Karakoram glacier surge dynamics

We examine the surges of five glaciers in the Pakistan Karakoram using satellite remote sensing to investigate the dynamic nature of surges in this region and how they may be affected by climate.Surface velocity maps derived by feature-tracking quantify the surge development spatially in relation to the terminus position, and temporally with reference to seasonal weather.We find that the season of surge initiation varies, that each surge develops gradually over several years, and that maximum velocities are recorded within the lowermost 10 km of the glacier.Measured peak surge velocities are between one and two orders of magnitude greater than during quiescence.We also note that two of the glaciers are of a type not previously reported to surge.The evidence points towards recent Karakoram surges being controlled by thermal rather than hydrological conditions, coinciding with high-altitude warming from long-term precipitation and accumulation patterns.

Quantifying sediment sources, pathways, and controls on fluvial transport dynamics on James Ross Island, Antarctica

Proglacial regions are enlarging across the Antarctic Peninsula as glaciers recede in a warming climate. However, despite the increasing importance of proglacial regions as sedi ment sources within cold environments, very few studies have considered fluvial sediment dynamics in polar settings and spatio-temporal variability in sediment delivery to the oceans has yet to be unravelled. In this study, we show how air temperature, precipitation, and ground conditions combine to control sediment loads in two catchments on James Ross Island, Antarctica. We estimate that the sediment load for the Bohemian Stream and Algal Stream over the 50 day study period, the average sediment load was 1.18 ± 0.63 t km-2 d-1 and 1.73 ± 1.02 t km-2 d-1 , respectively. Both catchments show some sensitivity to changes in precipitation and air temperature, but the Algal catchment also shows some sensitivity to active layer thaw. The downstream changes in sediment provenance are controlled by underlying lithology, while differences in sediment load peaks between the two catchments appear to be primarily due to differing glacier and snowfield coverage. This identification of the controls on sediment load in this sub-polar environment provides insight into how other fluvial systems across the Antarctic Peninsula could respond as glaciers recede in a warming climate.

Progressive increase in number and volume of ice-marginal lakes on the western margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Abstract The evolution in number, area and volume of ice-marginal lakes in western Greenland is very poorly documented or understood. It is important to understand ice-marginal lake evolutions because they provide an element of meltwater retention, affect ice-margin character and behaviour, and potentially glacier dynamics. This study uses repeat satellite imagery acquired between 1987 and 2010 to reveal a net 44% (± 6.5%) increase in the number of lakes, a net 20% (± 6.5%) expansion in total lake surface area and an increase of 12% (± 3.3%) in the estimated volume of meltwater retained along a 1300 km length of the ice margin in western Greenland. Whilst ~ 12% (± 1.6%) of the ice margin holds lakes at any one time there is considerable complexity in lake evolution; many lakes have coalesced, drained partially or fully, or become detached from the ice margin. The total lake volume equates to 144% of the annual runoff combined from Gothab and Jakobshavn hydrological catchments. The rate of increase in meltwater retention between 1987 and 2010 was similar to the rate of increase in ice sheet surface runoff over the same time period. If the study region is representative of the whole Greenland Ice Sheet margin then as a first-order estimate ~ 5% of the increased runoff over the last 25 years has been intercepted en route to the oceans by the increased ice-marginal lake capacity. Interactions between these ice-marginal lakes, the western Greenland Ice Sheet and climate should be determined to provide insight into future land-terminating ice-marginal conditions, runoff retention and meltwater and sediment fluxes to the oceans.

Debris-covered glacier energy balance model for Imja–Lhotse Shar Glacier in the Everest region of Nepal

Abstract. Debris thickness plays an important role in regulating ablation rates on debris-covered glaciers as well as controlling the likely size and location of supraglacial lakes. Despite its importance, lack of knowledge about debris properties and associated energy fluxes prevents the robust inclusion of the effects of a debris layer into most glacier surface energy balance models. This study combines fieldwork with a debris-covered glacier energy balance model to estimate debris temperatures and ablation rates on Imja–Lhotse Shar Glacier located in the Everest region of Nepal. The debris properties that significantly influence the energy balance model are the thermal conductivity, albedo, and surface roughness. Fieldwork was conducted to measure thermal conductivity and a method was developed using Structure from Motion to estimate surface roughness. Debris temperatures measured during the 2014 melt season were used to calibrate and validate a debris-covered glacier energy balance model by optimizing the albedo, thermal conductivity, and surface roughness at 10 debris-covered sites. Furthermore, three methods for estimating the latent heat flux were investigated. Model calibration and validation found the three methods had similar performance; however, comparison of modeled and measured ablation rates revealed that assuming the latent heat flux is zero may overestimate ablation. Results also suggest that where debris moisture is unknown, measurements of the relative humidity or precipitation may be used to estimate wet debris periods, i.e., when the latent heat flux is non-zero. The effect of temporal resolution on the model was also assessed and results showed that both 6 h data and daily average data slightly underestimate debris temperatures and ablation rates; thus these should only be used to estimate rough ablation rates when no other data are available.
