Effects of Carbon and/or Alkaline Earth Elements on Grain Refinement and Tensile Strength of AZ31 Alloy

The effects of carbon and/or alkaline earth elements Ca and Sr on the grain refinement and tensile properties of the AZ31 alloy have been investigated in the present study. A significant grain refining efficiency could be obtained for the AZ31 alloy modified by carbon inoculation and the grain refining efficiency could be further improved by the combination of 0.2 mass%C and alkaline earth elements of 0.2 mass%Ca or 0.2 mass%Sr. Compared to the AZ31 alloy without any treatment, the tensile properties of the AZ31 alloy were remarkably improved after being modified by the combination of carbon and a little addition of alkaline earth elements. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure were improved by about 20% and 40%, respectively. After being refined either by 0.2 mass%C or by the combination of 0.2 mass%C and a little addition of alkaline earth elements (0.2 mass%Ca or 0.2 mass%Sr), the main fracture mechanism was changed from cleavage mode with large cleavage planes for the unrefined AZ31 alloy to mixed mode of cleavage and quasi-cleavage fracture. The fracture surfaces were almost composed of small cleavage planes with thin river patterns and quasi-cleavage planes with small dimples and severe plastic deformation.

Balanced Feature Fusion for Grouped 3D Pose Estimation

3D human pose estimation by grouping human body joints according to anatomical relationship is currently a popular and effective method. For grouped pose estimation, fusing features of different groups together effectively is the key step to ensure the integrity of whole body pose prediction. However, the existing methods for feature fusion between groups require a large number of network parameters, and thus are often computational expensive. In this paper, we propose a simple yet efficient feature fusion method that can improve the accuracy of pose esti- mation while require fewer parameters and less calculations. Experiments have shown that our proposed network outperforms previous state-of-the-art results on Human3.6M dataset.

Effect of Nonbonded Hydrogen on Structure and Properties of DLC Films

Abstract a-C: H films were prepared on the surface of 316 L stainless steel, aluminum foil and single crystal silicon (100) waferby PE-CVD. The effect of nonbonded hydrogen on the thermal stability and properties of the films was discussed. The analysis results show that the H elements in this a-C: H film mainly exists as free states of H molecules or H atoms. The graphitization stage of the a-C: H films prepared in this experiment are obviously divided into two stages by the precipitation of non-bonded H 564°C. At the same time, the escape of non-bonded H significantly resulted in the release of internal stress and significantly promoted the second stage graphitization. Under the action of hydrogen evolution and graphitization, the microstructure of carbon film is rearranged and agglomerated in a certain direction.

Enhancement of sp3 C Fraction in Diamond-like Carbon Coatings by Cryogenic Treatment

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings deposited onto high-speed-steel surfaces were subjected to deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) at temperatures of −120 to −196 °C to investigate the evolution of microstructure, bonding structure, and mechanical properties. The surface morphology and the bonding structure of the DLC coatings were studied using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that DCT affects the surface morphology, especially the size and the height of the aggregates. For those DLCs with more than 50% sp3 C fraction, the sp2 C → sp3 C transformation occurred in coatings treated at a temperature of −120 to −160 °C; and the maximum fraction of sp3 C was obtained after treatment at −140 °C. Almost keeping the wear resistance of DLCs, DCT can improve the adhesion strength, and surface hardness. The findings of this study indicate that DCT will be a potential post-treatment method to tune the microstructure and mechanical performance of DLC coatings.
