tailor-make these biomaterials to improvise their efficacy during biomedical application. The techno-economic issues associated with different physicochemical approaches of functionalization are also detailed. Advances and prospects to overcome the technical issues are discussed, facilitating the application of the novel biomaterials to revolutionize the biomedical market.

Modified Limb Lead (MLL) ECG system may be used during rest or exercise ECG, or atrial activity enhancement. Because of modification in the limb electrode placement, changes are likely to happen in ECG wave amplitudes and frontal plane axis, which may alter the clinical limits of normality and ECG diagnostic criteria. The present study investigated the effects of the modified limb electrode position on the electrocardiographic waveforms, ST segment amplitudes (STa) and frontal plane axis.The observational study included sixty sinus rhythm subjects of mean age 38.85±8.76 (SD) in the range 25 to 58 years. In addition to 12-lead ECG, MLL ECG was recorded with, the RA electrode placed in the 3rd right intercostal space to the right of the parasternal line, the LA electrode placed in the 5th right intercostal space to the right of the mid-clavicular line and the LL electrode placed in the 5th right intercostal space on the mid-clavicular line.The modification produced profound changes in ECG wave amplitudes and STa amplitudes in frontal plane leads. The QRS and T wave axis shifted on the average by -17o and 41o, respectively, with considerable individual variation, which altered the diagnostic criteria.The ECG amplitudes and STa changes produced by the MLL system showed that all remains within the clinical limits, except the R wave amplitude in the modified lead I. It is evident that the MLL system produced deviations in frontal plane QRS axis which altered the diagnostic interpretation.

Identification of Lung Cancer Cell using Watershed Segmentation on CT Images

The detection of lung cancer through image processing is an important tool for diagnoses. Different methods were employed to detect the cancerous cell of a lung with image pre processing such as Gabor filter, image segmentation using watershed segmentation and feature extraction by using MATLAB. In this experiment, various Computed Tomography (CT) images of lung were used as input image and obtained the output image in JPEG format. The resultant output of this technique was evaluated. Based on the results, it shows that watershed segmentation technique is showed better results than other segmentation techniques for lung cancer cell identification.
