Nowadays, e-services technology has demonstrated a pervasive character in the modern tourism industry. E-services implemented by the tourism industry, e.g., e-tourism, appeared to produce significant cost reductions and market efficiencies. Since online services are continuously accessible, time and geographic differences do not hinder the interaction between tourism service providers and their customers anymore. By using ICTs, (small) tourism organisations can enlarge their markets or operate in niche markets by serving a specific group of customers. The increased use of ICTs has thus resulted in a significant change in the structure of the tourism industry. The present paper aims to provide an overview of experiences and findings that address the socioeconomic impacts of e-services for the (cultural) tourist industry, on the basis of a systematic impact analysis. We use a SWOT approach to organise a systematic evaluation of various e-services effects, which are specifically differentiated for e-services and e-tourism (including cultural heritage) of socioeconomic importance. The main sources to identify the strengths and weaknesses of e-services are the academic and management literature that describes the experience in practice of various stakeholders.

Rural Feet Voting of Leisure Explorers

ABSTRACT In the COVID‐19 period, spatial leisure behavior, often driven by the desire to escape urban life, reflected health and environmental concerns. This study examines how pandemic‐induced spatial motives and changes impacted disparities in leisure mobility, specifically urban‐to‐rural tourism, in Sweden. Analyzing pre‐pandemic, during pandemic, and post‐pandemic periods, using anonymized mobile phone and socioeconomic data, the paper explores urban–rural leisure mobility variations. Despite a decline in professional geographical mobility, mainly of people in affluent urban areas, due to remote work, the spatial leisure activities remained rather stable? Our findings, based on a negative binomial regression analysis, reveal also exacerbated socioeconomic segregation in recreational trips. The disruption in mobility accessibility due to COVID‐19 appears to amplify existing socioeconomic disparities, notably in urban‐to‐rural leisure travel. Our research sheds new light on the widening gap in geographical leisure activities, emphasizing the need for equitable access to nonurban destinations.

An Analysis of Resilience in Complex Socioeconomic Systems

The notion of resilience originated in the ecology literature in the modern or post-World War II era. Even so, this term has now found widespread use in the social sciences in general and in regional science in particular. Although this expansion in the use of resilience is welcome, it isimportant to recognize that there is some ambiguity and confusion in the extant regional scienceliterature about foundational issues and hence also about the nature of policy when resilience is afactor to contend with. Given this state of affairs, in this chapter, we provide a detailed discussionof three foundational and two policy related issues concerning the use of resilience in regionalscience. The three foundational issues are about definitions, whether resilience is a process, andwhether resilience is always a good thing. The two policy issues concern multiple stable states andthe connection between the twin notions of resilience and sustainability. The chapter concludeswith some retrospective and prospective remarks.

Institutional Quality in Green and Digital Transition of EU Regions – A Recovery and Resilience Analysis

Abstract This paper assesses the National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRPs) of EU member states and regions to uncover commonalities and differences between green and digital transitions, focusing on the role of institutions, among additional socio‐economic drivers, in modeling them. To that end, relevant indicators have been assembled, and several econometric models have been developed and tested to evaluate institutional performance in relation to green and digital transformations. The study reveals discrepancies in the two explored transition fields and highlights the power of institutional factors in boosting them. Specifically, the findings demonstrate that the green transition in EU regions is positively associated with variables such as life expectancy, institutional quality, tertiary education attainment, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with innovative activities, while the fruits of digitalization are mainly allied to population with higher studies, core creative class employment, accountability of institutions, and innovative SMEs. These insights offer valuable guidance for decision‐makers to draw lessons from high‐performing or successful regions and strategically assign resources. This includes paying attention to regional financial allocations and their alignment with territorial planning and long‐term policies.
