456-mW graphene Q-switched Yb:yttria waveguide laser by evanescent-field interaction

In this Letter, we present a passively Q-switched Yb:Y2O3 waveguide laser using evanescent-field interaction with an atmospheric-pressure-chemical-vapor-deposited graphene saturable absorber. The waveguide, pumped by a broad area diode laser, produced an average output power of 456 mW at an absorbed power of 4.1 W. The corresponding pulse energy and peak power were 330 nJ and 2 W, respectively. No graphene damage was observed, demonstrating the suitability of top-deposited graphene for high-power operation.

Generation of fiber-based plasmonic Airy beam

Compact all-fiber plasmonic Airy-like beam generator is demonstrated. A single slit and a 1D groove array were fabricated by focused ion beam (FIB) milling on the end facet of a single mode optical fiber. The single slit excites the surface plasmonic polaritons (SPPs), which are decoupled into free space by the groove array. The phase of decoupling SPPs is adjusted by the grooves position. Experimental generation of the single Airy-like beam has good consistency with theoretical predictions. The transverse acceleration and nondiffraction properties are observed. The presented plasmonic Airy-like beam generator is of importance to realize all-fiber optical trapping, beam shaping, and fiber integrated devices.

Ytterbium-doped-garnet crystal waveguide lasers grown by pulsed laser deposition

The growth of a range of crystal garnets by pulsed laser deposition is presented.As a result of optimization of the fabrication process, films can now be grown with optical quality approaching that of bulk material.To demonstrate this, we present laser performance from a Yb:YAG film with 70% slope efficiency and >16 W of output power.In addition, we present the first pulsed laser deposition of laser quality Yb:GGG and Yb:YGG.Watt-level laser performance is achieved for these two gallium garnets and routes to further performance improvements and potential applications of these films are discussed.

Trace Doping of Pb(OH)₂ Species on PdPb Alloys Boost Highly Active and Stable Ethanol Oxidation

PdPb nanocrystals have drawn considerable attention due to their excellent catalytic properties, while their practical applications have been impeded by the severe degradation of activity, which is caused by the adsorption of intermediates (especially CO) during the operation. Herein, we first present porous PdPb alloys with the incorporation of amorphous Pb(OH)2 species as highly active and stable electrocatalysts. Alloying Pd with Pb species is initially proposed to optimize the Pd-Pd interatomic distance and adjust the d-band center of Pd. Importantly, the amorphous Pb(OH)2 species are beneficial to promoting the formation of OHad and the removal of COad. Therefore, PdPb-Pb(OH)2 catalysts show a mass activity of 3.18 A mgPd-1 and keep excellent stability for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). In addition, further CO stripping and a series of CO poisoning experiments indicate that PdPb-Pb(OH)2 composites possess much better CO tolerance benefiting from the tuned electronic structure of Pd and surface incorporation of Pb(OH)2 species.

[The effect of antioxidants on the in vitro life-span of keratinocyte].

The effect of antioxidants on the in vitro life span of mouse keratinocytes was investigated in this work. It was found that the life span of the keratinocytes cultured in the medium supplemented with antioxidants was extended significantly. The most beneficial antioxidant used in this work was the mercaptoethanol, followed by the catalase and SOD. However, the growth rates of keratinocytes in vitro under all the experimental conditions still declined with the culture time. It was also found that the antioxidants added in the medium were also helpful to enhance the keratinocyte colony formation. In addition, the aging kinetics of the mouse epidermal keratinocytes in vitro were analyzed, and finally the aging rate constants corresponding to antioxidants used were calculated.

We report the linear and nonlinear characterization of low loss Yb:Ta2O5 rib waveguides fabricated by using CMOS compatible processes on a SOI substrate. We report a nonlinear refractive index of 6.65×10−18 m2/W measured at telecom wavelengths.

High second-order non-linearities in poled silica fibres

Comparative study of rare-earth doped sesquioxides grown by pulsed laser deposition and their performance as planar waveguide lasers

The sesquioxides yttria, scandia and lutetia have been identified as promising host materials for high power lasers due to their excellent thermal properties, their ability to incorporate RE-ions and their resulting spectroscopic properties [1]. However, the melting points of these materials exceed 2400°C and are therefore problematic to grow from the melt. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is an alternative method of growing thin crystalline films of these materials, avoiding the requirement for such high temperature growth.

Reconfigurable optical waveguide multi-analyte system for river water pollution monitoring

Research on fluorescence-based integrated optical immunoassay multisensing systems has gained growing interest in the last ten years because these sensors offer high sensitivity and good specificity, can simultaneously detect multiple analytes in a single measurement and are fast, robust and cost-effective [1-5]. Therefore they have the potential to replace conventional chromatographic techniques as the monitoring systems for the rapid assessment of pollution in water. These highly multiplexed analytical systems are also in demand in other fields such as clinical diagnostics and forensic science. This research work presents advances in multi-analyte integrated optical fluorescence-based sensors, their integration into a novel, reconfigurable, multi-bio-sensing system and their use in detecting organic pollutants in river water.
