Plasmonic Solar Cells: From Rational Design to Mechanism Overview

Plasmonic effects have been proposed as a solution to overcome the limited light absorption in thin-film photovoltaic devices, and various types of plasmonic solar cells have been developed. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art progress on the design and fabrication of plasmonic solar cells and their enhancement mechanism. The working principle is first addressed in terms of the combined effects of plasmon decay, scattering, near-field enhancement, and plasmonic energy transfer, including direct hot electron transfer and resonant energy transfer. Then, we summarize recent developments for various types of plasmonic solar cells based on silicon, dye-sensitized, organic photovoltaic, and other types of solar cells, including quantum dot and perovskite variants. We also address several issues regarding the limitations of plasmonic nanostructures, including their electrical, chemical, and physical stability, charge recombination, narrowband absorption, and high cost. Next, we propose a few potentially useful approaches that can improve the performance of plasmonic cells, such as the inclusion of graphene plasmonics, plasmon-upconversion coupling, and coupling between fluorescence resonance energy transfer and plasmon resonance energy transfer. This review is concluded with remarks on future prospects for plasmonic solar cell use.

Enhancing Solar Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity of Mesoporous Carbon–TiO₂ Hybrid Films via Upconversion Coupling

Solar energy conversion has emerged as an attractive pathway in the decomposition of hazardous organic pollutants. Herein, tridoped β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+,Gd3+ upconversion (UC) nanorods were embedded in a carbon-doped mesostructured TiO2 hybrid film using triblock copolymer P123 acting as a mesoporous template and carbon source. The photoactivity of our novel material was reflected in the degradation of nitrobenzene, as a representative organic waste. The broad-band absorption of our rationally designed UC nanorod-embedded C-doped TiO2 in the UV to NIR range unveiled a remarkable increase in nitrobenzene degradation (83%) within 3 h compared with pristine TiO2 (50%) upon light irradiation. These results establish for the first time a synergetic bridge between the effects of a creative photon trapping TiO2 architecture, improved NIR light-harvesting efficiency upon UC nanorod incorporation, and a simultaneous decrease in the band gap energy and increased visible light absorption by C-doping of the oxide lattice. The resulting nanostructure was believed to favor efficient charge and energy transfer between the photocatalyst components and to reduce charge recombination. Our novel hybrid nanostructure and its underlined synthesis strategy reflect a promising route to improve solar energy utilization in environmental remediation and in a wide range of photocatalytic applications, e.g., water splitting, CO2 reutilization, and production of fuels.

Augmented Extraction Efficiency of a Hot D Exciton in MoS₂ via Intervalley Scattering

Prolonging hot carrier cooling, a crucial factor in optoelectronic applications, including hot carrier photovoltaics, presents a significant challenge. High-energy band-nesting excitons within parallel bands offer a promising and underexplored avenue for addressing this issue. Here, we exploit an exceptional D exciton cooling prolongation of 2 to 3 orders of magnitude compared to sub-picosecond in typical transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) owing to the complex Coulomb environment and the sequential and mismatch-valley relaxation. Simultaneously, the intervalley scattering upconversion of band-edge excitons with the slow D exciton formation in the metastable Γ valley/hill also reduces the cooling rate. One‐Step and Self‐Assembly Based Fabrication of Pt/TiO₂ Nanohybrid Photocatalysts with Programmed Nanopatterns

Hybrid Pt/TiO(2) nanostructures with diverse morphologies from nanodot, nanowire to mesoporous structures were obtained by a one-step synthesis based on block copolymer self-assembly. The structural transformation was easily tuned by controlling the relative amount of TiO(2) sol-gel precursor to poly(styrene-block-ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer (PS-b-PEO). These Pt/TiO(2) nanocomposites were utilized as photocatalysts with enhanced activity via synergistic coupling. Key parameters including the amount of TiO(2), types of morphology of photocatalysts, and the platinization of TiO(2) discussed in this study affected photocatalytic performance given that the hybrids were well-dispersed in nanopatterned configurations.

Two‐dimensional Transition metal Dichalcogenides as an Emerging Platform for Singlet Fission Solar Cells

Singlet fission, a rapid exciton doubling process via inverse Auger recombination, is recognized as one of the most practical and feasible means for overcoming the Shockley-Queisser limit. Singlet fission solar cells are generally developed by integrating photon downconversion organic semiconductors into conventional photovoltaic devices to break the maximum photovoltaic response of the host semiconductors by virtue of extra triplet excitons. In this regard, proper matching of two different semiconductors and heterointerface engineering are both crucial for highly efficient singlet fission solar cells. Therefore, the aim of this study is to review the prerequisite conditions for efficient triplet transfer at the heterointerfaces and thus highlight the robust spin and valley degrees of freedom of transition metal dichalcogenides with the ultimate goal of stimulating research into next-generation singlet fission solar cells.

Long-Term Stable Solid-State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Assembled with Solid-State Polymerized Hole-Transporting Material

The long-term stability of liquid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (liquid-DSSCs) is a primary problem for the upscaling and commercialization of this technology. The solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell (ss-DSSC) has been instigated to overcome the liquid-DSSC’s inherent production and instability issues and advancement has been made to achieve low-cost high-power conversion efficiency. The photovoltaic performance of ruthenium-based complex Z907 dye was studied in ss-DSSCs using a solid-state polymerized conductive polymer as hole-transporting material (HTM). We investigated the long-term stability of both liquid and solid-state DSSCs and the findings revealed an improved photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of ss-DSSC. This mainly depends on the transport phenomena of the HTM throughout the interface. The present results show a pavement for manufacturing highly stable and inexpensive ss-DSSC and the practical use is promising.

An Unconventional Route to High-Efficiency Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells via Embedding Graphitic Thin Films into TiO₂ Nanoparticle Photoanode

Graphitic thin films embedded with highly dispersed titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) nanoparticles were incorporated for the first time into the conventional dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), resulting in a remarkably improved cell efficiency due to its superior electron conductivity. Massively ordered arrays of TiO(2) dots embedded in carbon matrix were fabricated via UV-stabilization of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) films containing TiO(2) precursors followed by direct carbonization. For dye-sensitized TiO(2) based solar cells containing carbon/TiO(2) thin layers at both sides of pristine TiO(2) layer, an increase of 62.3% [corrected] in overall power conversion efficiency was achieved compared with neat TiO(2)-based DSSCs. Such a remarkably improved cell efficiency was ascribed to the superior electron conductivity and extended electron lifetime elucidated by cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy.

Electrodeposition of Stable Noble-Metal-Free Co-P Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen production via water splitting has been extensively explored over the past few decades, and considerable effort has been directed toward finding more reactive and cost-effective electrocatalysts by engineering their compositions, shapes, and crystal structures. In this study, we developed hierarchical cobalt phosphide (Co-P) nanosphere assemblies as non-noble metal electrocatalysts via one-step electrodeposition. The morphologies of the Co-P nanostructures and their electrocatalytic activities towards the hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) were controlled by the applied potentials during electrodeposition. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared Co-P nanostructures in this study were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Linear sweep voltammetry revealed that the Co-P grown at -0.9 V showed the best HER performance exhibiting the highest electrochemical active surface area and lowest interfacial charge transfer resistance. The Co-P electrocatalysts showed superior long-term stability to electrodeposited Pt, indicating their potential benefits.
