Optimal Scheduling of Replacement and Rehabilitation of Water Distribution Systems

Many municipal water distribution systems across North America are reaching or have exceeded their design lives and, therefore, require extensive upgrading through rehabilitation and/or replacement. However, these needs far surpass the available resources, and decision makers must prioritize their replacement/rehabilitation needs. One such approach is the determination of the optimal replacement time based on the minimization of the total or annual average cost during a predetermined service period. This paper describes a simple approach for the optimization of replacement/rehabilitation activities for a network of buried pipes, which is based on the assumption that the occurrence of breaks in a pipeline segment follows a nonhomogeneous Poisson process. Equations for evaluating the optimal replacement time are derived by minimizing the expected annual average cost during the service period of the pipeline segment. Predictions are compared with those obtained by minimizing the expected total (accumulated) cost during the service or planning period. The use of the proposed approach is illustrated via numerical examples. Optimal replacement time predictions, based on minimization of the annual average cost, were found to be significantly longer than those obtained based on minimization of the total cost for the case—where break occurrence rate follows an exponential function.

Many analytical models have been developed for addressing the Vender selection for companies. There are a list of vendor for selecting materials. It is very difficult to select a genuine vendor. Since the selection of a vendor is influenced by several parameters which are in linguistic. Form also, therefore to quantity the linguistic variables fuzzy logic and set theory is used. The fuzzy set theory helps in vagueness of the system a fuzzy decision approach is developed where are resourcing of vendors to select suitable vendor for materials is made.

Numerical modelling of soil water plant interaction

The mathematical modelling of transient soil water flow in the presence of plant roots has been undertaken by several authors. In most of the models, the water uptake by roots is represented by a volumetric sink term, which is added to the continuity equation for soil water flow in the unsaturated zone. The sink term in the model needs detailed information about the root system such as root radius, root length, root density etc. Experimental evaluation of root system is both time consuming and costly. Therefore, to overcome this, the present paper deals with the solution of transient two dimensional axi -symmetric radial flow Richards equation where the volumetric sink term is computed by assigning known suction head at the root-soil interface as a boundary condition. The governing Richards equation is solved numerically by using an Iterative Alternating Direction Implicit explicit (IADIE) finite difference scheme.
