Effect of Geometry on Flexural Wave Propagation in a Notched Bar

The propagation of flexural elastic waves in notched metal bars with a rectangular cross section with the depth of notches increasing by a power law has been studied by numerical modeling and experimental laser scanning vibrometry. Three types of notch arrangement have been considered: uniform and more frequent and sparse towards the end of a bar. Such structures exhibit the characteristics of an acoustic black hole. For all the studied samples, in the 10–100 kHz frequency range, an increase in amplitude and decrease in length of the flexural wave have been experimentally found as a wave approaches the end of a bar. It has been shown that there is a critical frequency, above which the modes exhibit a section with highly reduced amplitude of oscillations.

Mathematical model of a non-stationary process of accumulation of gas hydrates, confined to deep-water mud volcanoes

<p>Large amounts of methane hydrate locked up within marine sediments are associated to mud volcanoes. We have investigated by means of mathematical modeling the unsteady process of accumulation of gas hydrates associated with the processes of mud volcanism. A mathematical model has been developed. The system of equations of the model describes the interrelated processes of filtration of gas-saturated fluid, thermal regime and pressure, and accumulation of gas hydrates in the seabed in the zone of thermobaric stability of gas hydrates. The numerical simulation of the accumulation of gas hydrates in the seabed in the deep structures of underwater mud volcanoes has been carried out using the realistic physical parameters values. The influence of the depth of the feeding reservoir and the pressure in it on the evolution of gas hydrate accumulations associated with deep-sea mud volcanoes is quantitatively analyzed. Modeling quantitatively showed that the hydrate saturation in the zones of underwater mud volcanoes is variable and its evolution depends on the geophysical properties of the bottom environment (temperature gradient, porosity, permeability, physical properties of sediments) and the depth of the mud reservoir and pressure in it. The volume of accumulated gas hydrates depends on the duration of the non-stationary process of accumulation between eruptions of a mud volcano. The rate of hydrate accumulation is tens and hundreds times the rate of hydrate accumulation in sedimentary basins of passive continental margins.</p>

Wavelet Analysis for Evaluating the Length of Precast Spliced Piles Using Low Strain Integrity Testing

The difficulties with the application of low strain integrity testing for evaluating the length of driven precast piles of two sections justify the need for new data acquisition and analysis techniques. The standard time domain analysis of the recorded signals may not allow for distinguishing the desired responses from a pile toe and a splice. In this paper, we propose the use of a set of hammers of different weights and tip materials that will provide various sensitivities of the test to a pile splice. To further analyze the collected data, we study the distributions of phase angles obtained using complex continuous wavelet transform. The characteristic phase shifts that distribute from higher to lower frequencies can be interpreted as responses from a pile toe and a splice. To verify the proposed approaches, a series of numerical simulations were performed using the finite element method for the driven pile models with the different properties of a splice zone. Numerical simulation results show that the pile splices are clearly identified when using the shorter input pulses which can be generated by light hammers with a hard head material. The total length of a simulated pile with a 1 mm air gap between sections was undetectable by standard data analysis approaches and was evaluated when analyzing the wavelet phase angle distributions. Numerically validated data acquisition and analysis techniques were applied to field data analysis and allowed us to confidently identify the length of two-section piles grouped with a pile cap.
