Threat to Ambient Air Quality Due to Poor Municipal Solid Waste Management: A Case Study in and around Vuasuni Dumping Site, Bhubaneswar, Odisha , India.

The objective of this study is to assess the state of air quality near municipal solid waste dumping site of the smart city Bhubaneswar, Odisha,India. Air Quality Index (AQI) in the study area has been calculated by measuring parameters like particulate matter (PM 10 , PM 2.5 ), sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and carbonmonoxide (CO). Air status from AQI study depicts moderately pollution at dumping site (AQI=51.9). Corelation study shows a strongly direct relation among AQI and PM 10 (r=0.964). Regression study reflects PM 10 is good at predicting AQI (R 2 =0.93065, p<0.0001). Multiple linear regression (MLR) study predicts AQI with very less error(rss=0.0003) where PM 10 , PM 2.5 , SO 2 , NOx and CO are independent variables. This study also identifies potential sources of pollution and the extent of air pollution. In addition, management strategies have been proposed to minimize the effects of pollutants. Assessment of Impact of Iron Ore Mining Impact by Using Remote Sensing: a Case Study from Keonjhar District of Odisha, India

The environmental impacts of open cast mining are many and diverse. Mining causes massive damage to landscape and biological communities. The forests are the greatest victims of these activities, which can be gauged from the depletion of the forests in various mine belts. The monitoring of impact of mining in remote locations is problematic due to difficulties of access. As per the guidelines of ministry of Environment&Forest, Govt. of India, it is mandatory to study and analyze the impacts of mining on its surroundings environment. Periodic monitoring of environmental impacts is essential to characterize land-use and land-cover changes over time. Remote sensing technology can be effectively used as a valuable asset in completing environmental assessments at mining affected areas to generate reliable information on land use changes. The present study was undertaken to analyze the process of human-induced landscape transformation in the iron mined affected areas of Odisha, India by interpreting temporal remote sensing data&using Geographic Information System. The results find out significant changes in certain land use category such as settlement, agricultural land, waste land&forest area. This study concludes that land scape changes is an important issue at open cast mining which needs to be timely addressed. The study also highlights the utility of this method to monitor elements of the impact of large-scale mining and other extensive forms of resource exploitation such as deforestation in developing countries. This paper also finds out that remote sensing and GIS techniques can be effectively used for identification of various sequential changes in land use patterns at remotely access area of mining areas.

Human population and activities in the world are generally concentrated near the coast, which has modified the environment for thousands of years.Coastal development leads to modification of foreshore and loss of key habitats such as mangroves, coral, sea grasses etc.Because of this collision of impacts and uses, managing coastal zone can be a high priority for all the coastal nations.Coastal zones are more vulnerable for land use pattern change in the rapid era of urbanization and industrialization.To protect the current natural resources and to know about the causes and consequences of more utilization of water and soil resources a land use land cover (LULC) monitoring and mapping was carried out in the Gulf of Kachchh, the most hastily growing industrial hub of India.Geospatial techniques were used to monitor and evaluate the change in LULC in the Gulf of Kachchh from 1997 to 2016.LISS-III satellite images and digital change detection methods were used.The satellite images were classified using supervised classification method and expert visual interpretation.KAPPA analysis and Error matrix have been done for the accuracy assessment.Change detection among the satellite images for all the nine LULC classes was calculated.The overall classification accuracy of the image is 91.46% with Kappa statistics of 0.89.This study shows that the major LULC change identified in agricultural land

Evaluation of Water Quality of Local Streams at Gandhamardan Iron Mines, Suakati, Keonjhar District of Odisha, India

The present study focused on assessing the water quality by using water quality index (WQI) of six streams located surrounding iron ore mine of Suakati area of Keonjhar District of Odisha, which includes the physicochemical analysis of fourteen parameters: pH, colour, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolve oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total hardness (TH), chloride (Cl-), nitrate (NO3-), oil & grease (O&G), sulphate (SO42-), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), fluoride (F-) and arsenic(As). The WQI of these streams ranges from 4.47 to 244 indicating bad water quality of few streams. The high value of WQI has been found to be mainly from the higher values of TDS, TH, NO3-, O&G, Mn, SO42-, As, Fe and F- in different stream water. Correlation analysis shows a strongest value of positive Correlation coefficient (r) exist between O&G and WQI (r=0.979) at SW1, between as and WQI (r=0.985) at SW2, between O&G and WQI (r=0.99) at SW3, between O&G and WQI (r = 0.995) at SW4, between as and WQI (r=0.948) at SW5 and between TDS and WQI (r=0.753) at SW6. The analysis reveals average WQI score for water sample from locations SW1 (126.4), SW2 (222.6), SW3 (105.2) and SW6 (156.6) are in higher sides and quality is very poor. The study shows the quality of water is fit to use in irrigation but not fit for domestic purpose. It also proofs that anthropogenic activity like mining activity is putting deleterious impact on the surrounding water bodies.

Carbon subsists as carbon dioxide and represents about 0.04% in the earth's atmosphere.It has acquired a lot of consideration as a greenhouse gas, due to it has possible impact on the climate of the world.Various anthropogenic activities has increased the carbon level in the atmosphere and interrupted the carbon cycle.However, environment has it's possess system of storing and sequestering the carbon in its "sinks'' or "reservoirs".Forest plays a unique role in carbon sequestration as well as mitigating the climate change.Assessment of forest carbon stocks depends upon the assessment of forest biomass.The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recognized total five carbon pools for the terrestrial ecosystem concerning biomass, namely the below-ground biomass, above-ground biomass, woody debris, litter and soil organic matter.The above-ground biomass comprises the major portion among the all carbon pools.The paper gives detail about the traditional methods as well as their limitations.Because of the limitations of traditional methods to measure biomass of forest, generally remote sensing has been utilized for estimation of biomass of the forest in the past decade.Geo-spatial technologies like Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides rapid assessment of above ground biomass (AGB) and terrestrial carbon stock (CS) over large areas comparatively at a low cost and in less time.This paper, aims to summarize and review the various techniques and studies that were used to estimate the forest biomass.
